1 Maccabees 3

1 His son, Judas, known as Maccabaeus, then took his place.	1 Poi si levò per lui il suo figliuolo Giuda, che era chiamato Maccabeo.
2 Al his brothers, and al who had attached themselves to his father, supported him, and they fought forIsrael with a wil .	2 E lui aiutavano tutti li suoi fratelli, e tutti quelli che s'erano accostati al suo padre, e combattevano in battaglia per lo popolo d' Israel allegramente.
3 He extended the fame of his people. Like a giant, he put on the breastplate and buckled on his warharness; he engaged in battle after battle, protecting the ranks with his sword.	3 Ed egli amplificòe gloria alla sua gente, vestissi di lorica (cioè di panziera) a guisa d'uno gigante, e armossi delle sue battaglieresche armi; e (in battaglia egli) difendeva il suo esercito colla sua spada.
4 He was like a lion in his exploits, like a young lion roaring over its prey.	4 Egli fu simigliante allo leone nelle sue operazioni, e fue sì come il giovane lioncello nella caccia.
5 He pursued and tracked down the renegades, he consigned those who troubled his people to theflames.	5 Egli perseguitòe li malvagi, perseguitando loro aspramente; e mise a fuoco e a fiamma quegli che ingiuriavano il popolo suo.
6 The renegades quailed with the terror he inspired, all evil-doers were utterly confounded, anddeliverance went forward under his leadership.	6 E per la paura sua furono iscacciati li suoi nimici, e tutti (li malifattori e) li operatori di iniquità per lui furono ispaventati; e nelle sue mani si dirizzò la salute (della sua gente).
7 He brought bitterness to many a king and rejoicing to Jacob by his deeds, his memory is blessed forever and ever.	7 E molto faceva isgomentare i regni (de' suoi nemici), e (per questo) faceva lieto (il lignaggio di) Iacob nelle sue gloriose opere; sì che in secolo è la sua memoria in benedizione.
8 He went through the towns of Judah eliminating the irreligious from them, and diverted the Retributionfrom Israel.	8 Adunque (Giuda) ricercava le cittadi de'Giudei; e distrusse la mala gente per tutto il paese, e cacciò l'ira del popolo d' Israel.
9 His name resounded to the ends of the earth, he rallied those who were on the point of perishing.	9 E la sua fama si sparse infino agli ultimi confini della terra; e radunòe i fuggitivi e gli scacciati.
10 Next, Apollonius mustered the gentiles and a large force from Samaria to make war on Israel.	10 Allora Apollonio (intendendo la magnificenza di Giuda) radunòe gente di Samaria, e grande potenza e assai combattitori, per fare battaglia col popolo d'Israel.
11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him and routed and kil ed him. Many fell wounded, andthe survivors took to flight.	11 E quando Giuda il seppe, sì gli uscì incontro, e sconfisselo e ucciselo; e molti della sua gente ne furono feriti e abbattuti, e gli altri fuggirono.
12 Their spoils were seized and the sword of Apollonius was taken by Judas, who used it to fight withthroughout his life.	12 E presono le loro spoglie; e la spada di Apollonio la guadagnò Giuda, e poi sempre la usava nelle sue battaglie.
13 On hearing that Judas had raised a mixed force of believers and seasoned fighters,	13 Ma quando Seron, principe dell' oste di Siria, intese come Giuda (vittorioso) avea radunato gente e tutta la congregazione de' fedeli,
14 Seron, commander of the Syrian troops, said, 'I shall make a name for myself and gain honour in thekingdom if I fight Judas and those supporters of his who are so contemptuous of the king's orders.'	14 e' disse ch' egli acquisterebbe a sè grande nome, dicendo: io sarò glorioso nello reame, e sconfiggerò Giuda e tutti quelli che lui sèguitano, sì come dispregiatori del comandamento del re.
15 He therefore launched another expedition, with a strong army of unbelievers to support him in takingrevenge on the Israelites.	15 E allora s' apparecchiò collo suo oste; e con lui vennono uomini malvagi, e forti e battagliereschi, per fare vendetta de' figliuoli d' Israel.
16 He had nearly reached the descent of Beth-Horon when Judas went out to confront him with a handfulof men.	16 E così s' appressarono insino a Betoron; e Giuda uscì loro incontro con poca gente.
17 But as soon as these saw the force advancing to meet them, they said to Judas, 'How can we, few aswe are, engage such overwhelming numbers? We are exhausted as it is, not having had anything to eat today.'	17 E quando la gente di Giuda viddono loro venire adosso lo grande oste, dissono a Giuda: or come potremo noi, così pochi, combattere contro a tanta moltitudine, così forte? Noi siamo ancora molto affaticati per lo digiuno d' oggi.
18 'It is easy', Judas answered, 'for a great number to be defeated by a few; indeed, in the sight ofHeaven, deliverance, whether by many or by few, is al one;	18 Rispose loro Giuda: agevole cosa è che li molti sieno vinti da' pochi; imperò che non è differenza, nel conspetto di Dio del cielo, di liberare e' suoi da molti, o da quelli che sieno pochi.
19 for victory in war does not depend on the size of the fighting force: Heaven accords the strength.	19 Certo la vittoria della battaglia non è nella moltitudine dell' oste, ma la fortezza viene dal cielo.
20 They are coming against us in ful -blown insolence and lawlessness to destroy us, our wives and ourchildren, and to plunder us;	20 Loro vengono a noi con superbia e con rigogliosa moltitudine, per disertarci insieme colle nostre donne e con le nostre famiglie e figliuoli, per tòrre il nostro.
21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws,	21 Ma noi combattiamo per le nostre persone difendere, e per mantenere le nostre leggi.
22 and he will crush them before our eyes; do not be afraid of them.'	22 E (però siate d' auimi forti, chè) Iddio gli attriterà dinanzi dalla nostra faccia; imperò non dubitate niente di loro.
23 When he had finished speaking, he made a sudden sal y against Seron and his force andoverwhelmed them.	23 E fatto fine alle sue parole, subitamente gli assalì; e (incontanente) fue isconfitto Seron e tutta la sua oste.
24 Judas pursued them down from Beth-Horon as far as the plain. About eight hundred of their men fel ,and the rest took refuge in the country of the Philistines.	24 E Giuda il perseguitòe insino alla scesa di Betoron per sino quando si viene in campo, (e morti ne furono assai), e caddono de' nemici ottocento; e gli altri uomini sì fuggirono nelle terre de' Filistei.
25 Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and alarm seized the surrounding peoples.	25 Allora si isparse il pauroso nome di Giuda e de' suoi fratelli sopra tutte le genti delle terre (vicine e) dintorno.
26 His name even reached the king's ears, and among the nations there was talk of Judas and hisbattles.	26 E la sua fama pervenne allo re (Antioco), e tutte le genti incominciarono a ragionare delle sue battaglie.
27 The news of these events infuriated Antiochus, and he ordered mobilisation of al the forces in hiskingdom, a very powerful army.	27 E (veramente) quando lo re Antioco udì queste novelle, molto s' adirò nell' animo suo; e mandò a radunare tutta l'oste del suo reame di gente forte a combattere.
28 Opening his treasury, he distributed a year's pay to his troops, telling them to be prepared for anyeventuality.	28 E aperse la camera del suo tesoro, e diede all' oste suo soldo per uno anno; e comandò loro che fussono apparecchiati d' ogni cosa (che si richiedeva. ad oste).
29 He then found that the money in his coffers had run short and that the tribute of the province haddecreased, as a result of the dissension and disaster brought on the country by his own abrogation of laws thathad been in force from antiquity.	29 Ma (avvenne ch' egli) s' avvidde che la pecunia gli era mancata de' suoi tesori, e che gli tributi delle regioni erano rari per le discordie, e per le divisioni e per le gravezze che loro aveano avute pagando le legittime, per le usanze ch' erano state fatte per li antichi tempi.
30 He began to fear that, as had happened more than once, he would not have enough to cover theexpenses and the lavish bounties he had previously been accustomed to make on a larger scale than hispredecessors on the throne.	30 Di che dubitòe (lo re Antioco), che non gli mancasse la pecunia per le grandi spese, e per fare i ricchi doni i quali per addietro avea usati con larga mano; conciosia cosa che n' era stato divizioso sopra gli altri re ch' erano stati innanzi a lui.
31 In this grave quandary he resolved to invade Persia, there to levy tribute on the provinces and soaccumulate substantial funds.	31 E per questa cagione era molto invilito nell'animo suo; donde egli pensò d'andare in Persia, e di ricevere li tributi delle contrade, e di radunare molto argento.
32 He therefore left Lysias, a nobleman and member of the royal family, to manage the royal affairsbetween the River Euphrates and the Egyptian frontier,	32 E lasciò sopra i fatti del reame Lisia, uomo nobile della schiatta regale, facendo lui signore dal fiume di Eufrate insino al fiume d' Egitto.
33 making him responsible for the education of his son Antiochus, until he should come back.	33 E raccomandògli Antioco suo figliuolo, che lo allevasse insino alla sua ritornata.
34 To him Antiochus made over half his forces, with the elephants, giving him instructions about what hewanted done, particularly with regard to the inhabitants of Judaea and Jerusalem,	34 E diedegli la metà dell' oste sua, e diedegli elefanti; e imposegli di ciò ch' egli voleva facesse; e degli abitanti di Giudea e di Gerusalemme,
35 against whom he was to send a force, to crush and destroy the power of Israel and the remnant ofJerusalem, to wipe out their very memory from the place,	35 ch' egli mandasse contro a loro oste, e distruggesse e disertasse il popolo della terra d' Israel, e ispergesse l'avanzo di Ierusalem; e la loro memoria tòrre dal detto luogo,
36 to settle foreigners in al parts of their territory and to distribute their land into lots.	36 e spogliare la contrada de' suoi figliuoli, e mettervi gente nuova e istrana, che abitassono per tutti i loro confini; e che per sorte dividesse la loro terra.
37 The king took the remaining half of his troops with him and set out from Antioch, the capital of hiskingdom, in the year 147; he crossed the River Euphrates and made his way through the Upper Provinces.	37 E allora si partì lo re (Antioco) con parte dell' avanzo della sua oste, movendosi di Antiochia, la città del suo regno, nell' anno CXLVII (del regno de' Greci); e passando il fiume di Eufrate, camminando ricercòe la regione di sopra.
38 Lysias chose Ptolemy son of Dorymenes, with Nicanor and Gorgias, influential men from among theFriends of the King,	38 E (intanto) Lisia elesse suoi principi, che l'uno fu Tolomeo figliuolo di Dorimino, e Nicanore e Gorgia, uomini potenti e amici del re.
39 and, under their command, despatched forty thousand foot and seven thousand horse to invade theland of Judah and devastate it, as the king had ordered.	39 E mandògli in Giudea con XL milia uomini pedoni, e VII milia cavalieri, acciò che distruggessono il paese (e la gente che vi abitava) secondo il comandamento del re.
40 The entire force set out and reached the neighbourhood of Emmaus in the lowlands, where theypitched camp.	40 E così si misono in cammino con tutta la loro potenza, e capitarono nella cittade di Emmaum nella pianura.
41 The local merchants, hearing the news of this, arrived at the camp, bringing with them a large amountof gold and silver, and fetters as wel , proposing to buy the Israelites as slaves; they were accompanied by acompany from Idumaea and the Philistine country.	41 E quando i mercatanti della contrada udirono la grande nominanza delli detti principi (e del loro grande oste), sì vennono nel campo con molto oro e ariento, con molti servi, comperare de' figliuoli d' Israel per ischiavi (e per servi); ancora l'oste di Siria e d'altre genti strane si radunarono con loro.
42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation was going from bad to worse and that armies werecamping in their territory; they were also well aware that the king had ordered the people's total destruction.	42 E Giuda (Maccabeo) e li suoi fratelli (savi) avvedendosi che li mali erano multiplicati (sopra la terra), e che l'oste era accampata nelli confini della loro terra, seppono come lo re (Antioco) avea comandato che la gente Giudea fosse consumata e morta.
43 So they said to each other, 'Let us restore the ruins of our people and fight for our people and oursanctuary.'	43 Allora (radunò la sua gente a parlamento loro) Giuda e loro con grande concordia si dispuosono di volere battagliare, dicendo; combattiamo, e non lasciamo abbattere la nostra franchigia; prendiamo l'arme per lo popolo nostro, e per gli nostri santi.
44 The Assembly was summoned, to prepare for war, to offer prayer and to implore compassion andmercy.	44 E così radunarono grande popolo (e grande esercito della gente Giudea), che loro fussono apparecchiati alla battaglia, e per addomandare a Dio aiuto e misericordia.
45 Jerusalem was as empty as a desert, none of her children to go in and out. The sanctuary wastrodden underfoot, men of an alien race held the Citadel, which had become a lodging for gentiles. There was nomore rejoicing for Jacob, the flute and lyre were mute.	45 Imperciò che (in tanta paura era la provincia e il paese, che) in Ierusalem non abitava, anzi era come uno deserto; e non vi era alcuno (de' figliuoli d' Israel nè alcuno) suo cittadino, che vi entrasse nè uscisse, e la terra santa sì era (abitata e) conculcata da gente fiera e strana e peccatrice, li quali guardavano la sua bella ròcca; onde ogni allegrezza era fuggita da' figliuoli d' Israel, e aveano abbandonato ogni dolcezza, come è di trombe e di stromenti.
46 After mustering, they made their way to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, since Mizpah was traditional y aplace of prayer for Israel.	46 E così radunati se ne vennono dinanzi da Ierusalem in (un luogo chiamato) Masfa; però che era luogo di orazione in Masfa dinanzi a Israel.
47 That day they fasted and put on sackcloth, covering their heads with ashes and tearing theirgarments.	47 E (il popolo d' Israel) digiunarono quel dì, e vestironsi di cilicii, e puosonsi cenere in capo, e istracciarono (per dolore) le loro vestimenta.
48 For the guidance that the gentiles would have sought from the images of their false gods, they openedthe Book of the Law.	48 E feciono venire i libri della legge, de' quali libri i pagani cavarono la similitudine del loro idolo.
49 They also brought out the priestly vestments, with first-fruits and tithes, and marshal ed the Naziriteswho had completed the period of their vow.	49 E trassono fuori gli ornamenti sacerdotali, e recarono le primizie e le decime; e suscitarono li Nazarei, i quali aveano già adempiuti li giorni.
50 Then, raising their voices to Heaven, they cried, 'What shal we do with these people, and where arewe to take them?	50 E con alta voce chiamarono Iddio del cielo, dicendo or come faremo noi di costoro? or dove gli meneremo noi?
51 Your holy place has been trampled underfoot and defiled, your priests mourn in their humiliation,	51 Certo i tuoi santi luoghi sono conculcati e contaminati, e li tuoi sacerdoti son convertiti a pianto e a miseria.
52 and now the gentiles are in al iance to destroy us: you know what they have in mind for us.	52 Ed ecco che le genti strane sono radunate per combatterci e consumarci; tu sai quello che loro hanno ordinato contro a noi.
53 How can we stand up and face them if you do not come to our aid?'	53 Or come potremo noi difenderci dalla loro potenza, se tu non ci aiuti?
54 Then they sounded the trumpets and raised a great shout.	54 E (avendo compiute di dire queste parole, allora ordinarono la battaglia e) venneno incontro a loro, sonando le trombe altamente.
55 Next, Judas appointed leaders for the people, to command a thousand, a hundred, fifty or ten men.	55 E Giuda ordinòe i guidatori del popolo, fece tribuni e centurioni, e quinquagenarii e decani.
56 Those who were in the middle of building a house, or were about to be married, or were planting avineyard, or were afraid, he told to go home again, as the Law al owed.	56 E adempiendo la legge, rimandò a dietro a casa loro li edificatori delle case, e li piantatori delle vigne, e quelli che aveano menato le novelle mogli, e tutti i paurosi.
57 The column then marched off and took up a position south of Emmaus.	57 E poi mosse il campo, e puosesi dal lato di mezzogiorno di Emmaum.
58 'Stand to your arms,' Judas told them, 'acquit yourselves bravely, in the morning be ready to fightthese gentiles massed against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.	58 E allora gli confortò Giuda, dicendo: apparecchiate, e siate figliuoli della fortezza, potenti e arditi, sì che domattina combattiate contro alle nazioni che sono venute a distruggere noi e li santi luoghi.
59 Better for us to die in battle than to watch the ruin of our nation and our Holy Place.	59 (Dicendo loro:) meglio ci è di morire in battaglia, che di vedere strazio (di noi e) delle nostre genti e de' santi luoghi.
60 Whatever be the wil of Heaven, he wil perform it.'	60 E poi sia quello che piace a Dio del cielo.
