1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 Conclusi questi patti, Lisia se ne tornò dal re, e i Giudei si diedero a coltivare la terra.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Ma quelli che eran rimasti nella regione, Timoteo, Apollonio, figlio di Genneo, e Girolamo e Demofonte, e oltre a questi Nicànore, governatore di Cipro, non li lasciavano bene avere nè vivere in pace.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;	3 Or quelli di loppe commisero questo delitto: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano in mezzo a loro a salire colle mogli e coi figli sulle barche da loro preparate, come se non ci fosse nessuna inimicizia tra di loro.
4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.	4 E per decreto fatto in comune dalla città, al quale essi accondiscesero, non avendo a causa della pace alcun sospetto, quando furono in alto mare li sommersero in numero non minore di duecento.
5 When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men	5 Giuda appena seppe la crudeltà commessa contro uomini della sua nazione, diede gli ordini alla sua gente, e, invocato Dio, giusto giudice,
6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 marciò contro gli uccisori dei (suoi) fratelli, e di notte diede alle fiamme il porto, bruciò le barche, e trucidò colla spada quelli che erano scampati al fuoco.
7 As the town gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come back and wipe out the wholecommunity of Joppa.	7 Fatto questo partì, ma coll'intenzione di tornare di nuovo e sterminare tutti i cittadini di loppe.
8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Ma avendo saputo che anche quelli di Iamnia volevano trattare nella medesima maniera i Giudei che abitavano tra loro,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 piombò pure di notte sopra quelli di Iamnia, e diede fuoco al porto e alle navi, in modo che le fiamme dell'incendio si vedevano da Gerusalemme, alla distanza di duecentoquaranta stadi.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 Partito di lì, dopo aver fatto nove stadi per andare contro Timoteo, lo attaccarono gli Arabi con cinque mila fanti e cinquecento cavalieri.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 Dopo aspro combattimento, che coll'aiuto di Dio andò a finir bene, quelli che restavano degli Arabi vinti chiedevano a Giuda che desse loro la destra, promettendo di cedergli dei pascoli e di essergli utili in ogni altra cosa.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Giuda, persuaso che veramente potevano essergli utili in molte cose, promise la pace, e quelli, ricevute le destre, se ne andarono alle loro tende.
13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Poi (Giuda) attaccò una città forte, circondata di ponti e di mura, abitata da turbe di diverse nazioni e chiamata Casfin.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Or quelli che vi eran dentro, fidando sulla saldezza delle mura e sulle provvisioni di viveri, non si davan pena d'agire, e provccavan Giuda cogli insulti, colle bestemmie e con parole nefande.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 Ma Maccabeo, invocato il gran Re del mondo, il quale senza arieti e senza macchine al tempo di Giosuè atterrò Gerico, balzò fieramente sopra le mura;
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 e, presa per volontà del Signore la città, vi fece immensa strage, tale che il vicino lago, largo due stadi, sembrava tinto del sangue degli uccisi.
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 Partiti di là, dopo un viaggio di settecentocinquanta stadi, giunsero a Caraca, presso quei Giudei che sono detti Tubianei.
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 Ma non poteron prendere in quei luoghi Timoteo, il quale senza aver fatto nulla, tornò indietro, lasciando in dato luogo fortissima guarnigione.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 Allora Dositeo e Sosipatro, che eran capitani dei soldati insieme con Maccabeo, uccisero dieci mila uomini lasciati da Timoteo in quella fortezza.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 invece Maccabeo, messi in ordine intorno a sè sei mila uomini, divisi per coorti, si avanzò contro Timoteo, che aveva seco centoventi mila fanti e due mila cinquecento cavalieri.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Saputo dell'arrivo di Giuda, Timoteo mandò innanzi le donne e i ragazzi e il resto dei bagagli in una fortezza chiamata Carnion, chè era inespugnabile e di difficile accesso per la strettezza dei luoghi.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 Ma all'apparire della prima coorte di Giuda, lo spavento s'impadronì dei nemici, per la presenza di Dio che tutto vede, e furon messi in fuga gli uni dagli altri, in modo che erano più che altro rovesciati dalla loro gente, e feriti dalle proprie spade.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 E Giuda li inseguiva accanitamente, per punir quei profani; e ne prostrò trentamila.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 Lo stesso Timoteo, caduto in potere delle schiere guidate da Dositeo e da Sosipatro, con molte preghiere si raccomandava di aver salva la vita, (dicendo) d'avere in suo potere molti parenti e fratelli dei Giudei, che, morto lui, sarebbero senza speranza.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 Siccome dette la parola di restituirli secondo i patti convenuti, lo lasciarono andare sano e salvo per la salute dei fratelli.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 Intanto Giuda marciava contro Camion, e vi uccideva venticinque mila uomini.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Dopo avere messi in fuga e sterminati questi, mosse l'esercito contro Efron, città fortificata e abitata da una moltitudine di diverse nazioni; dei giovani robusti, stando a difesa delle mura, facevano grande resistenza; vi erano molte macchine e grandi depositi di frecce.
28 But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.	28 Ma (i Giudei), invocato l'Onnipotente, Colui che colla sua potenza schiaccia le forze dei nemici, presero la città, e di quelli che v'eran dentro ne stesero al suolo venticinque mila.
29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Partiti di là marciarono contro la città degli Sciti, distante seicento stadi da Gerusalemme.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Ma, siccome i Giudei che abitavano tra quelli di Scitopoli testimoniavano di essere da essi trattati benignamente e che anche nei tempi tristi erano stati trattati con moderazione,
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 Li ringraziarono e li esortarono a continuare nella loro benignità verso la loro nazione, e tornarono a Gerusalemme mentre era imminente la festa delle settimane. Giuda vince Gorgia e fa sacrifici per i morti
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 Dopo la Pentecoste marciarono contro Gorgia governatore dell'Idumea,
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 Il quale avanzava con tre mila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 Attaccata la battaglia, alcuni dei Giudei rimasero uccisi.
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 Or mentre un certo Dositeo, cavaliere di Bacenore e valoroso, metteva le mani addosso a Gorgia per prenderlo vivo, un cavaliere Trace gli fu addosso e gli tagliò una spalla, e cosi Gorgia fuggì a Maresa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Or siccome gli uomini di Esdrin dopo aver lungamente combattuto erano stanchi, Giuda invocò il Signore, affinchè fosse loro protettore e duce nella battaglia,
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 e poi, cantando ad alta voce inni nel lin­guaggio natio, mise in fuga i soldati di Gorgia.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 In seguito Giuda radunato l'esercito, giunse alla città di Odollam, e giunto il settimo giorno della settimana, purificatisi secondo il rito, celebrarono il sabato in quel medesimo luogo.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 Il giorno seguente Giuda coi suoi andò a prendere i corpi degli uccisi, per seppellirli coi loro parenti nelle tombe paterne.
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 Sotto le tuniche degli uccisi trovarono degli oggetti consacrati agl'idoli che erano stati in Iamnia, cose dalla legge proibite ai Giudei, e tutti furori persuasi che ciò fosse stato causa della loro morte.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 E tutti benedissero il giusto giudizio del Signore che aveva manifestato il male nascosto.
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 E poi si misero a pregare perchè fosse perdonato il delitto commesso. Allora il valorosissimo Giuda esortò il popolo a conservarsi senza peccato, giacché aveva visto coi propri! occhi quanto era accaduto per il peccato di quelli che erano stati uccisi.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 Fatta poi una colletta, mandò a Gerusalemme dodici mila dramme d'argento, perchè fosse offerto il sacrifizio per i peccati di quei defunti, rettamente e piamente pensando intorno alla risurrezione.
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 Infatti se non avesse sperai o nella loro risurrezione, superfluo e inutile sarebbe (a lui) sembrato pregare per i morti.
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 Egli invece pensò che grande ricompensa è riserbata a coloro che muoiono piamente.
	46 Santo adunque e salutare è il pensiero di pregare per i morti, affinchè siano sciolti dai loro peccati.
