1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 Conclusi questi accordi, Lisia se ne tornò presso il re, mentre i Giudei ripresero il lavoro dei campi.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Ma tra i comandanti locali, Timoteo e Apollonio, figlio di Gennèo, nonché Girolamo e Demofonte e, oltre a questi, Nicànore, comandante dei Ciprioti, non li lasciavano vivere tranquilli né stare in pace.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. 4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. 6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 e, invocato Dio, giusto giudice, marciò contro gli uccisori dei suoi fratelli; incendiò di notte il porto, bruciò le barche e passò a fil di spada quanti vi si erano rifugiati.

8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Intanto, avendo appreso che anche quelli di Iamnia volevano fare la stessa cosa ai Giudei che abitavano con loro,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 piombò di notte anche sugli Iamniti e incendiò il porto con la flotta, in modo tale che i riflessi dello splendore apparivano fino a Gerusalemme, distante duecentoquaranta stadi.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 Allontanatisi di lì nove stadi, mentre marciavano contro Timoteo, non meno di cinquemila Arabi con cinquecento cavalieri si lanciarono su di lui.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 Vi fu una violenta battaglia, ma gli uomini di Giuda, grazie all'aiuto di Dio, ebbero la meglio e perciò i nomadi battuti supplicarono Giuda di dar loro la destra in segno di pace, promettendo di donargli del bestiame e di essergli utili in altre cose.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 Giuda, comprendendo che davvero gli sarebbero stati utili in molte cose, accondiscese a fare la pace con essi. 13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Giuda assalì anche una città, fortificata con argini e circondata da mura, che era abitata da gente di ogni genere e aveva nome Casfin.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Quelli che erano dentro, fidando nella robustezza delle mura e nella provvista di viveri, insultavano in modo triviale gli uomini di Giuda, schernendoli, bestemmiando e dicendo cose sconvenienti.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 Gli uomini di Giuda, allora, invocato il grande Dominatore del mondo, che senza arieti e macchine da guerra fece crollare Gerico al tempo di Giosuè, assalirono furiosamente il muro.
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 Divenuti, per volontà di Dio, padroni della città, vi fecero una strage indescrivibile, sicché il lago vicino, che ha la larghezza di due stadi, pareva scorrere ripieno di sangue.
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 Allontanatisi poi di lì settecentocinquanta stadi, raggiunsero Caraca, presso i Giudei chiamati Tubiani.
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 Ma in quei luoghi non trovarono Timoteo, il quale, senza avervi fatto alcunché, se ne era allontanato, dopo aver lasciato in un certo posto una guarnigione, ben equipaggiata.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 Allora Dositeo e Sosipatro, che erano tra i comandanti degli uomini del Maccabeo, fecero una sortita e annientarono gli uomini lasciati da Timoteo nella fortezza, che erano più di diecimila.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 Il Maccabeo, a sua volta, disposto il suo esercito in schiere, pose costoro a capo delle schiere e si lanciò su Timoteo, che aveva con sé centoventimila fanti e duemilacinquecento cavalieri.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Informato dell'avanzata di Giuda, Timoteo mandò avanti le donne, i bambini e ogni altro bagaglio verso la località detta Carnion. Era, infatti, un posto inespugnabile e di difficile accesso, a causa della strettezza di tutti i suoi passaggi.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 Apparsa la prima schiera di Giuda e caduto lo spavento sui nemici, a causa anche del timore suscitato dalla sopravvenuta apparizione di colui che tutto vede, quelli incominciarono a fuggire, condotti chi da una parte e chi dall'altra, al punto che spesso venivano travolti dai propri compagni e trafitti dalle punte delle loro spade.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 Giuda allora ne fece un vigoroso inseguimento, trafiggendo questi scellerati e uccidendone circa trentamila.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 Timoteo stesso, caduto nelle mani degli uomini di Dositeo e Sosipatro, chiedeva con molta astuzia di essere rilasciato sano e salvo, poiché di molti deteneva i genitori e di altri i fratelli, ai quali altrimenti sarebbe successo di essere tenuti in nessun conto.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 Quando perciò egli si fu ripetutamente impegnato al patto che avrebbe restituito quegli uomini incolumi, lo lasciarono libero in considerazione della salvezza dei propri fratelli.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 Quindi Giuda, assalito Carnion e l'Atargatèo, uccise venticinquemila persone.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Dopo la disfatta e distruzione di questi, marciò anche contro Efron, città fortificata, nella quale abitava Lisia con una moltitudine di ogni genere. Giovani robusti, disposti davanti alle mura, combattevano vigorosamente, mentre all'interno vi era una grande provvista di macchine e di proiettili.
28 But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.	28 Ma, invocato il sovrano che con potenza abbatte le forze dei nemici, presero la città nelle loro mani e di quelli che vi erano dentro ne abbatterono venticinquemila.
29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Partiti di lì, mossero alla volta di Beisan, città che è a seicento stadi da Gerusalemme.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Ma i Giudei che ivi risiedevano resero testimonianza della benevolenza che gli abitanti di Beisan avevano avuto verso di essi e dell'accoglienza cortese riservata loro anche in tempi di sventura,
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 e questi li ringraziarono e, esortatili ad essere benigni anche in avvenire verso la loro stirpe, raggiunsero Gerusalemme, essendo ormai vicina la festa delle Settimane.
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 Dopo la festa detta di Pentecoste, mossero contro Gorgia, stratega dell'Idumea.
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 Questi uscì in campo con tremila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 Schieratisi in battaglia, caddero alcuni tra i Giudei.
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 Un certo Dositeo, valoroso cavaliere dei Tubiani, aveva afferrato Gorgia e tenendolo per la clamide lo conduceva a forza col proposito di catturare vivo quel maledetto. Ma uno dei cavalieri traci gli si lanciò contro e gli mozzò il braccio. Così Gorgia se ne fuggì verso Marisa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Poiché gli uomini di Esdrin combattevano da tempo ed erano affaticati, Giuda invocò il Signore a mostrarsi loro alleato e guida nel combattimento.
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 Quindi, intonato nella lingua paterna il grido di guerra per mezzo di inni, improvvisamente assalì gli uomini di Gorgia e li costrinse alla fuga.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 Giuda poi, radunato l'esercito, raggiunse la città di Odollam. Sopraggiunto il settimo giorno, si purificarono secondo l'uso e vi trascorsero il sabato.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 Il giorno seguente gli uomini di Giuda, quando ormai la necessità lo esigeva, andarono a raccogliere i corpi dei caduti per deporli insieme ai parenti nei sepolcri dei loro padri.
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 Trovarono però, sotto le tuniche di ciascuno dei morti, oggetti sacri agli idoli di Iamnia, che la legge interdice ai Giudei. Così fu a tutti palese per quale causa costoro erano morti.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 Tutti, perciò, dopo aver benedetto il Signore, giusto giudice, che rende manifeste le cose occulte,
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 si diedero a fare una supplica, chiedendo che il peccato commesso fosse completamente cancellato. Il nobile Giuda allora esortò la sua gente a conservarsi senza peccati, poiché avevano visto coi propri occhi quanto era avvenuto a causa del peccato dei caduti.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 Quindi, fatta una colletta a tanto per uomo, inviò a Gerusalemme circa duemila dramme d'argento per far offrire un sacrificio per il peccato, agendo così molto bene e nobilmente, nel pensiero della risurrezione.
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 Infatti se egli non avesse sperato che i caduti risorgeranno, sarebbe stato superfluo e sciocco pregare per i morti.
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 Ma se egli pensava alla magnifica ricompensa riservata a quelli che si addormentano nella loro pietà, il suo pensiero era santo e pio. Per questo egli fece compiere il sacrificio di espiazione per quelli che erano morti, affinché fossero assolti dal peccato.
