Jeremiah 10

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Listen, House of Israel, to the word that Yahweh addresses to you. Yahweh says this:	1 Écoutez la parole que Yahvé prononce sur vous, maison d’Israël.
2 'Do not learn the ways of the nations or take alarm at the heavenly signs, alarmed though the nationsmay be at them.	2 Voici ce que dit Yahvé: N’apprenez pas les pratiques des païens et ne craignez pas les signes du zodiaque; ce sont les païens qui s’en inquiètent!
3 Yes, the customs of the peoples are quite futile: wood, nothing more, cut out of a forest, worked with ablade by a carver's hand,	3 Le “Dieu terrible” des païens n’est que du creux: on a coupé un arbre dans la forêt, un artisan l’a travaillé de ses mains au ciseau.
4 then embellished with silver and gold, then fastened with hammer and nails to keep it from moving.	4 On l’a embelli avec de l’argent ou de l’or, et on l’a fixé au marteau pour qu’il ne bouge pas.
5 Like scarecrows in a melon patch, they cannot talk, they have to be carried, since they cannot walk.Have no fear of them: they can do no harm -- nor any good either!'	5 10:9 C’est du bois neuf, bien sûr, de l’argent martelé importé de Tarsis, de l’or d’Ofir travaillé par un sculpteur ou un orfèvre; on l’a recouvert de pourpre violette ou de pourpre rouge, mais tout cela reste un travail d’artisan.
6 Yahweh, there is no one like you, so great you are, so great your mighty name.	6 10:5 Ce n’est guère plus qu’un épouvantail dans un champ de concombres. Ces dieux ne parlent pas; il faut les porter car ils ne marchent pas. Ne les craignez donc pas car ils ne peuvent faire ni mal ni bien.
7 Who would not revere you, King of nations? Yes, this is your due. Since of all the wise among thenations, and in al their kingdoms, there is not a single one like you.	7 10:6 Nul n’est comme toi, Yahvé: tu es grand, et grand est ton Nom si puissant!
8 Al of them are brutish and stupid: the Futile Ones' teaching is but wood,	8 10:7 Qui ne te craindrait, Roi des nations? C’est justice, car entre tous les sages des païens, entre tous leurs rois, il n’y a personne comme toi.
9 silver leaf imported from Tarshish and gold from Ophir, the work of carver or goldsmith; then dressed up in violet and purple, all the work of skil ed men.	9 10:8 Tous sont pareillement bêtes et stupides: leurs idoles ne peuvent donner qu’une sagesse de bois.
10 But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, the everlasting King. The earth quakes when he iswrathful, the nations cannot endure his fury.	10 Mais Yahvé est le Dieu véritable, il est le Dieu vivant, le roi d’éternité. Quand il se met en colère, la terre tremble et les nations ne peuvent tenir devant sa fureur.
11 'Tell them this, "The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will vanish from the earth andfrom under these heavens." '	11 C’est pourquoi vous direz ceci: “Les dieux, qui n’ont fait ni le ciel ni la terre, disparaîtront de sur la terre et de dessous les cieux.”
12 By his power he made the earth, by his wisdom set the world firm, but his discernment spread out theheavens.	12 Mais lui, par sa puissance il a fait la terre; par sa sagesse il a fondé l’univers, par son intelligence il a étendu les cieux.
13 When he thunders there is a roaring of waters in heaven; he raises clouds from the remotest parts ofthe earth, makes the lightning flash for the downpour, and brings the wind from his storehouse.	13 S’il donne de la voix, c’est un grondement d’eaux dans les cieux; il fait venir les nuages du fond de l’horizon, il envoie les éclairs pour qu’il pleuve et fait sortir le vent de ses réservoirs.
14 At this al people stand stupefied, uncomprehending, every goldsmith blushes for his idols; hiscastings are but delusion, with no breath in them.	14 Voilà donc disqualifiée la sagesse des mortels. L’orfèvre devrait avoir honte des idoles qu’il a faites: il ne produit que des faussetés, elles sont dépourvues d’esprit.
15 They are futile, a laughable production; when the time comes for them to be punished, they wilvanish.	15 Elles ne sont rien, ce sont des œuvres ridicules qui seront jugées et disparaîtront.
16 The Heritage of Jacob is not like these, for he is the maker of everything, and Israel is the tribe that ishis heritage. His name is Yahweh Sabaoth.	16 Mais le Lot de Jacob n’est pas comme elles, c’est lui qui a façonné le monde; son nom est Yahvé Sabaot, et Israël est sa propre tribu.
17 Pick up your pack from the ground, you the besieged!	17 Fais ton bagage et sors du pays, toi l’Assiégée!
18 For Yahweh says this, 'Now I shall throw out the inhabitants of the country, this time, and bringdistress on them, so that they may find me!'	18 Car voici ce que dit Yahvé: “Cette fois je vais chasser au loin les habitants du pays, je les ferai poursuivre et ils n’échapperont pas.”
19 Disaster is on me! What a wound! My injury is incurable! And I used to think, 'If this is the worst, I canbear it!'	19 “Comme je suis malheureux, je suis brisé! Comme ma plaie me fait mal! Et pourtant je disais: si ma souffrance n’était que cela.
20 But now my tent is destroyed, al my ropes are snapped, my sons have left me and are no more; noone is left to put my tent up again or to hang the side-cloths.	20 Ma tente a été dévastée, toutes mes cordes ont été arrachées, mes fils m’ont quittée, ils ont disparu; il n’y a personne pour remonter ma tente et en tendre les toiles.
21 The shepherds are the ones who have been stupid: they have not searched for Yahweh. This is whythey have not prospered and why their whole flock has been dispersed.	21 Les bergers ont été stupides; ils n’ont pas recherché Yahvé. C’est pourquoi ils ont échoué et tout leur troupeau a été dispersé.
22 Listen! A terrible noise! A mighty uproar from the land of the north to reduce the towns of Judah todesert, to a lair for jackals!	22 Voici qu’arrive une nouvelle, un grand vacarme s’entend dans le nord; les villes de Juda vont devenir un amas de ruines, un repaire pour les chacals.”
23 I know, Yahweh, no one's course is in his control, nor is it in anyone's power, as he goes his way, toguide his own steps.	23 Tu le sais, Yahvé, l’homme n’est pas maître de sa route, le marcheur n’est pas sûr de ses pas.
24 Correct me, Yahweh, but with moderation, not in your anger, or you wil reduce me to nothing.	24 Corrige-nous donc Yahvé, mais juste comme il faut, non pas avec colère, car alors tu nous réduis à rien.
25 Pour out your anger on the nations who do not acknowledge you, and on the families that do not calon your name, for they have devoured Jacob, have devoured and made an end of him and reduced his home todesolation.	25 Déverse ta fureur sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, sur les clans qui n’ont pas invoqué ton nom, car ils ont dévoré Jacob. Ils l’ont dévoré, exterminé; ils ont détruit sa demeure.
