1 Maccabees 3

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 His son, Judas, known as Maccabaeus, then took his place.	1 Seu filho Judas, cognominado Macabeu, ficou em seu lugar.
2 Al his brothers, and al who had attached themselves to his father, supported him, and they fought forIsrael with a wil .	2 Todos os seus irmãos o auxiliaram, bem como todos os que se tinham unido a seu pai, aceitando generosamente a promessa de combater por Israel.
3 He extended the fame of his people. Like a giant, he put on the breastplate and buckled on his warharness; he engaged in battle after battle, protecting the ranks with his sword.	3 Dilatou a glória do povo; revestiu-se com a couraça como um gigante, cingiu-se com as armas de guerra, e empenhava-se nos combates, protegendo seu exército com sua espada.
4 He was like a lion in his exploits, like a young lion roaring over its prey.	4 Assemelhava-se nas ações a um leão, e parecia um leãozinho que ruge na caçada.
5 He pursued and tracked down the renegades, he consigned those who troubled his people to theflames.	5 Perseguia e rebuscava com cuidado os traidores e lançava ao fogo os que perseguiam seu povo.
6 The renegades quailed with the terror he inspired, all evil-doers were utterly confounded, anddeliverance went forward under his leadership.	6 Os maus recuavam diante dele transidos de medo, tremiam os que praticavam o mal e a salvação do povo firmava-se em suas mãos.
7 He brought bitterness to many a king and rejoicing to Jacob by his deeds, his memory is blessed forever and ever.	7 Seus feitos exasperavam os reis, mas alegravam Jacó, e sua memória permaneceu eternamente bendita.
8 He went through the towns of Judah eliminating the irreligious from them, and diverted the Retributionfrom Israel.	8 Percorreu as cidades expulsando de Judá os ímpios, desviando assim de Israel a cólera divina.
9 His name resounded to the ends of the earth, he rallied those who were on the point of perishing.	9 Seu nome foi pronunciado até as extremidades da terra, e ele conseguiu a adesão daqueles que estavam a ponto de perecer.
10 Next, Apollonius mustered the gentiles and a large force from Samaria to make war on Israel.	10 Aconteceu que Apolônio convocou os gentios e, de Samaria, partiu com um grande exército para pelejar contra Israel.
11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him and routed and kil ed him. Many fell wounded, andthe survivors took to flight.	11 Soube-o Judas, saiu-lhe ao encontro, venceu-o e o matou; muitos caíram aos seus golpes e os restantes puseram-se em fuga.
12 Their spoils were seized and the sword of Apollonius was taken by Judas, who used it to fight withthroughout his life.	12 Apoderou-se dos espólios, tomou a espada de Apolônio, e desde então usava-a sempre nos combates.
13 On hearing that Judas had raised a mixed force of believers and seasoned fighters,	13 Seron, general do exército sírio, veio a saber que Judas cercara-se de soldados fiéis convocados e que ele os levara ao combate.
14 Seron, commander of the Syrian troops, said, 'I shall make a name for myself and gain honour in thekingdom if I fight Judas and those supporters of his who are so contemptuous of the king's orders.'	14 Tornar-me-ei célebre, disse ele, e cobrir-me-ei de glória no reino, vencerei Judas com seus correligionários, que se opõem às ordens reais.
15 He therefore launched another expedition, with a strong army of unbelievers to support him in takingrevenge on the Israelites.	15 Armou-se ele para a guerra. Um poderoso exército de ímpios marchou com ele, para reforçar e tomar vingança dos filhos de Israel.
16 He had nearly reached the descent of Beth-Horon when Judas went out to confront him with a handfulof men.	16 Avançaram até a muralha de Betoron e Judas, seguido de poucos homens, foi-lhe ao encontro.
17 But as soon as these saw the force advancing to meet them, they said to Judas, 'How can we, few aswe are, engage such overwhelming numbers? We are exhausted as it is, not having had anything to eat today.'	17 Mas à vista do exército que vinha contra eles, os companheiros de Judas disseram-lhe: Como poderemos enfrentar tamanho exército, se somos tão poucos, tanto mais que nos sentimos fracos, porque hoje nada temos comido?
18 'It is easy', Judas answered, 'for a great number to be defeated by a few; indeed, in the sight ofHeaven, deliverance, whether by many or by few, is al one;	18 É fácil, respondeu Judas, a um punhado de gente fazer-se respeitar por muitos; para o Deus do céu não há diferença entre a salvação de uma multidão e de um punhado de homens,
19 for victory in war does not depend on the size of the fighting force: Heaven accords the strength.	19 porque a vitória no combate não depende do número, mas da força que desce do céu.
20 They are coming against us in ful -blown insolence and lawlessness to destroy us, our wives and ourchildren, and to plunder us;	20 Esta gente vem contra nós, com insolência e orgulho, para nos aniquilar, juntamente com nossas mulheres e nossos filhos, e para nos despojar;
21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws,	21 nós, porém, lutamos por nossas vidas e nossas leis.
22 and he will crush them before our eyes; do not be afraid of them.'	22 O próprio Deus os esmagará aos nossos olhos. Não os temais.
23 When he had finished speaking, he made a sudden sal y against Seron and his force andoverwhelmed them.	23 E logo que cessara de falar, arrojou-se Judas com rapidez sobre os inimigos, e Seron diante dele foi derrotado com seu exército;
24 Judas pursued them down from Beth-Horon as far as the plain. About eight hundred of their men fel ,and the rest took refuge in the country of the Philistines.	24 e Judas o perseguiu na descida de Betoron até a planície. Morreram cerca de oitocentos sírios e os restantes fugiram para a terra dos filisteus.
25 Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and alarm seized the surrounding peoples.	25 E foi assim que se espalhou o terror de Judas e dos seus irmãos e todos os povos das vizinhanças encheram-se de consternação.
26 His name even reached the king's ears, and among the nations there was talk of Judas and hisbattles.	26 Seu nome chegou aos ouvidos do rei, e todas as nações comentaram os feitos heróicos de Judas.
27 The news of these events infuriated Antiochus, and he ordered mobilisation of al the forces in hiskingdom, a very powerful army.	27 Quando o rei Antíoco soube dessas novas, encolerizou-se terrivelmente, reuniu todas as forças do reino, de que formou um exército poderosíssimo.
28 Opening his treasury, he distributed a year's pay to his troops, telling them to be prepared for anyeventuality.	28 Abriu seu tesouro, e deu ao exército o soldo de um ano com a ordem de estarem prontos para qualquer eventualidade.
29 He then found that the money in his coffers had run short and that the tribute of the province haddecreased, as a result of the dissension and disaster brought on the country by his own abrogation of laws thathad been in force from antiquity.	29 No entanto viu que lhe faltava dinheiro no tesouro e que os tributos do território eram deficientes em vista das perturbações e da maldade que havia provocado, suprimindo em toda a parte as instituições em vigor, desde outrora.
30 He began to fear that, as had happened more than once, he would not have enough to cover theexpenses and the lavish bounties he had previously been accustomed to make on a larger scale than hispredecessors on the throne.	30 Receou, portanto, não poder pagar as despesas, como fizera já uma ou duas vezes, e outorgar as liberalidades, que distribuía em certo tempo com mão generosa, porque excedia em liberalidade a todos os reis, seus predecessores.
31 In this grave quandary he resolved to invade Persia, there to levy tribute on the provinces and soaccumulate substantial funds.	31 Profundamente consternado, resolveu ir à Pérsia cobrar os tributos dessas regiões e ajuntar muito dinheiro.
32 He therefore left Lysias, a nobleman and member of the royal family, to manage the royal affairsbetween the River Euphrates and the Egyptian frontier,	32 Deixou Lísias, pessoa de relevo, de linhagem real, para dirigir os negócios do reino, do Eufrates às fronteiras do Egito,
33 making him responsible for the education of his son Antiochus, until he should come back.	33 e ocupar-se, até sua volta, de seu filho Antíoco.
34 To him Antiochus made over half his forces, with the elephants, giving him instructions about what hewanted done, particularly with regard to the inhabitants of Judaea and Jerusalem,	34 Deixou-lhe a metade do exército do reino, com os elefantes, e deu-lhe as instruções referentes à execução de suas vontades, especialmente o que dizia respeito aos habitantes da Judéia e de Jerusalém:
35 against whom he was to send a force, to crush and destroy the power of Israel and the remnant ofJerusalem, to wipe out their very memory from the place,	35 ele devia enviar um exército contra eles, para destruir e aniquilar o poderio de Israel e o que restava de Jerusalém, e apagar desses lugares até a sua lembrança

37 The king took the remaining half of his troops with him and set out from Antioch, the capital of hiskingdom, in the year 147; he crossed the River Euphrates and made his way through the Upper Provinces.	37 O rei tomou a outra metade do exército, partiu de Antioquia, capital de seu reino, pelo ano cento e quarenta e sete, passou o Eufrates e atravessou as terras superiores.
38 Lysias chose Ptolemy son of Dorymenes, with Nicanor and Gorgias, influential men from among theFriends of the King,	38 Lísias escolheu Ptolomeu, filho de Dorímino, Nicanor e Górgias, valorosos generais e familiares do rei; 39. enviou com estes quarenta mil homens e sete mil cavaleiros para invadir e devastar o país de Judá, conforme a ordem do rei.
39 and, under their command, despatched forty thousand foot and seven thousand horse to invade theland of Judah and devastate it, as the king had ordered.
40 The entire force set out and reached the neighbourhood of Emmaus in the lowlands, where theypitched camp.	40 Postos a caminho com todas essas tropas, chegaram à planície de Emaús e penetraram nela.
41 The local merchants, hearing the news of this, arrived at the camp, bringing with them a large amountof gold and silver, and fetters as wel , proposing to buy the Israelites as slaves; they were accompanied by acompany from Idumaea and the Philistine country.	41 Quando os mercadores ouviram falar deles, tomaram muita prata e ouro e se dirigiram com peias ao campo para comprar os filhos de Israel como escravos. Exércitos da Síria, bem como do estrangeiro, vieram juntar-se a eles.
42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation was going from bad to worse and that armies werecamping in their territory; they were also well aware that the king had ordered the people's total destruction.	42 Judas e seus irmãos viram que a situação era grave e que as forças inimigas acampavam dentro de suas fronteiras. Sabendo também como o rei havia ordenado de tratar o povo para destruí-lo e exterminá-lo,
43 So they said to each other, 'Let us restore the ruins of our people and fight for our people and oursanctuary.'	43 disseram uns aos outros: Levantemos nossa pátria de seu abatimento e lutemos por nosso povo e nossa religião.
44 The Assembly was summoned, to prepare for war, to offer prayer and to implore compassion andmercy.	44 Convocaram então toda a gente, a fim de se prepararem para a luta, de rezarem, de implorarem piedade e misericórdia de Deus.
45 Jerusalem was as empty as a desert, none of her children to go in and out. The sanctuary wastrodden underfoot, men of an alien race held the Citadel, which had become a lodging for gentiles. There was nomore rejoicing for Jacob, the flute and lyre were mute.	45 Porquanto Jerusalém estava desabitada e deserta: não havia um só de seus filhos que nela entrasse ou dela saísse. Seu santuário estava profanado, soldados estrangeiros ocupavam a cidadela, gentios faziam ali sua habitação. Toda a alegria havia desaparecido de Jacó; a flauta e a harpa estavam caladas.
46 After mustering, they made their way to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, since Mizpah was traditional y aplace of prayer for Israel.	46 Os israelitas se ajuntaram, pois, e se dirigiram a Masfa, defronte de Jerusalém, porque tinham tido outrora, em Masfa, um lugar de oração.
47 That day they fasted and put on sackcloth, covering their heads with ashes and tearing theirgarments.	47 Jejuaram aquele dia, vestiram-se com sacos, cobriram a cabeça com cinza e rasgaram suas vestes.
48 For the guidance that the gentiles would have sought from the images of their false gods, they openedthe Book of the Law.	48 Abriram um dos livros da Lei, para ler nele o que os gentios perguntavam às representações de seus falsos deuses;
49 They also brought out the priestly vestments, with first-fruits and tithes, and marshal ed the Naziriteswho had completed the period of their vow.	49 trouxeram os ornamentos sacerdotais, as primícias e os dízimos e mandaram vir os nazarenos que haviam cumprido o tempo de seu voto;
50 Then, raising their voices to Heaven, they cried, 'What shal we do with these people, and where arewe to take them?	50 em seguida sua voz se elevou com força ao céu: Que havemos nós de fazer destas ofertas e para onde vamos nós levá-las?
51 Your holy place has been trampled underfoot and defiled, your priests mourn in their humiliation,	51 Vosso santuário está profanado e manchado, vossos sacerdotes estão em luto e na humilhação,
52 and now the gentiles are in al iance to destroy us: you know what they have in mind for us.	52 as nações se coligaram para nos aniquilar e vós sabeis o que elas tramam contra nós.
53 How can we stand up and face them if you do not come to our aid?'	53 Como resistir diante deles, se vós não vierdes em nosso auxílio?
54 Then they sounded the trumpets and raised a great shout.	54 Então eles soaram a trombeta e fizeram um grande clamor.
55 Next, Judas appointed leaders for the people, to command a thousand, a hundred, fifty or ten men.	55 Depois disso Judas nomeou chefes para grupos de mil, cem, cinqüenta e dez homens,
56 Those who were in the middle of building a house, or were about to be married, or were planting avineyard, or were afraid, he told to go home again, as the Law al owed.	56 e disse aos que acabavam de construir uma casa, de tomar mulher, plantar uma vinha, ou que tinham medo, que voltassem cada qual para sua casa, conforme a lei.
57 The column then marched off and took up a position south of Emmaus.	57 Os israelitas se puseram então a caminho e vieram acampar ao sul de Emaús.
58 'Stand to your arms,' Judas told them, 'acquit yourselves bravely, in the morning be ready to fightthese gentiles massed against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.	58 Preparai-vos, disse-lhes Judas, sede corajosos e estai prontos desde a manhã para o combate a essas nações que estão unidas para nos arruinar, a nós e tudo o que possuímos de sagrado;
59 Better for us to die in battle than to watch the ruin of our nation and our Holy Place.	59 porquanto é preferível morrer no combate, que ver nosso povo perseguido e profanado nosso santuário.
60 Whatever be the wil of Heaven, he wil perform it.'	60 Que se faça somente a vontade de Deus!
