Jeremiah 38

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,	1 MA Sefatia, figliuolo di Mattan, e Ghedalia, figliuolo di Pashur, e Iucal, figliuolo di Selemia, e Pashur, figliuolo di Malchia, udirono le parole che Geremia pronunziava a tutto il popolo, dicendo:
2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.	2 Così ha detto il Signore: Quelli che dimoreranno in questa città morranno di spada, di fame, e di pestilenza; ma chi se ne uscirà a’ Caldei viverà; e l’anima sua gli sarà per ispoglia, ed egli viverà.
3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '	3 Così ha detto il Signore: Questa città sarà per certo data in man dell’esercito del re di Babilonia, ed esso la prenderà.
4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'	4 E i principi dissero al re: Deh! facciasi morir quest’uomo; perciocchè egli rende rimesse le mani della gente di guerra, che è restata in questa città, e le mani di tutto il popolo; tenendo loro cotali ragionamenti; conciossiachè quest’uomo non procacci punto la prosperità di questo popolo, anzi il male.
5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'	5 E il re Sedechia disse: Eccolo in mano vostra; perciocchè il re non può nulla contro a voi.
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.	6 Essi adunque presero Geremia, e lo gettarono nella fossa di Malchia, figliuolo di Hammelec, ch’era nella corte della prigione; e ve lo calarono con delle funi. Or nella fossa non vi era acqua, ma del pantano; e Geremia affondò nel pantano.
7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,	7 Ma Ebed-melec Etiopo, eunuco, il quale era nella casa del re, avendo udito che avevano messo Geremia nella fossa ora, il re sedeva allora nella porta di Beniamino,
8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.	8 se ne uscì della casa del re, e parlò al re, dicendo:
9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'	9 O re, mio signore, male hanno fatto quegli uomini in tutto ciò che hanno fatto al profeta Geremia, avendolo gettato nella fossa; or assai sarebbe egli morto di fame là dove era; conciossiachè non vi sia più pane alcuno nella città.
10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'	10 E il re comandò ad Ebed-melec Etiopo, dicendo: Prendi teco di qui trenta uomini, e tira il profeta Geremia fuor della fossa, avanti ch’egli muoia.
11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .	11 Ed Ebed-melec prese quegli uomini seco, ed entrò nella casa del re, di sotto alla tesoreria, e ne tolse de’ vecchi stracci, e de’ vecchi panni logori, e li calò a Geremia con delle funi nella fossa.
12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.	12 Ed Ebed-melec Etiopo disse a Geremia: Deh! mettiti questi vecchi stracci, e panni logori, sotto le ascelle di sotto alle funi. E Geremia fece così.
13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.	13 Ed essi trassero Geremia con quelle funi, e lo fecero salir fuor della fossa. E Geremia dimorò nella corte della prigione
14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'	14 Poi il re Sedechia mando a far venire a sè il profeta Geremia all’entrata principale della Casa del Signore. E il re disse a Geremia: Io ti domando una cosa, non celarmi nulla.
15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'	15 E Geremia disse a Sedechia: Quando io te l’avrò dichiarata, non mi farai tu pur morire? se altresì io ti do alcun consiglio, tu non mi ascolterai.
16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'	16 E il re Sedechia giurò in segreto a Geremia, dicendo: Come il Signore, che ci ha fatta quest’anima, vive, io non ti farò morire, e non ti darò in man di questi uomini, che cercano l’anima tua.
17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.	17 Allora Geremia disse a Sedechia: Così ha detto il Signore, l’Iddio degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Se pur tu esci fuori a’ capitani del re di Babilonia, l’anima tua viverà, e questa città non sarà arsa col fuoco; e viverai, tu, e la casa tua.
18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '	18 Ma, se tu non esci a’ capitani del re di Babilonia, questa città sarà data in man de’ Caldei, che l’arderanno col fuoco, e tu non iscamperai dalle lor mani.
19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'	19 E il re Sedechia disse a Geremia: Io sono in gran perplessità per que’ Giudei, che si son rivolti a parte de’ Caldei, che io non sia dato in man loro, e che non mi scherniscano.
20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.	20 E Geremia disse: Tu non vi sarai dato. Deh! ascolta la voce del Signore, in ciò che io ti dico; ed egli ti sarà bene, e l’anima tua viverà.
21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:	21 Ma, se tu ricusi d’uscire, quest’è quello, che il Signore mi ha fatto vedere:
22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"	22 Ecco, tutte le donne ch’eran rimaste nella casa del re di Giuda, erano tratte fuori a’ capitani del re di Babilonia; ed esse dicevano: I tuoi confidenti ti han persuaso e vinto; i tuoi piedi sono stati fitti nel fango, ed essi si son tratti addietro.
23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'	23 Così saranno menate tutte le tue mogli, e i tuoi figliuoli, a’ Caldei; e tu stesso non iscamperai dalle lor mani; anzi sarai preso, e dato in mano del re di Babilonia; e farai, che questa casa sarà arsa col fuoco.
24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.	24 E Sedechia disse a Geremia: Niuno sappia di queste parole, e tu non morrai.
25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"	25 E se pure i principi, avendo udito che io ho parlato teco, vengono a te, e ti dicono: Deh! dichiaraci quel che tu hai detto al re, non celarcelo, e noi non ti faremo morire; e che ti ha detto il re?
26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '	26 Di’ loro: Io ho supplicato umilmente al re, che non mi facesse ritornar nella casa di Gionatan, per morir quivi.
27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.	27 Tutti i principi adunque vennero a Geremia, e lo domandarono; ed egli rispose loro secondo tutte le parole che il re gli aveva comandate. Ed essi lo lasciarono in pace; perciocchè la cosa non fu divolgata.
28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.	28 E Geremia dimorò nella corte della prigione, infino al giorno che Gerusalemme fu presa; ed egli vi era allora che Gerusalemme fu presa
