1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 Ces traités conclus, Lysias revint chez le roi, tandis que les Juifs se remettaient aux travauxdes champs.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Parmi les stratèges en place, Timothée et Apollonius, fils de Gennéos, et aussi Hiéronyme etDémophon, à qui s'ajoutait Nikanor le Cypriarque, ne laissaient goûter aux Juifs ni repos, ni tranquillité.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;	3 Les habitants de Joppé commirent un acte particulièrement impie. Ils invitèrent les Juifsdomiciliés chez eux à monter avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants sur des barques qu'ils avaient préparées eux-mêmes, comme si nulle inimitié n'existait à leur égard.
4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.	4 Sur l'assurance d'un décret rendu par le peuple de la ville, les Juifs acceptèrent comme desgens désireux de la paix et sans défiance, mais quand ils furent au large, on les coula à fond au nombre d'aumoins 200.
5 When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men	5 Dès que Judas eut appris la cruauté commise contre les gens de sa nation, il fit savoir sesordres à ceux qui étaient avec lui,
6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 et, après avoir invoqué Dieu, le juge équitable, il marcha contre les meurtriers de ses frères.De nuit, il incendia le port, brûla les vaisseaux et passa au fil de l'épée ceux qui y avaient cherché un refuge.

8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Averti que ceux de Iamnia voulaient jouer le même tour aux Juifs qui habitaient parmi eux,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 il attaqua de nuit les Iamnites, incendia le port avec la flotte, de telle sorte que les lueurs desflammes furent aperçues jusqu'à Jérusalem quoique distante de 240 stades.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 Il s'était éloigné de là de neuf stades dans une marche contre Timothée, lorsque tombèrentsur lui des Arabes au nombre d'au moins 5.000 hommes de pied et 500 cavaliers.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 Un violent combat s'étant engagé, et les soldats de Judas l'ayant emporté avec l'aide de Dieu,les nomades vaincus demandèrent à Judas de leur donner la main droite, promettant de lui livrer du bétail et delui être utiles en tout le reste.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Comprenant qu'en réalité ils pourraient lui rendre beaucoup de services, Judas consentit àfaire la paix avec eux et, après qu'on se fut donné la main, ils se retirèrent sous la tente.
13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Judas attaqua aussi une certaine ville forte, entourée de remparts, habitée par un mélange denations et dont le nom était Kaspîn.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Confiants dans la puissance de leurs murs et leurs dépôts de vivres, les assiégés semontraient grossiers à l'excès envers Judas et les siens, joignant aux insultes les blasphèmes et des proposimpies.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 Judas et ses compagnons, ayant invoqué le grand Souverain du monde qui sans béliers nimachines de guerre renversa Jéricho au temps de Josué, assaillirent le mur avec férocité.
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 Devenus maîtres de la ville par la volonté de Dieu, ils firent un carnage indescriptible, aupoint que l'étang voisin, large de deux stades, paraissait rempli par le sang qui y avait coulé.
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 Comme ils s'étaient éloignés à 750 stades de là, ils atteignirent le Charax, chez les Juifsappelés Toubiens.
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 Quant à Timothée, ils ne le trouvèrent point dans ces parages, car il avait quitté les lieuxsans avoir rien fait, mais non sans avoir laissé sur un certain point une très forte garnison.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 Dosithée et Sosipater, généraux du Maccabée, s'y rendirent et tuèrent les hommes laissés parTimothée dans la forteresse au nombre de plus de 10.000.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 Maccabée, de son côté, ayant distribué ses troupes en cohortes, nomma ceux qui seraient àleur tête et s'élança contre Timothée, qui avait autour de lui 120.000 fantassins et 2.500 cavaliers.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Informé de l'approche de Judas, Timothée envoya tout d'abord les femmes, les enfants et lereste des bagages au lieu dit le Karnion, car la place était inexpugnable et difficile d'accès à cause des passesétroites de toute la contrée.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 La cohorte de Judas parut la première: l'épouvante s'étant emparée de l'ennemi, ainsi que lacrainte que leur inspirait la manifestation de Celui qui voit tout, ils prirent la fuite en tous sens, de telle sorte quesouvent ils se blessaient entre eux et se transperçaient de leurs propres épées.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 Judas les poursuivit avec une vigueur extrême, embrochant ces criminels dont il fit périrjusqu'à 30.000 hommes.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 Timothée, étant tombé lui-même aux mains des gens de Dosithée et de Sosipater, les conjuraavec beaucoup d'artifice de le laisser aller sain et sauf, affirmant qu'il avait en son pouvoir des parents et mêmedes frères de beaucoup d'entre eux, à qui il pourrait arriver d'être supprimés.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 Quand il les eut persuadés par de longs discours qu'il leur restituerait ces hommes sains etsaufs en vertu de l'engagement qu'il prenait, ils le relâchèrent pour sauver leurs frères.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 S'étant rendu au Karnion et à l'Atargatéion, Judas égorgea 25.000 hommes.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Après leur désastre (et leur perte), il conduisit son armée contre Ephrôn, ville forte oùhabitait Lysanias. 29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Partis de là, ils foncèrent sur Scythopolis, à 600 stades de Jérusalem.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Mais les Juifs qui s'y étaient fixés, ayant attesté que les Scythopolites avaient eu pour eux dela bienveillance et leur avaient réservé un accueil humain au temps du malheur,
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 Judas et les siens remercièrent ces derniers et les engagèrent à se montrer encore à l'avenirbien disposés pour leur race. Ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem très peu avant la fête des Semaines.
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 Après la fête appelée Pentecôte, ils foncèrent contre Gorgias, stratège de l'Idumée.
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 Celui-ci sortit à la tête de 3.000 fantassins et 400 cavaliers,
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 qui engagèrent une bataille rangée où il arriva qu'un certain nombre de Juifs succombèrent.
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 Le dénommé Dosithée, cavalier du corps des Toubiens, homme vaillant, se rendit maître dela personne de Gorgias et, l'ayant saisi par la chlamyde, il l'entraînait de force en vue de capturer vivant cemaudit, mais un cavalier thrace, se jetant sur Dosithée, lui trancha l'épaule, et Gorgias s'enfuit à Marisa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Cependant ceux qui se trouvaient avec Esdrias combattaient depuis longtemps et tombaientd'épuisement. Judas supplia le Seigneur de se montrer leur allié et leur guide dans le combat.
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 Entonnant ensuite à pleine voix dans la langue des pères le cri de guerre avec des hymnes, ilmit en déroute les gens de Gorgias.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 Judas, ayant ensuite rallié son armée, se rendit à la ville d'Odollam et, le septième jour de lasemaine survenant, ils se purifièrent selon la coutume et célébrèrent le sabbat en ce lieu.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 Le jour suivant, on vint trouver Judas (au temps où la nécessité s'en imposait) pour releverles corps de ceux qui avaient succombé et les inhumer avec leurs proches dans le tombeau de leurs pères.
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 Or ils trouvèrent sous la tunique de chacun des morts des objets consacrés aux idoles deIamnia et que la Loi interdit aux Juifs. Il fut donc évident pour tous que cela avait été la cause de leur mort.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 Tous donc, ayant béni la conduite du Seigneur, juge équitable qui rend manifestes les chosescachées,
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 se mirent en prière pour demander que le péché commis fût entièrement pardonné, puis levaleureux Judas exhorta la troupe à se garder pure de tout péché, ayant sous les yeux ce qui était arrivé à causede la faute de ceux qui étaient tombés.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 Puis, ayant fait une collecte d'environ 2.000 drachmes, il l'envoya à Jérusalem afin qu'onoffrît un sacrifice pour le péché, agissant fort bien et noblement d'après le concept de la résurrection.
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 Car, s'il n'avait pas espéré que les soldats tombés dussent ressusciter, il était superflu et sotde prier pour les morts,
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 et s'il envisageait qu'une très belle récompense est réservée à ceux qui s'endorment dans lapiété, c'était là une pensée sainte et pieuse. Voilà pourquoi il fit faire ce sacrifice expiatoire pour les morts, afinqu'ils fussent délivrés de leur péché.
