1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 - Conchiusi questi patti, Lisia, ritornò ai re, ed i Giudei attèndevano a coltivare i loro campi.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Ma quelli [de' Siri] che eran rimasti, Timoteo ed Apollonio figlio di Genneo, come anche Girolamo e Demofonte, ed inoltre Nicanore prefetto di Cipro, non li lasciavano stare tranquilli ed in pace.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;	3 Quelli poi di Joppe commisero questa scelleratezza: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano con loro a salire su delle barche da essi preparate, con le mogli ed i figli, come se con loro non vi fosse inimicizia alcuna.
4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.	4 I Giudei, così invitati per decreto di tutta la città, acconsentirono, non avendo alcun sospetto, e per amor di pace; ma quando furono al largo, quelli ne annegarono non meno di duecento.
5 When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men	5 Quando Giuda seppe di questa crudeltà fatta ad uomini della sua nazione, dette gli ordini a' suoi soldati, e, invocato Dio giusto giudice,
6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 piombò sugli uccisori de' suoi fratelli, e di notte mise fuoco al forte, incendiò le barche, e finì con la spada quelli che sfuggirono all'incendio.
7 As the town gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come back and wipe out the wholecommunity of Joppa.	7 Dopo questo, se ne partì con l’intenzione di tornare di nuovo, e sterminare tutti i Joppiti.
8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Ma avendo saputo che anche quelli di Jamnia macchinavano di far altrettanto con quei Giudei che abitavan fra loro,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 sorprese nella notte anche i Jamnlti, ed incendiò il porto con le navi, sicché il chiarore delle fiamme si vedeva da Gerusalemme, a duecentoquaranta stadii.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 Di lì, incamminatosi contro Timoteo, fatti che ebbe nove stadii, lo assalirono cinquemila fanti e cinquecento cavalieri Arabi.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 Dopo un accanito combattimento ben riuscito con l’aiuto di Dio, i superstiti Arabi vinti chiedevano a Giuda che facesse pace con loro, promettendo di dargli armenti, e di aiutarlo in altra maniera.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Giuda, pertanto, giudicando che potessero davvero essergli utili in molte cose, promise la pace, e quelli, ricevutala, tornarono alle loro tende.
13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Assalì anche una città fortificata, guarnita intorno di ponti, e di mura, abitata da gente di diverse nazioni, chiamata Casfin.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Ma quelli che vi erano dentro, fidandosi della solidità delle mura, e delle provviste di vettovaglie, sì difendevano fiaccamente, ricoprendo Giuda d’Ingiurie, bestemmiando, e dicendo cose da non ripetersi.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 Laonde il Maccabeo, invocato il grande Signore del mondo, che senza arieti e macchine a tempo di Giosuè aveva abbattuto Gerico, irruppe furiosamente contro le mura,
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 e presa per volontà di Dio la città vi fece immensa strage, così che il vicino stagno, largo due stadii, pareva scorrere del sangue degli uccisi
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 Di lì proseguirono per settecentocinquanta stadii, e vennero in Caraca, a que' Giudei che son detti Tubianel.
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 Ma non trovarono in que' luoghi Timoteo, il quale, senza nulla aver concluso, se n’era venuto via, lasciando in un certo luogo una fortissima guarnigione.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 Ora, Dositeo e Sosipatro, capitani al seguito del Maccabeo, uccisero diecimila di quelli lasciati a guardia da Timoteo.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 Ed il Maccabeo, messi in ordine intorno a sè seimila uomini, e divisili in coorti, proseguì incontro a Timoteo che aveva seco centoventimila fanti e duemllacinquecento cavalieri.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Quando seppe della venuta di Giuda, Timoteo mandò avanti le donne, i ragazzi, ed il rimanente bagaglio in una fortezza chiamata Carnion, la quale era inespugnabile e di difficile accesso per la ristrettezza dei passi.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 Ma quando la prima coorte di Giuda si mostrò, i nemici furon presi da spavento per la presenza di Dio che tutto vede, e furon messi in fuga gli uni dagli altri, così che venivan travolti da loro medesimi, e colpiti dalle spade del compagni.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 Giuda poi vigorosamente li inseguiva ; per far punizione di quei pagani, de' quali ne uccise trentamila.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 Lo stesso Timoteo cadde nelle mani di quelli di Dositeo e di Sosipatro, e con molte preghiere si raccomandava d'esser rimandato vivo, perchè aveva in suo potere molti, genitori e fratelli de’ Giudei che alla sua morte verrebbero maltrattati.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 Avendo egli dato fede che li restituirebbe secondo il patto, lo rilasciarono incolume per la salvezza de’ fratelli.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 Giuda poi assalì Camion, uccidendovi ventlcinquemila uomini.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Dopo aver messi in fuga ed uccisi quelli, mosse l’esercito contro Efron, piazza forte, dove abitava una popolazione di genti diverse, e forti giovani a difesa delle mura tenevano testa accanitamente. Ivi anche erano macchine molte, e gran quantità di dardi.
28 But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.	28 Ma [i Giudei], Invocato l’Onnipotente che con la sua potenza spezza le forze de' nemici, presero la città, e, di quelli che v’eran dentro, ne abbatterono ventlcinquemila.
29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Di lì, marciarono sulla città degli Sciti, distante da Gerusalemme seicento stadii.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Ma siccome i Giudei dimoranti in Scitopoli attestavano d’esser stati benignamente trattati da quelli abitanti, i quali, anche nei tempi della calamità si erano condotti con loro con moderazione,
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 li ringraziarono, esortandoli ad esser anche per l’avvenire benevoli alla loro gente; indi vennero a Gerusalemme, essendo vicino il giorno solenne delle Settimane.
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 Fatta la Pentecoste, mossero contro Gorgia condottiere degl’Idumei,
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 il quale s’era avanzato con tremila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 Venuti alle mani, caddero alcuni pochi Giudei;
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 ed un certo Dositeo, cavaliere di quei di Bacenore, uomo valoroso, aveva preso Gorgia, e voleva farlo prigioniero; ma un cavaliere dei Traci gli fu addosso e gli tagliò il braccio, e così Gorgia fuggì in Maresa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Quelli della coorte di Esdrin essendo stanchi dal lungo combattere, Giuda pregò il Signore che si facesse egli aiuto e capo della battaglia,
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 ed intonati degl' inni nella lingua nazionale, e levato un grido, mise in fuga i soldati di Gorgia.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 Messo allora insieme il suo esercito, venne Giuda nella città di Odollam, e sopravvenendo il giorno settimo, ivi si purificarono secondo la legge, e celebrarono il sabato.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 Il giorno di poi venne co’ suoi Giuda, per prendere i corpi degli uccisi, e porli co’ loro padri ne' sepolcri paterni,
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 Ora, sotto le tuniche dei morti trovarono degli oggetti idolatrici, presi già in Janima, proibiti ai Giudei dalla legge. Fu dunque a tutti manifesto che per cagione di questo eran essi caduti.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 Tutti allora benedissero il giusto giudizio del Signore che aveva palesate le cose occulte,
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 e messisi in orazione pregarono perchè il peccato da quelli commesso fosse dimnticato. Ed il fortissimo uomo Giuda esortava il popolo a mantenersi senza peccato, avendo sott'occhio che cos’era accaduto per i peccati di quelli uccisi.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 Fatta poi una colletta, mandò a Gerusalemme dodicimila dramme d’argento, perchè s’ofTrisse un sacrifizio per i peccati di que’ morti, bene e santamente pensando intorno alla resurrezione
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 (poiché, se non avesse sperato che quei caduti risorgerebbero, superfluo e vano parrebbe il pregare pel morti,
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 e perchè giudicava che a quelli i quali piamente avevan ricevuto la morte, sarebbe preparata una grande misericordia.
	46 È dunque santo e salutare il pensiero di pregar pei defunti, acciò siano sciolti da’ loro peccati.
