1 'God of our ancestors, Lord of mercy, who by your word have made the universe,	1 Dio dei miei padri, e Signore di misericordia, che tutto hai creato colla tua Parola,
2 and in your wisdom have fitted human beings to rule the creatures that you have made,	2 e colla tua sapienza, hai formato l'uomo, af­finchè domini sulle creature da te fatte,
3 to govern the world in holiness and saving justice and in honesty of soul to dispense fair judgement,	3 e governi il mondo con equità e giustizia, rendendo giu­stizia con animo retto,
4 grant me Wisdom, consort of your throne, and do not reject me from the number of your children.	4 dammi la sapienza che assiste al tuo tro­no, e non mi escludere dal numero dei tuoi figli.
5 For I am your servant, son of your serving maid, a feeble man, with little time to live, with smalunderstanding of justice and the laws.	5 Perchè io son tuo servo e figlio di tua ancella, uomo fragile e di corta vita e in­ capace d'intendere i giudizi e le leggi.
6 Indeed, were anyone perfect among the sons of men, if he lacked the Wisdom that comes from you, hewould still count for nothing.	6 Del resto, anche se uno fosse il piu perfetto degli uomini, senza la tua sapienza sarà stima­to un niente.
7 'You have chosen me to be king over your people, to be judge of your sons and daughters.	7 Tu mi hai eletto re del tuo popolo, e giudice dei tuoi figli e figlie;
8 You have bidden me build a temple on your holy mountain, and an altar in the city where you havepitched your tent, a copy of the holy Tent which you prepared at the beginning.	8 m'hai ordinato di fabbricarti un tempio nel tuo monte santo, e, nella città della tua dimora, un'altare, copia del tuo santo tabernacolo, da te di­ sposto da principio.
9 With you is Wisdom, she who knows your works, she who was present when you made the world; sheunderstands what is pleasing in your eyes and what agrees with your commandments.	9 Teco è la sa­pienza, che ben conosce le tue opere; essa era presente quando creavi il mondo, e sapeva ciò che fosse gradito agli occhi tuoi, e ret­to secondo i tuoi comandamenti.
10 Despatch her from the holy heavens, send her forth from your throne of glory to help me and to toilwith me and teach me what is pleasing to you;	10 Mandala dai santi tuoi cieli, e dal trono della tua grandezza, af­finché m'assista ed operi meco, in modo ch'io sappia quello che ti è gradito:
11 since she knows and understands everything she wil guide me prudently in my actions and wil protectme with her glory.	11 essa, che tutto sa e comprende, mi guiderà con pru­denza nelle mie imprese, e mi pro­teggerà colla sua potenza;
12 Then al I do wil be acceptable, I shal govern your people justly and be worthy of my father's throne.	12 e saranno accette le mie opere, e go­vernerò con giustizia il tuo popo­lo, e sarò degno del trono di mio padre.
13 'What human being indeed can know the intentions of God? And who can comprehend the wil of theLord?	13 Chi tra gli uomini potrà conoscere i consigli di Dio? E chi potrà pensare quello che Dio vo­glia?
14 For the reasoning of mortals is inadequate, our attitudes of mind unstable;	14 Timidi sono i pensieri dei mortali e incerti i nostri provve­ dimenti;
15 for a perishable body presses down the soul, and this tent of clay weighs down the mind with its many cares.	15 perchè il corpo, che si corrompe, aggrava l'anima, e la dimora terrestre deprime lo spi­rito che ha molti pensieri.
16 It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach; who,then, can discover what is in the heavens?	16 Con difficoltà diciamo il nostro pare­re sulle cose della terra, e a mala pena troviamo le cose che abbia­mo davanti agli occhi: or chi po­trà scoprire quelle che sono in cielo?
17 And who could ever have known your will, had you not given Wisdom and sent your holy Spirit fromabove?	17 Chi potrà conoscere il tuo sentimento, se tu non gli dài la sapienza, e non mandi dal più al­to dei cieli il tuo santo spirito,
18 Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightened and people have been taught what pleasesyou, and have been saved, by Wisdom.'	18 in modo che sian raddrizzate le vie di quelli che sono sulla terra, e gli uomini sappiano quello che ti è gradito?
	19 Infatti per la sa­pienza furon salvati tutti quelli che a te, o Signore, piacquero fin da principio.
