Sirach 42

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The fol owing things you should not be ashamed of, and do not sin from fear of what others think:	1 Pero no te avergüences de lo siguiente y no peques por temor a los que pensarán de ti:
2 of the Law of the Most High or of the covenant, of a verdict that acquits the godless,	2 no te avergüences de la Ley del Altísimo y de la Alianza, ni de la sentencia que hace justicia al impío;
3 of keeping accounts with a travelling companion, of settling property on your friends,	3 de hacer las cuentas con los compañeros de vieja, ni compartir una herencia con otros;
4 of being accurate over scales and weights, of making small and large profits,	4 de usar pesas y medidas exactas, ni de obtener ganancias grandes o pequeñas;
5 of gaining from commercial transactions, of disciplining your children strictly, of lashing a wicked slavetill you draw blood.	5 de lograr beneficios en el comercio, de corregir frecuentemente a tus hijos, ni de hacer sangrar las espaldas de un mal servidor.
6 With an interfering wife, it is as wel to use your seal, and where there are many hands, lock things up.	6 Conviene poner bajo sello a una mujer infiel, y donde hay muchas manos tener las cosas bajo llave.
7 Whatever stores you issue, do it by number and weight, spendings and takings, put everything inwriting.	7 Cuenta y pesa bien lo que depositas, y lo que das y recibes, que esté todo por escrito.
8 Do not be ashamed to correct a stupid person or a fool, or an old dotard who bickers with youngpeople. Then you wil show yourself real y educated and win the approval of everyone.	8 No te avergüences de corregir el insensato y al necio, ni al anciano decrépito que rivaliza con los jóvenes. Así demostrarás que estás verdaderamente instruido y serás estimado por todo el mundo.
9 Unknown to her, a daughter keeps her father awake, the worry she gives him drives away his sleep: inher youth, in case she never marries, married, in case she should be disliked,	9 Una hija es para su padre causa secreta de insomnio, y la preocupación por ella le quita el sueño: cuando es joven, se le puede pasar la edad, y si está casada, puede ser aborrecida.
10 as a virgin, in case she should be defiled and found with child in her father's house, having a husband,in case she goes astray, married, in case she should be sterile!	10 Mientras es virgen, puede ser violada y quedar embarazada en la casa paterna. Si tiene marido, puede ser infiel, si ya convive, puede ser estéril.
11 Your daughter is headstrong? Keep a sharp look-out that she does not make you the laughing-stock ofyour enemies, the talk of the town, the object of common gossip, and put you to public shame.	11 Si tu hija es atrevida, vigílala bien, no sea que te convierta en la burla de tus enemigos, en la habladuría de la ciudad y el comentario de la gente, y te cubra de vergüenza a los ojos de todos.
12 Do not stare at any man for his good looks, do not sit down with women;	12 No fijes tus ojos en la belleza de nadie ni trates con familiaridad a las mujeres.
13 for moth comes out of clothes, and woman's spite out of woman.	13 Porque de la ropa sale la polilla y de la mujer, una malicia de mujer.
14 Better a man's spite than a woman's kindness: women give rise to shame and reproach.	14 Más vale malicia de hombre que bondad de mujer: una mujer avergüenza hasta la ignominia.
15 Next, I shal remind you of the works of the Lord, and tel of what I have seen. By the words of the Lordhis works come into being and all creation obeys his wil .	15 Ahora voy a recordar las obras del Señor, lo que yo he visto, lo voy a relatar: por las palabras del Señor existen sus obras.
16 The shining sun looks down on al things, and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.	16 El sol resplandeciente contempla todas las cosas, y la obra del Señor está llena de su gloria.
17 The Lord has not granted the Holy Ones the power to tell of all his marvels which the Almighty Lordhas solidly constructed for the universe to stand firm in his glory.	17 No ha sido posible a los santos del Señor relatar todas sus maravillas, las que el Señor todopoderoso estableció sólidamente para que el universo quedara afirmado en su gloria.
18 He has fathomed both the abyss and the human heart and seen into their devious ways; for the MostHigh knows all there is to know and sees the signs of the times.	18 El sondea el abismo y el corazón, y penetra en sus secretos designios, porque el Altísimo posee todo el conocimiento y observa los signos de los tiempos.
19 He declares what is past and what wil be, and reveals the trend of hidden things.	19 El anuncia el pasado y el futuro, y revela las huellas de las cosas ocultas:
20 Not a thought escapes him, not a single word is hidden from him.	20 ningún pensamiento se le escapa, ninguna palabra se le oculta.
21 He has embellished the magnificent works of his wisdom, he is from everlasting to everlasting, nothingcan be added to him, nothing taken away, he needs no one's advice.	21 El dispuso ordenadamente las grandes obras de su sabiduría, porque existe desde siempre y siempre; nada ha sido añadido, nada ha sido quitado, y él no tuvo necesidad de ningún consejero.
22 How lovely, all his works, how dazzling to the eye!	22 ¡Qué deseables son todas sus obras! Y lo que vemos es apenas una chispa!
23 They all live and last for ever, and, whatever the circumstances, al obey.	23 Todo tiene vida y permanece para siempre, y todo obedece a un fin determinado.
24 Al things go in pairs, by opposites, he has not made anything imperfect:	24 Todas las cosas van en pareja, una frente a otra, y él no ha hecho nada incompleto:
25 one thing complements the excel ence of another. Who could ever grow tired of gazing at his glory?	25 una cosa asegura el bien de la otra. ¿Quién se saciará de ver su gloria?
