Sirach 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Lord, father and master of my life, do not abandon me to their whims, do not let me fal because ofthem.	1 Signore, Padre e signore della mia vita, non m'abbandonare al loro capriccio, e non permetter ch'io cada per via di loro.
2 Who wil lay whips to my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom to my heart, to be merciless to myerrors and not let my sins go unchecked,	2 Chi applicherà la sferza ai miei pensieri, e al mio cuore la correzione della sapienza, perchè non mi si risparmi nelle loro mancanze, e non si lascin correre i loro misfatti?
3 for fear my errors should multiply and my sins then abound and I fal before my adversaries, and myenemy gloat over me?	3 affinchè non si accrescano i miei falli, e non si moltiplichino i miei delitti e abbondino i miei peccati, e io cada al cospetto de' miei avversari, e goda di me il mio nemico?
4 Lord, father and God of my life, do not let my eyes be proud,	4 Signore, Padre e Dio della mia vita, non mi abbandonare al loro capriccio,
5 turn envy away from me,	5 non mi dare eccitazione d'occhi, e ogni concupiscenza tien lontana da me.
6 do not let lechery and lust grip me, do not leave me a prey to shameless desire.	6 Togli da me gli appetiti della carne, e la libidine non s'impossessi di me, e a uno spirito imprudente e stolto non m'abbandonare,
7 Children, listen to what I teach, no one who keeps it wil be caught out.	7 La disciplina della bocca ascoltate, o figliuoli, e chi l'osserverà, non si perderà a cagion dèlie labbra, nè sdrucciolerà in opere malvage.
8 The sinner is ensnared by his own lips, both the abusive and the proud are tripped by them.	8 [Per via delle labbra] resterà preso il peccatore nella sua vanità, e il superbioso e il maledico sdruccioleranno per via d'esse.
9 Do not get into the habit of swearing, do not make a habit of naming the Holy One;	9 Al giuramento non abituar la tua bocca, molte invero son le cadute per causa di esso,
10 for just as a slave who is constantly overseen wil never be without bruises, so someone who is alwaysswearing and uttering the Name wil not be exempt from sin.	10 e il nome di Dio non sia del continuo sulla tua bocca; nè t'immischiare coi nomi de' santi, perchè non ne andrai impunito.
11 A man for ever swearing is full of iniquity, and the scourge wil not depart from his house. If he offends,his sin wil be on him, if he did it unheedingly, he has doubly sinned; if he swears a false oath, he wil not betreated as innocent, for his house wil be fil ed with calamities.	11 Come uno schiavo messo continuamente alla tortura, non manca di lividure; cosi chi giura e pronunzia [ogni momento] il Nome [del Signore], non sarà puro da peccato.
12 One way of talking is like death, let it not be found in the heritage of Jacob since devout people havenothing to do with that: they wil not wal ow in sin.	12 L'uomo che molto giurò, si rimpinza d'iniquità, e non s'allontanerà dalla sua casa il flagello.
13 Do not get into the habit of using coarse and foul language since this involves sinful words.	13 Se mancherà [al giuramento], il suo peccato graverà su lui, e se ci passa sopra, pecca doppiamente.
14 Remember your father and mother when you are sitting with the great, for fear you forget yourself intheir presence and behave like a fool, and then wish you had not been born and curse the day of your birth.	14 Se falsamente giura, non sarà giustificato; perchè sarà ricolma di castighi la casa di lui.
15 No one in the habit of using shameful language wil break himself of it as long as he lives.	15 C'è anche un altro parlare che ha di fronte la morte: non si ritrovi nell'eredità di Giacobbe!
16 There are two types of people who commit sin after sin and a third who attracts retribution-	16 Dagli uomini pii invero stan lungi tutte queste cose: non si ravvoltolano essi ne' peccati!
17 desire, blazing like a furnace, wil not die down until it has been sated- the man who lusts aftermembers of his own family is not going to stop until he is quite burnt out; every food is sweet to the promiscuous,and he wil not desist until he dies;	17 Al turpiloquio non s'avvezzi la tua bocca, perchè v'ha in esso parole di peccato.
18 and the man who sins against the marriage bed and says to himself, 'Who can see me? There isdarkness all round me, the wal s hide me, no one can see me, why should I worry? The Most High wil notremember my sins.'	18 Ricordati di tuo padre e di tua madre, quando siedi in mezzo ai grandi;
19 What he fears are human eyes, he does not realise that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand timesbrighter than the sun, observing every aspect of human behaviour, seeing into the most secret corners.	19 affinchè non si dimentichi Iddio alla lor presenza, e, infatuato per la tua famigliarità [con essi], tu non subisca una mortificazione; sicché tu abbia a preferire di non esser nato, e maledica il giorno della tua nascita.
20 Al things were known to him before they were created, and are stil , now that they are finished.	20 L'uomo avvezzo al parlare oltraggioso, non acquisterà mal educazione in tutti i giorni della sua vita.
21 This man will be punished in view of the whole town, and wil be seized when he least expects it.	21 Due classi [di persone] moltiplicano i peccati, e la terza s'attira lo sdegno e la perdizione.
22 Similarly the woman unfaithful to her husband, who provides him with an heir by another man:	22 L'animo acceso [da passione] è come un fuoco ardente; non si spengerà finché non abbia divorato qualcosa.
23 first, she has disobeyed the Law of the Most High; secondly, she has been false to her husband; andthirdly, she has gone whoring in adultery	23 E l'uomo ch' è malvagio di fronte alla sua carne, non cesserà finché non abbia fatto divampare il fuoco.
24 and conceived children by another man. She will be led before the assembly, an enquiry will be heldabout her children.	24 Al lussurioso ogni pane è gustoso, e non si stancherà di peccare sino alla morte.
25 Her children wil strike no root, her branches wil bear no fruit.	25 Ogni uomo, che diserta dal proprio talamo, sprezza l'anima sua e dice: «Chi mi vede?
26 She wil leave an accursed memory behind her, her shame wil never be wiped out.	26 Le tenebre mi circondano e le pareti mi coprono e nessuno mi vede: chi ho da temere? De' miei misfatti non si ricorderà l'Altissimo!».
27 And those who survive her wil recognise that nothing is better than fearing the Lord, and nothingsweeter than adherence to the Lord's commandments.	27 E non intende che l'occhio del Signore vede ogni cosa, perchè il timore di siffatto uomo caccia via da sè il timor di Dio, e [solo] gli occhi degli uomini sono il suo timore.
	28 E non sa che gli occhi del Signore sono assai più lucenti del sole, e rimirano tutti i passi degli uomini e l'abisso profondo, e scrutano i cuori degli uomini ne' [più] segreti recessi.
	29 Prima d'esser create, tutte le cose eran note al Signore Iddio, e così pure, dopo compiute, egli rimira ogni cosa!
	30 Quest'[adultero] nelle vie della città sarà punito, e qual puledro equino sarà messo in fuga, e dove meno s'aspettava, sarà acchiappato.
	31 E sarà un'ignominia per tutti, perchè non conobbe il timor di Dio.
	32 Così parimenti ogni donna che lascia il proprio marito, e apparecchia un erede da estraneo coniugio.
	33 Primieramente infatti ella fu ribelle alla legge dell'Altissimo, poi peccò contro il suo marito, in terzo luogo fornicò nell'adulterio, e da un altro uomo si procacciò figliuoli.
	34 Costei sarà portata davanti l'adunanza, e sui suoi figliuoli ricadrà il castigo.
	35 Non metteran radice i suoi figliuoli, e i rami di lei non porteranno frutto.
	36 Lascerà in maledizione la sua memoria, e la sua infamia non sarà cancellata.
	37 E conosceranno quei che sopravvivono, come nulla v'ha di meglio del timor del Signore, e nulla di più dolce che osservare i comandamenti del Signore»
	38 Grande gloria è seguire il Signore, e lunghezza di giorni si riceverà da lui.
