1 'God of our ancestors, Lord of mercy, who by your word have made the universe,	1 « Dio de' miei padri e Signore di misericordia, tu che tutto hai creato con la tua parola,
2 and in your wisdom have fitted human beings to rule the creatures that you have made,	2 e con la tua sapienza hai formato l’uomo, perchè egli domini sulle creature fatte da te,
3 to govern the world in holiness and saving justice and in honesty of soul to dispense fair judgement,	3 e regga il mondo con equità e giustizia, e giudichi con rettitudine d'animo;
4 grant me Wisdom, consort of your throne, and do not reject me from the number of your children.	4 dammi la sapienza ch'è assisa presso il tuo trono, e non mi rigettar dal [numero de'] tuoi figliuoli.
5 For I am your servant, son of your serving maid, a feeble man, with little time to live, with smalunderstanding of justice and the laws.	5 Perchè tuo schiavo io sono e figliuolo d’una tua serva, uomo debole e di vita breve, e troppo inesperto in giudizio e nelle leggi.
6 Indeed, were anyone perfect among the sons of men, if he lacked the Wisdom that comes from you, hewould still count for nothing.	6 Fosse pur perfetto uno tra i figliuoli degli uomini, se gli manca la sapienza che vien da te, sarà contato per nulla.
7 'You have chosen me to be king over your people, to be judge of your sons and daughters.	7 Tu m’ hai scelto re del tuo popolo e giudice de’ tuoi figliuoli e figliuole.
8 You have bidden me build a temple on your holy mountain, and an altar in the city where you havepitched your tent, a copy of the holy Tent which you prepared at the beginning.	8 M'hai ordinato di edificare un tempio sul tuo santo monte e un altare nella città della tua dimora, imitazione del tabernacolo santo che ti preparasti da principio.
9 With you is Wisdom, she who knows your works, she who was present when you made the world; sheunderstands what is pleasing in your eyes and what agrees with your commandments.	9 Con te è la tua sapienza, che conosce le tue opere, ed era presente quando facevi il mondo, e sa ciò che piace agli occhi tuoi e quel ch'è retto secondo i tuoi comandamenti.
10 Despatch her from the holy heavens, send her forth from your throne of glory to help me and to toilwith me and teach me what is pleasing to you;	10 Mandala giu dal cielo tuo santo e dal trono della tua gloria; affinchè sia meco e meco lavori, e io sappia quel ch’è accetto a te.
11 since she knows and understands everything she wil guide me prudently in my actions and wil protectme with her glory.	11 Perchè ella tutto sa e intende, e mi guiderà nelle mie azioni con prudenza, e mi custodirà con la sua potenza.
12 Then al I do wil be acceptable, I shal govern your people justly and be worthy of my father's throne.	12 E saranno accette le mie opere, e governerò il tuo popolo con giustizia, e sarò degno del trono del padre mio.
13 'What human being indeed can know the intentions of God? And who can comprehend the wil of theLord?	13 Qual uomo Invero può conoscere i consigli di Dio, o chi scrutare ciò che vuole il Signore?
14 For the reasoning of mortals is inadequate, our attitudes of mind unstable;	14 Timidi sono i ragionamenti de' mortali e malsicuri i nostri divisamenti.
15 for a perishable body presses down the soul, and this tent of clay weighs down the mind with its many cares.	15 Perchè il corpo corruttibile aggrava l'anima, e il tabernacolo terreno opprime la mente agitata da molti pensieri.
16 It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach; who,then, can discover what is in the heavens?	16 Congetturiamo a mala pena le cose della terra, e con fatica troviamo quelle che abbiam davanti [e per le mani] quelle che son ne' cieli chi le scruterà?
17 And who could ever have known your will, had you not given Wisdom and sent your holy Spirit fromabove?	17 Chi conoscerà 11 tuo volere, se tu non gli largirai sapienza, e non gli manderai dall'alto il tuo santo spirito? onde sian raddrizzate le vie di quei che sono in terra, e gli uomini apprendano le cose a te gradite?
18 Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightened and people have been taught what pleasesyou, and have been saved, by Wisdom.'	18 Invero per mezzo della sapienza furon salvi tutti quelli che a te piacquero, o Signore» sin da principio. »
