Jeremiah 34

1 The word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his whole army,with all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and al the peoples, were waging war on Jerusalem and alits towns,	1 Parola indirizzata dal Signore a Geremia, quando Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia, còri tutto il Suo esercito, e tutti i regni della terra che eran sotto di lui e tutte le nazioni, combattevano contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le sue città in questi termini:
2 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tel him, Yahweh saysthis: I am going to hand this city over to the power of the king of Babylon, and he wil burn it down.	2 Così parla il Signore Dio d'Israele: Va a parlare a Sedecia re di Giuda e digli: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ecco che io darò questa città in potere del re di Babilonia, ed egli la darà alle fiamme.
3 And you yourself wil not escape his clutches but wil certainly be captured and handed over to him.You will see the king of Babylon face to face and speak to him personal y. Then you wil go to Babylon.	3 Tu non sfuggirai alle sue mani, e senza dubbio sarai preso e dato in suo potere: gli occhi tuoi vedranno il re di Babilonia, parlerai con lui, bocca a bocca, ed entrerai in Babilonia.
4 Even so, listen to the word of Yahweh, Zedekiah king of Judah! This is what Yahweh says about you:You will not die by the sword;	4 Tuttavia ascolta la parola del Signore, o Sedecia, re di Giuda; riguardo a te ecco quanto dice il Signore: Tu non morrai di spada;
5 you will die in peace. And as spices were burnt for your ancestors, the kings who in times pastpreceded you, so spices wil be burnt for you and a dirge sung for you: Alas for his highness! I have spoken,Yahweh declares." '	5 ma morrai in pace, e come furon cremati i tuoi padri, i re che furono avanti di te, così cremeranno te, e sopra te faranno i lamenti « Sventura! Signore! » perchè ho parlato io — dice il Signore. —
6 The prophet Jeremiah repeated al these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,	6 E il profeta Geremia disse a Sedecia re di Giuda tutte queste cose, in Gerusalemme.
7 while the army of the king of Babylon was attacking Jerusalem and al such towns of Judah as still heldout, namely Lachish and Azekah, these being the only fortified towns of Judah remaining.	7 Allora l'esercito del re di Babilonia combatteva contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le città di Giuda che restavano, Lachis e Azeca, queste due città fortificate eran le uniche che restavano ancora delle città di Giuda.
8 The word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the peoplein Jerusalem to issue a proclamation freeing their slaves:	8 Parola indirizzata dal Signore a Geremia, dopo che il re Sedecia fece il patto con tutto il popolo in Gerusalemme e fece pubblicare
9 each man was to free his Hebrew slaves, men and women, no one was any longer to keep a brotherJudaean in slavery.	9 che ognuno rimandasse libero il suo servo ebreo e la sua serva ebrea, e non li trattassero più come servi, ma come Giudei loro fratelli.
10 Al the chief men and all the people who had entered into the covenant had agreed that everyoneshould free his slaves, men or women, and no longer keep them as slaves: they had agreed on this and setthem free.	10 Allora tutti i principi e tutto il popolo che avevan fatto il patto di rimetterò ciascuno in libertà il suo servo e la sua serva e di non tenerli più come servi, obbedirono e diedero la libertà;
11 Afterwards, however, they changed their minds, recovered the slaves, men and women, whom theyhad set free, and reduced them to slavery again.	11 ma poi, cambiando parere, ripresero per forza i loro servi e le loro serve a cui avevan data la libertà e li assoggettaron di nuovo come servi e serve.
12 The word of Yahweh came then to Jeremiah as follows,	12 E la parola del Signore fu indirizzata dal Signore a Geremia in questi termini:
13 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out ofEgypt, out of the house of slavery; it said:	13 Così parla il Signore, il Dio d'Israele: « Io feci un patto coi vostri padri nel giorno in cui li trassi dalla terra d'Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, e dissi:
14 At the end of seven years each one of you is to free his brother Hebrew who has sold himself to you:he may be your slave for six years, then you must send him away free. But your ancestors did not listen to meand would not pay attention.	14 Al termine di sette anni ciascuno metterà in libertà il suo fratello ebreo a lui venduto: egli ti servirà per sei anni, poi lo metterai in libertà. E i vostri padri non mi diedero ascolto, non piegarono il loro orecchio.
15 Now, today you repented and did what pleases me by proclaiming freedom for your neighbour; youmade a covenant before me in the Temple that bears my name.	15 Ma voi oggi vi siete convertiti ed avete fatto ciò che è retto davanti a me, pubblicando ciascuno di rimettere in libertà il suo prossimo, avete fatto questo patto davanti a me, nella casa sopra la quale è invocato il mio nome.
16 And then you changed your minds and, profaning my name, each of you has recovered his slaves,men and women, whom you had sent away free to live their own lives, and has forced them to become yourslaves again."	16 Poi invece avete mutato parere, avete contaminato il mio nome, ciascuno ha ripreso il suo servo e la sua serva che aveva lasciati in libertà e padroni di sè, e l'avete assoggettati ad essere servi e serve.
17 'So Yahweh says this: "You have disobeyed me, by failing to grant freedom to brother and neighbour.Very well, I in my turn, Yahweh declares, shal leave sword, famine and plague free to deal with you and I shalmake you an object of horror to al the kingdoms of the earth.	17 Per questo, così parla il Signore: Voi non mi siete stati a sentire per promulgare ciascuno la libertà del suo fratello, del suo amico, ed ecco io vi promulgo la libertà per la spada, per la peste, per la fame, e vi farò straziare per tutti i regni della terra.
18 As for the people who have broken my covenant, who have not observed the terms of the covenantwhich they made before me, I shall treat them like the calf that people cut in two to pass between its pieces.	18 E quelli che non sono stati al mio patto, e non han messe in pratica le parole del patto a cui assentirono davanti a me, io li tratterò come quel vitello che essi divisero in due parti e passarono in mezzo alle parti divise.
19 The chief men of Judah and Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and al the country people who havepassed between the pieces of the calf,	19 (Cosi tratterò) i principi di Giuda, i principi di Gerusalemme, gli eunuchi, i sacerdoti, e tutto il popolo del paese che son passati in mezzo alle parti divise del vitello.
20 I shal hand over to their enemies and those determined to kil them, and their corpses wil be food forthe birds of the sky and the animals of earth.	20 E li darò in mano dei loro nemici, in mano di quelli che cercano di toglier loro la vita, e i loro cadaveri saran pasto degli uccelli del cielo e delle bestie della terra.
21 As for Zedekiah king of Judah and his chief men, I shall hand them to their enemies, to thosedetermined to kil them, and to the army of the king of Babylon which has just withdrawn.	21 E Sedecia re di Giuda e i suoi principi io li darò in potere dei loro nemici, in potere di coloro che li voglion morti, in potere degli eserciti del re di Babilonia che si son ritirati da voi.
22 Listen, I shall give the order, Yahweh declares, and bring them back to this city to attack it andcapture it and burn it down. And I shal make an uninhabited waste of the towns of Judah." '	22 Ecco io dò i miei ordini — dice il Signore — e li farò ritornare a questa città, l'attaccheranno, la prenderanno, la daranno alle fiamme, e le città di Giuda le ridurrò a un deserto tale che non vi sia chi le abiti.
