1 These agreements once concluded, Lysias returned to the king and the Jews went back to theirfarming.	1 Dopo pattuite quelle cose Lisia: se ne tornò a trovare il re; e i Giudei si diedero a coltivare le loro terre.
2 Among the local generals, Timotheus and Apol onius son of Gennaeus, as also Hieronymus andDemophon, and Nicanor the Cypriarch as wel , would not allow the Jews to live in peace and quiet.	2 Ma quelli che eran rimasi nel paese, Timoteo, e Apollonio figliuolo di Genneo, e anche Girolamo, e Demofonte, e oltre a questi Nicanore governatore di Cipro non li lasciavano ben avere, nè viver tranquilli.
3 The people of Joppa committed a particularly wicked crime: they invited the Jews living among themto go aboard some boats they had lying ready, taking their wives and children. There was no hint of any intentionto harm them;	3 Quelli poi di Joppe giunsero a commettere questa barbarie: invitarono i Giudei abitanti in quella città ad entrare nelle barche da lor preparate, non essendovi tra gli uni, e gli altri nissuna nimicizia.
4 there had been a public vote by the citizens, and the Jews accepted, as wel they might, beingpeaceable people with no reason to suspect anything. But once out in the open sea they were al sent to thebottom, a company of at least two hundred.	4 E questi avendo a ciò condiscesa senza sospetto alcuno di male per ragion della pace, e della pubblica convenzione fatta colla città, allorché si trovarono in alto mare furono annegati non meno di dugento.
5 When Judas heard of the cruel fate of his countrymen, he issued his orders to his men	5 La qual crudeltà esercitata contro quei suoi nazionali appena giunse a notizia di Giuda, mise in ordine la sua gente, e invocato Dio giusto giudice,
6 and after invoking God, the just judge, he attacked his brothers' murderers. Under cover of dark heset fire to the port, burned the boats and put to the sword everyone who had taken refuge there.	6 Andò a punire gli uccisori de' fratelli, e di notte tempo mise a fuoco, e fiamma il porto, e abbrugiò le barche, e trucidò quelli, che erano scampati dal fuoco.
7 As the town gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come back and wipe out the wholecommunity of Joppa.	7 E fatto questo parti per poi ritornarvi, e sterminare tutti i cittadini di Joppe.
8 But hearing that the people of Jamnia were planning to treat their resident Jews in the same way,	8 Ma avendo saputo, che anche quelli di Jamnia meditavano di trattare in simil guisa i Giudei che abitavano tra di loro,
9 he made a night attack on the Jamnites and fired the port with its fleet; the glow of the flames wasseen as far off as Jerusalem, thirty miles away.	9 Sopraggiunse anche a Jamnia di notte tempo, e diede fuoco al porto, e alle navi, onde il chiaror delle fiamme si vedeva a Gerusalemme in distanza di dugento quaranta stadj.
10 When they had left the town barely a mile behind them in their advance on Timotheus, Judas wasattacked by an Arab force of at least five thousand foot soldiers, with five hundred cavalry.	10 E partito che fu di là, e avendo camminato dieci stadj, e avanzandosi contro Timoteo, fu egli assalito dagli Arabi in numero di cinque mila fanti, e di cinque cento cavalli.
11 A fierce engagement fol owed, and with God's help Judas' men won the day; the defeated nomadsbegged Judas to offer them the right hand of friendship, and promised to surrender their herds and makethemselves general y useful to him.	11 E dopo un aspro combattimento, il quale coll'aiuto di Dio ebbe felice esito per lui, quelli che restavano dell'esercito vinto degli Arabi, chieser la pace a Giuda, promettendo di cedergli dei pascoli, e di giovargli in ogni altra cosa.
12 Realising that they might indeed prove valuable in many ways, Judas consented to make peace withthem and after an exchange of pledges the Arabs withdrew to their tents.	12 E Giuda credendo che veramente poteano essergli utili in molte cose, promise la pace; e fatto l'accordo se n'andaron quegli alle loro tende.
13 Judas also attacked a certain fortified town, closed by ramparts and inhabited by a medley of races;its name was Caspin.	13 Indi egli diede l'assalto ad una città forte, chiusa intorno di ponti, e di mura, abitata da una turba di varie nazioni, la quale chiamavasi Casphin.
14 Confident in the strength of their wal s and their stock of provisions, the besieged adopted aninsolent attitude to Judas and his men, reinforcing their insults with blasphemies and profanity.	14 Ma quelli di dentro affidati sulla saldezza della mura, e avendo provvisione di viveri, non se ne mettevano in pena, e provocavano Giuda colle villanie, e colle bestemmie, e con parole da non ridirsi.
15 But Judas and his men invoked the great Sovereign of the world who without battering-ram or siege-engine had overthrown Jericho in the days of Joshua; they then made a fierce assault on the wall.	15 Ma Maccabeo, invocato il gran Re dell'Universo, il quale senza arieti, né macchine atterrò Gerico a tempo di Giosuè, sali furiosamente sopra le mura:
16 By God's wil , having captured the town, they made such indescribable slaughter that the nearbylake, a quarter of a mile across, seemed fil ed to overflowing with blood.	16 E presa per divino volere la città, vi fece immensa strage, talmente che il lago adiacente largo due stadj appariva tinto del sangue degli uccisi.
17 Ninety-five miles further on from there, they reached the Charax, in the country of Jews known asTubians.	17 E partiti di là dopo un viaggio di settecento cinquanta stadj giunsero a Characa presso que' Giudei, che sono detti Tubianei:
18 They did not find Timotheus himself in that neighbourhood; he had already left the district, havingachieved nothing apart from leaving a very strong garrison at one point.	18 Ma non trovaron ivi Timoteo, il quale senza aver fatto nulla tornò indietro, lasciando in un dato luogo una guarnigione assai forte.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, two of the Maccabaean generals, marched out and destroyed the forceTimotheus had left behind in the fortress, amounting to more than ten thousand men.	19 E Dositeo, e Sosipatro, che erano capitani de' soldati insieme con Maccabeo, uccisero dieci mila uomini lasciati da Timoteo in quella fortezza.
20 Maccabaeus himself divided his army into cohorts to which he assigned commanders, and thenhurried in pursuit of Timotheus, whose troops numbered one hundred and twenty thousand infantry and twothousand five hundred cavalry.	20 E Maccabeo riuniti seco sei mila uomini, e divisigli in coorti si avanzò contro Timoteo, che avea seco cento venti mila fanti, e due mila cinque cento cavalli.
21 Timotheus' first move on learning of Judas' advance was to send away the women and children andthe rest of the baggage train to the place called the Carnaim, since it was an impregnable position, difficult ofaccess owing to the narrowness of al the approaches.	21 Ma Timoteo avendo saputo l'arrivo di Giuda, mandò innanzi le donne, e i ragazzi, e tutto il bagaglio in una fortezza chiamata Charnion; perocché questa era inespugnabile, e di difficile accesso a causa delle strettezze dei luoghi.
22 Judas' cohort came into sight first. The enemy, seized with fright and panic-stricken by themanifestation of the Al -seeing, began to flee, one running this way, one running that, often wounding oneanother in consequence and running on the points of one another's swords.	22 Ma all'apparire della prima coorte di Giuda la paura entrò addosso a' nemici a causa della presenza di Dio, che vede il tutto, e furono messi in fuga gli uni dagli altri, talmente che il maggior danno lo ricevevan dalla loro gente, e restavan feriti dalle spade de' suoi.
23 Judas pursued them with a wil , cutting the sinners to pieces and kil ing something like thirtythousand men.	23 E Giuda vigorosamente gl'inseguiva gastigando que' profani, e ne uccise trenta mila.
24 Timotheus himself, having fal en into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men, verycraftily pleaded with them to let him go with his life, on the grounds that he had the relatives and even thebrothers of many of them in his power, and that these could otherwise expect short shrift.	24 E lo stesso Timoteo si imbattè nelle schiere guidate da Dositeo, e da Sosipatro, e istantemente si raccomandava che gli salvasser la vita, perocché aveva in suo potere molti o parenti, o fratelli de' Giudei, i quali, morto lui, avverrebbe che resterebbero senza speranza.
25 When at long last he convinced them that he would honour his promise and return these people safeand sound, they let him go for the sake of saving their brothers.	25 E data parola di restituirli seconda la convenzione fatta, fu lasciato andarsene sano, e salvo par salvare i fratelli.
26 Reaching the Carnaim and the Atargateion, Judas slaughtered twenty-five thousand men.	26 E Giuda si mosse contro Carnion, e vi uccise venticinque mila uomini.
27 Having defeated and destroyed them, he led his army against Ephron, a fortified town, whereLysanias was living. Stalwart young men drawn up outside the walls offered vigorous resistance, while insidethere were quantities of war-engines and missiles in reserve.	27 Dopo la sconfitta, e la strage di quelli andò contro Ephron, città forte abitata da una turba di diverse nazioni, e la gioventù robusta stando a difesa, delle muraglie faceano gran resistenza, e vi erano molte macchine, e gran provvisione di armi.
28 But the Jews, having invoked the Sovereign who by his power shatters enemies' defences, gainedcontrol of the town and cut down nearly twenty-five thousand of the people inside.	28 Ma i Giudei, invocato l'Onnipotente, il quale con sua possanza abbatte le forze de' nemici, espugnarono la città, e stesero al suolo venticinque mila uomini di quelli che v'eran dentro.
29 Moving off from there, they pressed on to Scythopolis,	29 Indi andarono alla città degli Sciti, distante secento stadj da Gerusalemme.
30 seventy-five miles from Jerusalem. But as the Jews who had settled there assured Judas that thepeople of Scythopolis had always treated them wel and had been particularly kind to them when times were attheir worst,	30 Ma protestando i Giudei, che dimoravano tragli Scitopolitani, come essi erano trattati da quelli benignamente, e anche nei tempi della calamità, aveano trovata presso di loro molta umanità,
31 he and his men thanked them and urged them to extend the same friendship to his race in the future.They reached Jerusalem shortly before the feast of Weeks.	31 I Giudei rendettero grazie a quelli, è gli esortarono a continuare nel loro buon animo verso la loro nazione: e partiron per Gerusalemme, essendo imminente il di solenne delle settimane.
32 After Pentecost, as it is cal ed, they marched against Gorgias, the general commanding Idumaea.	32 E dopo la Pentecoste si mossero contro Gorgia governatore dell'Idumea.
33 He came out at the head of three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry;	33 E si mossero in viaggio in numero di tre mila fanti, e quattrocento cavalli.
34 in the course of the ensuing battle a few Jews lost their lives.	34 E attaccata la zuffa alcuni pochi Giudei rimasero uccisi.
35 A man called Dositheus, a horseman of the Tubian contingent, a valiant man, overpowered Gorgiasand, gripping him by the cloak, was forcibly dragging him along, intending to take the accursed man alive, butone of the Thracian cavalry, hurling himself on Dositheus, slashed his shoulder, and Gorgias escaped to Marisa.	35 Ma un certo Dositheo soldato a cavallo di quei di Bacenore, uomo valoroso, avea messe le mani addosso a Gorgia; ma volendo egli prenderlo vivo, un soldato a cavallo, Trace di nazione, andò sopra di lui, e gli tagliò la spalla; e in tal modo Gorgia si fuggì a Maresa.
36 Meanwhile, since Esdrias and his men had been fighting for a long time and were exhausted, Judascal ed on the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in battle.	36 Ma combattendo per lunga pezza di tempo i soldati che eran sotto il comando di Esdrin, ed essendo già stanchi, Giuda invocò il Signore, affinchè egli fosse lor protettore, e condottiere nella battaglia:
37 Then, chanting the battle cry and hymns at the top of his voice in his ancestral tongue, by a surpriseattack he routed Gorgias' troops.	37 E avendo cominciato a cantare ad alta voce degli inni nel linguaggio natìo messe in fuga i soldati di Gorgia.
38 Judas then ral ied his army and moved on to the town of Adul am where, as it was the seventh day ofthe week, they purified themselves according to custom and kept the Sabbath.	38 E Giuda, riunito l'esercito, giunse alla città di Odollam, e venuto il settimo giorno purificatisi secondo il rito, celebrarono il sabato in quel medesimo luogo.
39 Next day, they came to find Judas (since the necessity was by now urgent) to have the bodies of thefal en taken up and laid to rest among their relatives in their ancestral tombs.	39 E il dì seguente Giuda andò colla sua gente a prendere i corpi degli uccisi per riporli co' loro parenti nei sepolcri de' loro nazionali.
40 But when they found on each of the dead men, under their tunics, objects dedicated to the idols ofJamnia, which the Law prohibits to Jews, it became clear to everyone that this was why these men had lost theirlives.	40 E in seno degli uccisi trovarono delle cose donate agli idoli, che erano già in Jamnia, le quali sono cose proibite pe' Giudei secondo la legge; e tutti conobbero evidentemente, che per questo quegli eran periti.
41 Al then blessed the ways of the Lord, the upright judge who brings hidden things to light,	41 E tutti benedissero i giusti giudizi del Signore, il quale avea manifestato il male nascosto.
42 and gave themselves to prayer, begging that the sin committed might be completely forgiven. Next,the valiant Judas urged the soldiers to keep themselves free from al sin, having seen with their own eyes theeffects of the sin of those who had fal en;	42 E perciò rivoltisi all'orazione, pregarono, che fosse posto in dimenticanza il delitto commesso. Ma il fortissimo Giuda esortava il popolo a conservarsi senza peccato, mentre avean veduto co' proprj occhi quel che era avvenuto a causa del peccato di quelli, che rimasero uccisi.
43 after this he took a col ection from them individual y, amounting to nearly two thousand drachmas,and sent it to Jerusalem to have a sacrifice for sin offered, an action altogether fine and noble, prompted by hisbelief in the resurrection.	43 E fatta una colletta mandò a Gerusalemme dodici mila dramme d'argento, perchè si offerisse sagrifizio pei peccati di quei defunti, rettamente, e piamente pensando intorno alla risurrezione,
44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to prayfor the dead,	44 (Perocché s'ei non avesse avuto speranza, che que' defunti avessero a risuscitare, superflua cosa, e inutile sarebbe paruta a lui l'orazione pei morti),
45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, thethought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might bereleased from their sin.	45 E considerando, che per quelli si erano addormentati nella pietà, serbavasi una grande misericordia.
	46 Santo adunque, e salutare è il pensiero di pregare pei defunti, affinchè siano sciolti da' loro peccati.
