Jeremiah 38

1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,	1 A Saphatia figliuolo di Madian, e Gedelia figliuolo di Phassur, e Juchal figliuolo di Selemia, e Phassur figliuolo di Melchia aveano udito le parole di Geremia, che diceva a tutto il popolo:
2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.	2 Queste cose dice il Signore: Chiunque resterà in questa città perirà di spada, di fame, e di peste: ma chi fuggirà ai Caldei viverà, e provederà alla sua salute.
3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '	3 Queste cose dice il Signore: questa città sarà data assolutamente in potere dell'esercito del re di Babilonia, ed ei la espugnerà.
4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'	4 E disser que' principi al re: Di grazia sia messo a morte quest'uomo: imperocché egli apposta fa cader le braccia agli uomini di valore, che son rimasi in questa città, e al popol tutto, dicendo loro queste parole: perocché quest'uomo non cerca il bene di questo popolo, ma il male.
5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'	5 E il re Sedecia disse: Egli è già nelle vostre mani; perchè none giusto, che alcuna cosa a voi nieghi il re.
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.	6 Presero adunque Geremia, e lo misero nella cisterna di Melchia figliuolo di Amelech, che era nel vestibolo della prigione, e colle funi calarono Geremia nella fossa, dove non era acqua, ma fango. Entrò adunque Geremia nel fango.
7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,	7 Or Abdemelech eunuco Etiope, che stava nella casa del re, sentì dire come aveano gettato Geremia nella fossa. Si stava allora il re a sedere alla porta di Beniamin.
8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.	8 E Abdemelech si partì dalla casa del re, e andò a parlare al re, dicendo:
9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'	9 O re mio signore, hanno fatto male costoro in tutto quello, che hanno attentato contro Geremia profeta, avendolo messo nella fossa, affinchè vi muoia di fame, mentre non v'ha più pane nella città.
10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'	10 Diede adunque quest'ordine il re ad Abdemelech Etiope, dicendo: Prendi qui teco trenta uomini, e leva Geremia dalla fossa prima, che egli si muoia.
11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .	11 E Abdemelech presi seco gli uomini, entrò nella casa del re in un luogo sotto la guardaroba, e ne trasse fuora de' vecchi panni, e robe vecchie, e mezze lacere, e le calò giù a Geremia nella fossa per mezzo di funicelle.
12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.	12 E disse Abdemelech Etiope a Geremia: Mettiti questi vecchi panni, e questi laceri stracci sotto le ascelle delle tue braccia, e sotto le funi: e Geremia fece così.
13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.	13 E trasser fuori colle funi Geremia e lo tolsero dalla fossa: ed egli rimase nel vestibolo della prigione.
14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'	14 E il re Sedecia mandò gente per far venire a se Geremia alla porta terza, che era nella casa del Signore, e il re disse a Geremia: Io ti domanderò una cosa, non ascondermi nulla.
15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'	15 E Geremia rispose a Sedecia: Se io te la dirò, non mi ucciderai tu? e se io ti darò consiglio, tu non mi ascolterai.
16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'	16 Allora il re Sedecia segretamente giurò a Geremia, dicendo: Io giuro pel Signore, che ha creata in noi quest'anima, che non ti ucciderò, e non ti darò in potere di coloro, che vogliono la tua morte.
17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.	17 E Geremia disse a Sedecia: queste cose dice il Signor degli eserciti, il Dio d'Israele: Se tu partirai, e anderai a trovare i principi del re di Babilonia, viverà l'anima tua, e questa città non sarà incendiata, e sarai salvo tu, e la tua famiglia.
18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '	18 Se poi non anderai a trovar i principi del re di Babilonia, questa città sarà data in poter de' Caldei, i quali la incendieranno, e tu non iscamperai dalle loro mani.
19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'	19 E disse il re Sedecia a Geremia: Io sono in angustia per ragione di mie' Giudei, che sono fuggiti tra Caldei: che per disgrazia io non sia dato nelle mani di questi, e mi svituperino.
20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.	20 Ma Geremia rispose: Non ti daranno in lor potere: ascolta di grazia la Parola del Signore, che io parlo a te, e ti tornerà in bene, e salverai la tua vita.
21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:	21 Che se non vorrai andare, ecco quello, che ha mostrato a me il Signore.
22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"	22 Ecco, che tutte le donne, che saran rimase nella casa del re di Giuda, saran menate ai principi del re di Babilonia, ed elle diranno: Ti hanno sedotto, e la hanno vinta per tuo danno que' tuoi amici; hanno precipitati i tuoi passi in luogo lubrico, e pien di fango, e ti hanno abbandonato.
23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'	23 E tutte le tue mogli, e i tuoi figliuoli saranno menati a' Caldei, e tu non fuggirai dalle lor mani, ma sarai fatto prigione dal re di Babilonia, e il fuoco consumerà questa città.
24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.	24 Disse pertanto Sedecia a Geremia: Nissuno sappia queste cose, e tu non morrai.
25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"	25 Che se risapranno i principi, che io ho parlato teco, e verran da te, e ti diranno: Di a noi quel, che tu hai detto al re, e di quai cose il re abbia parlato teco, non celar nulla, e noi non ti uccideremo;
26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '	26 Tu dirai loro: Io ho umiliate le mie preghiere al re, affinchè non ordinasse, ch'io fossi ricondotto alla casa di Jonathan, perch'io non vi morissi.
27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.	27 Andarono adunque i principi a interrogar Geremia, ed egli rispose loro conforme il re gli aveva ordinato, e non lo molestaron più; perocché nulla si era saputo.
28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.	28 E Geremia si stette nel vestibolo della prigione fino al giorno, in cui fu presa Gerusalemme: conciossiachè fu presa Gerusalemme.
