2 Maccabees 5

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 At about this time, Antiochus was preparing for his second attack on Egypt.	1 Por essa ocasião, Antíoco organizou sua segunda expedição ao Egito.
2 It then happened that al over the city for nearly forty days there were apparitions of horsemengalloping through the air in cloth of gold, troops of lancers ful y armed,	2 Aconteceu que em toda a cidade e por mais de quarenta dias apareceram, correndo pelos ares, cavaleiros vestidos de ouro e armados com lanças, coortes armadas, espadas desembainhadas,
3 squadrons of cavalry in order of battle, attacks and charges this way and that, a flourish of shields, aforest of pikes, a brandishing of swords, a hurling of missiles, a glittering of golden accoutrements and armour of al kinds.	3 esquadrões alinhados para a batalha, perseguições e choques de um lado e de outro, movimentos de escudos, florestas de lanças, tiros de dardos, armaduras de ouro resplandecentes e couraças de todo o gênero.
4 So everyone prayed that this manifestation might prove a good omen.	4 Por isso, todos rezavam para que tais aparições produzissem felizes resultados.
5 Then, on the strength of a false report that Antiochus was dead, Jason took at least a thousand menand launched an unexpected attack on the city. When the wal s had been breached and the city was final y onthe point of being taken, Menelaus took refuge in the Citadel.	5 Espalhando-se a notícia, aliás falsa, da morte de Antíoco, Jasão tomou consigo ao menos mil homens e atacou a cidade de improviso. Travou-se o combate sobre os muros e a cidade estava já tomada, quando Menelau fugiu para a Acrópole.
6 Jason, however, made a pitiless slaughter of his fel ow-citizens, oblivious of the fact that successagainst his own countrymen was the greatest of disasters, but rather picturing himself as winning trophies fromsome enemy, and not from his fel ow- countrymen.	6 Jasão massacrou sem piedade seus próprios concidadãos, esquecendo-se de que uma vitória ganha sobre compatriotas é a maior das desgraças, e agiu como se alcançasse um troféu dos seus inimigos e não dos seus congêneres.
7 Even so, he did not manage to seize power; and, in the end, his machinations brought him nothing butshame, and he took refuge once more in Ammanitis.	7 Todavia, não lhe foi possível conquistar o poder, e só recolhendo de sua maquinação a vergonha, fugiu de novo para a terra dos amonitas.
8 His career of wickedness was thus brought to a halt: imprisoned by Aretas, the Arab despot, escapingfrom his town, hunted by everyone, detested for having overthrown the laws, abhorred as the butcher of hiscountry and his countrymen, he drifted to Egypt.	8 Pereceu, enfim, miseravelmente, porque, acusado junto de Aretas, rei dos árabes, fugiu de cidade em cidade e, perseguido por todos, detestado como violador de leis, desprezado como carrasco de sua pátria e de seus concidadãos, foi levado para o Egito.
9 He who had exiled so many from their fatherland, himself perished on foreign soil, having travel ed toSparta, hoping that, for kinship's sake, he might find harbour there.	9 Aquele que tinha lançado fora de sua pátria tanta gente pereceu numa terra estrangeira, tendo ido para junto dos espartanos, com a esperança de ali encontrar refúgio, por causa de uma origem comum
10 So many carcases he had thrust out to lie unburied; now he himself had none to mourn him, nofuneral rites, no place in the tomb of his ancestors.	10 e, após ter lançado por terra tantos homens, sem sepultá-los, não foi chorado por ninguém, não recebeu as honras dos funerais e nem um lugar no túmulo de seus pais.
11 When the king came to hear of what had happened, he concluded that Judaea was in revolt. Hetherefore marched from Egypt, raging like a wild beast, and began by storming the city.	11 Quando a notícia desses acontecimentos chegou aos ouvidos do rei, ele concluiu que a Judéia queria desertar. Trazendo seu exército do Egito, com o ânimo enfurecido, conquistou a cidade de assalto,
12 He then ordered his soldiers to cut down without mercy everyone they encountered, and to butcher allwho took refuge in their houses.	12 e ordenou aos soldados que matassem sem compaixão aqueles que caíssem em suas mãos e que degolassem os que se refugiassem nas casas.
13 It was a massacre of young and old, a slaughter of women and children, a butchery of young girls andinfants.	13 Houve, pois, mortandade de jovens e de velhos, carnificina de homens, de mulheres e de crianças, massacre de donzelas e de meninos.
14 There were eighty thousand victims in the course of those three days, forty thousand dying byviolence and as many again being sold into slavery.	14 Em três dias houve oitenta mil vítimas, das quais quarenta mil foram mortas e outras tantas vendidas como escravas.
15 Not content with this, he had the audacity to enter the holiest Temple in the entire world, withMenelaus, that traitor to the laws and to his country, as his guide;	15 Não satisfeito com isso, o rei ousou penetrar no templo, o mais santo de toda a terra, conduzido por Menelau, que foi infiel às leis e à pátria.
16 with impure hands he seized the sacred vessels; with impious hands he seized the offeringspresented by other kings for the aggrandisement, glory and dignity of the holy place.	16 Tomou com as mãos profanas os vasos sagrados e com mãos impuras apoderou-se das oferendas feitas pelos reis anteriores, para proveito, honra e glória do templo.
17 Holding so high an opinion of himself, Antiochus did not realise that the Lord was temporarily angry atthe sins of the inhabitants of the city, hence his unconcern for the holy place.	17 Antíoco enchia-se de orgulho, mas não percebia que o Senhor momentaneamente se havia irritado por causa dos pecados dos habitantes da cidade: daí essa indiferença pelo templo,
18 Had they not been entangled in many sins, Antiochus too, like Heliodorus when King Seleucus senthim to inspect the Treasury, would have been flogged the moment he arrived and checked in his presumption.	18 porque, se os judeus não fossem por demais culpáveis, a exemplo de Heliodoro, enviado pelo rei Seleuco para inspecionar o tesouro, ele teria sido flagelado logo que chegou, e dissuadido de sua audácia.
19 The Lord, however, had not chosen the people for the sake of the holy place, but the holy place forthe sake of the people;	19 Na verdade, Deus não escolheu o povo por causa do templo, mas escolheu o templo por causa do povo; 20. foi por isso que aquele, depois de ter participado dos males do povo, teve em seguida parte com ele nos favores divinos e, desamparado no tempo da cólera, foi restaurado com toda a sua glória por ocasião da reconciliação com o soberano Senhor.
20 and so the holy place itself, having shared the disasters that befel the people, in due course alsoshared their good fortune; having been abandoned by the Almighty in his anger, once the great Sovereign wasplacated it was reinstated in al its glory.
21 Antiochus, having extracted eighteen hundred talents from the Temple, hurried back to Antioch; in hispride he would have undertaken to make the dry land navigable and the sea passable on foot, so high hisarrogance soared.	21 Tendo Antíoco roubado ao templo mil e oitocentos talentos, voltou sem demora para Antioquia. Com o espírito exaltado, ele cria, em sua soberba, poder navegar sobre a terra e caminhar sobre o mar.
22 But he left officials behind to plague the nation: in Jerusalem, Philip, a Phrygian by race, and bynature more barbarous than the man who appointed him;	22 Contudo, por motivo de seu ódio para com os judeus, deixou atrás de si oficiais com a incumbência de molestar o povo: em Jerusalém, Filipe, da Frígia, mais bárbaro ainda que seu senhor;
23 on Mount Gerizim, Andronicus; and, besides these, Menelaus, who lorded it over his countrymenworse than al the others. In his rooted hostility to the Jews,	23 no monte Garizim, Andrônico e, adjunto a estes, Menelau, que se encarniçava contra seus concidadãos de modo mais terrível que os outros.
24 the king also sent the Mysarch Apollonius at the head of an army twenty-two thousand strong, withorders to put to death al men in their prime and to sel the women and children.	24 Enviou também o misarca Apolônio à frente de um poderoso exército de vinte e dois mil homens, com a ordem de matar todos os adultos e de vender as mulheres e as crianças.
25 Arriving in Jerusalem and posing as a man of peace, this man waited until the holy day of the Sabbathand then, taking advantage of the Jews as they rested from work, ordered his men to parade ful y armed;	25 Chegou pois este a Jerusalém, fingindo intenções pacíficas; esperou até o dia santo de sábado e, apanhando os judeus desocupados, ordenou às suas tropas pegarem em armas.
26 al those who came out to watch he put to the sword; then, rushing into the city with his armed troops,he cut down an immense number of people.	26 Todos os que saíram para ver o espetáculo foram massacrados e, percorrendo a cidade com seus soldados, matou um grande número de pessoas.
27 Judas, also known as Maccabaeus, however, with about nine others, withdrew into the desert. Helived like the wild animals in the hil s with his companions, eating nothing but wild plants to avoid contractingdefilement.	27 Judas Macabeu retirou-se com um grupo de outros homens para o deserto, vivendo com os seus companheiros nas montanhas como animais selvagens e alimentando-se de plantas para não se contaminarem.
