Sirach 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Lord, father and master of my life, do not abandon me to their whims, do not let me fal because ofthem.	1 Signore, padre e padrone della mia vita, non mi abbandonare alle suggestioni delle mie labbra, non permettere che io cada a motivo di esse.
2 Who wil lay whips to my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom to my heart, to be merciless to myerrors and not let my sins go unchecked,	2 Chi farà sentire ai miei pensieri il flagello ed al mio cuore la disciplina della sapienza; affinchè mi sian risparmiate le loro follie e non spuntino fuori i loro peccati?
3 for fear my errors should multiply and my sins then abound and I fal before my adversaries, and myenemy gloat over me?	3 Affinchè non crescan le mie ignoranze, non si moltiplichino le mie colpe, non trabocchin dalla misura i miei peccati, e io non cada in faccia ai miei avversari, e di me non rida il mio nemico?
4 Lord, father and God of my life, do not let my eyes be proud,	4 O Signore, padre e , Dio della vita mia, non mi abbandonare al loro capriccio,
5 turn envy away from me,	5 non permettere nei miei occhi l'alterigia, allontana da me ogni concupiscenza,
6 do not let lechery and lust grip me, do not leave me a prey to shameless desire.	6 toglimi l'intemperanza del ventre, non mi lasciare in potere delle impure passioni, non mi abbandonare ad un'anima senza pudore e senza ritegno.
7 Children, listen to what I teach, no one who keeps it wil be caught out.	7 Figlioli, ascoltate la disciplina della bocca. Chi la osserverà non cadrà a causa delle labbra, e non inciamperà in opere malvage.
8 The sinner is ensnared by his own lips, both the abusive and the proud are tripped by them.	8 Il peccatore resta accalappiato nella sua stoltezza, e il superbo e il maldicente vi tro­vano occasione di caduta.
9 Do not get into the habit of swearing, do not make a habit of naming the Holy One;	9 Non avvezzare la tua bocca al giuramento, perchè da esso vengono molte cadute.
10 for just as a slave who is constantly overseen wil never be without bruises, so someone who is alwaysswearing and uttering the Name wil not be exempt from sin.	10 Il nome di Dio non sia troppo spesso sulla tua bocca, e non mescolare (al discorso) il nome dei santi, perchè non ne andrai impunito.
11 A man for ever swearing is full of iniquity, and the scourge wil not depart from his house. If he offends,his sin wil be on him, if he did it unheedingly, he has doubly sinned; if he swears a false oath, he wil not betreated as innocent, for his house wil be fil ed with calamities.	11 Infatti, come lo schiavo messo spesso alla tortura non sarà esente da lividure, così chi giura e nomina Dio continuamente non sarà del tutto libero dal peccato.
12 One way of talking is like death, let it not be found in the heritage of Jacob since devout people havenothing to do with that: they wil not wal ow in sin.	12 L'uomo che giura molto si empirà di peccati, e il flagello non partirà dalla sua casa.
13 Do not get into the habit of using coarse and foul language since this involves sinful words.	13 E se non adempie (il giuramento) il suo delitto sarà sopra di lui, e se non ne farà conto il suo peccato sarà doppio,
14 Remember your father and mother when you are sitting with the great, for fear you forget yourself intheir presence and behave like a fool, and then wish you had not been born and curse the day of your birth.	14 e se ha giurato invano, non sarà giustificato e la sua casa sarà piena di castighi.
15 No one in the habit of using shameful language wil break himself of it as long as he lives.	15 C'è anche un altro linguaggio che sta davanti alla morte: che esso non si trovi nell'eredità di Giacobbe.
16 There are two types of people who commit sin after sin and a third who attracts retribution-	16 Tutte queste cose staran lungi dai misericordiosi, ed essi non sommergeranno nei delitti.
17 desire, blazing like a furnace, wil not die down until it has been sated- the man who lusts aftermembers of his own family is not going to stop until he is quite burnt out; every food is sweet to the promiscuous,and he wil not desist until he dies;	17 Non si avvezzi la tua bocca allo sfrenato parlare, perchè in esso v'è la parola del peccato.
18 and the man who sins against the marriage bed and says to himself, 'Who can see me? There isdarkness all round me, the wal s hide me, no one can see me, why should I worry? The Most High wil notremember my sins.'	18 Ricordati di tuo padre e di tua madre quando stai in mezzo ai grandi,
19 What he fears are human eyes, he does not realise that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand timesbrighter than the sun, observing every aspect of human behaviour, seeing into the most secret corners.	19 affinchè Dio non si scordi di te in loro presenza, e tu, infatuato per la familiarità con essi, non abbia improperi da desiderar di non esser mai nato, da maledire il giorno della tua nascita.
20 Al things were known to him before they were created, and are stil , now that they are finished.	20 L'uomo avvezzo alle parole oltraggiose non si correggerà in tutto il tempo della sua vita.
21 This man will be punished in view of the whole town, and wil be seized when he least expects it.	21 Due sorta di persone fanno molti peccati, e la terza si attira l'ira e la perdizione:
22 Similarly the woman unfaithful to her husband, who provides him with an heir by another man:	22 L'anima che brucia come ardente fiamma, e non si spegnerà prima d'aver divorato qualche cosa;
23 first, she has disobeyed the Law of the Most High; secondly, she has been false to her husband; andthirdly, she has gone whoring in adultery	23 l'uomo che pecca colla propria carne, e non cesserà finché non farà divampare il fuoco;
24 and conceived children by another man. She will be led before the assembly, an enquiry will be heldabout her children.	24 per l'uomo dedito alla fornicazione ogni pane è saporito, non cesserà di peccare sino alla fine.
25 Her children wil strike no root, her branches wil bear no fruit.	25 Ogni uomo che profana il suo letto (coniugale), che disprezza la sua anima e dice: « Chi mi vede?
26 She wil leave an accursed memory behind her, her shame wil never be wiped out.	26 Le tenebre mi circondano, le pareti mi nascondono, nessuno mi vede; di che temere? L'Altissimo non si ricorderà dei miei delitti »,
27 And those who survive her wil recognise that nothing is better than fearing the Lord, and nothingsweeter than adherence to the Lord's commandments.	27 e non riflette che l'occhio di Dio vede tutto. Perchè tal timore dell'uomo caccia da lui il timore di Dio, i suoi occhi han soltanto il timore degli uomini,
	28 e non pensa che gli occhi del Signore son molto più luminosi del sole, osservano ogni passo dell'uomo, il profondo dell'abisso, e vedono i cuori umani nelle parti più nascoste;
	29 perchè il Signore Dio conosceva tutte le cose prima che fossero create, e dopo averle fatte le mira tutte.
	30 Un tal uomo sarà punito sulla piazza della città, sarà messo in fuga come puledro, e sarà agguantato dove non se l'aspetta,
	31 e sarà disonorato davanti a tutti, perchè non conobbe il timore del Signore.
	32 Così pure sarà d'ogni donna che lascia il suo marito e gli dà come erede il nato da un altro.
	33 Prima di tutto essa non ha creduto alla legge dell'Altissimo, in secondo luogo ha peccato contro il proprio marito, in terzo luogo si contamina coll'adulterio e si fa dei figlioli da un altro uomo.
	34 Questa donna sarà condotta nell'assemblea e sarà interrogata riguardo ai suoi figlioli.
	35 I figli di lei non metteranno radici, i suoi rami non daran frutto:
	36 Lascerà una memoria maledetta, e il suo disonore non sarà mai cancellato.
	37 E i superstiti riconosceranno che non c'è di meglio del timor di Dio, e che nulla è più dolce che osservare i comandamenti del Signore.
	38 E' grande gloria seguire il Signore: è da lui che si riceverà la lunga vita.
