1 His son, Judas, known as Maccabaeus, then took his place.	1 E succedette in suo luogo Giuda suo figliuolo cognominato, Maccabeo:
2 Al his brothers, and al who had attached themselves to his father, supported him, and they fought forIsrael with a wil .	2 E lo assistevano tutti i suoi fratelli, e tutti quelli, che si erano uniti col padre suo, e allegramente combattevano per Israele.
3 He extended the fame of his people. Like a giant, he put on the breastplate and buckled on his warharness; he engaged in battle after battle, protecting the ranks with his sword.	3 Ed egli diede nuovo lustro alla gloria del suo popolo, e imbracciò la sua corazza, come un gigante, e si vinse delle sue armi per combattere e colla sua spada teneva sicuri gli alloggiamenti.
4 He was like a lion in his exploits, like a young lion roaring over its prey.	4 Egli nel suo fare era simile a un lione e ad un lioncello che rugge veggendo la preda.
5 He pursued and tracked down the renegades, he consigned those who troubled his people to theflames.	5 Egli non lasciò ben arere gl'iniqui, andandone in traccia, e sterminò col fuoco quelli a che perturbavano il suo popolo:
6 The renegades quailed with the terror he inspired, all evil-doers were utterly confounded, anddeliverance went forward under his leadership.	6 E il timore, che si aveva di lui rispinse i nemici, e scompigliò tutti gli artigiani di iniquità, e la mano di lui apportò salute.
7 He brought bitterness to many a king and rejoicing to Jacob by his deeds, his memory is blessed forever and ever.	7 E dava assai da pensare a molti re, e colle sue azioni consolava Giacobbe, e la memoria di lui sarà in benedizione per sempre.
8 He went through the towns of Judah eliminating the irreligious from them, and diverted the Retributionfrom Israel.	8 Egli andò in giro per le città di Giuda, e discaccionne gli empi, e rimosse il flagello da Israele.
9 His name resounded to the ends of the earth, he rallied those who were on the point of perishing.	9 E la sua rinomanza n'andò fino agli ultimi confini del mondo: ed egli riunì quei, che stavano per perire.
10 Next, Apollonius mustered the gentiles and a large force from Samaria to make war on Israel.	10 Ma Apollonio mise insieme le nazioni e un esercito numeroso e forte di Samaria per venire a battaglia con Israele.
11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him and routed and kil ed him. Many fell wounded, andthe survivors took to flight.	11 E Giuda ne fu informato, e andogli incontro, e lo sconfisse, e lo uccise, e molti furono i feriti e i morti, e il rimanente si diede alla fuga:
12 Their spoils were seized and the sword of Apollonius was taken by Judas, who used it to fight withthroughout his life.	12 E ne riportarono le spoglie; ma la spada di Apollonio se la prese Giuda, e di essa servivasi sempre nelle battaglie.

14 Seron, commander of the Syrian troops, said, 'I shall make a name for myself and gain honour in thekingdom if I fight Judas and those supporters of his who are so contemptuous of the king's orders.'	14 Disse: Io mi acquisterò un nome, e mi renderò famoso nel regno, debellando Giuda e quelli che sono con lui, che non fanno conto degli ordini del re.
15 He therefore launched another expedition, with a strong army of unbelievers to support him in takingrevenge on the Israelites.	15 E si mise in ordine, e si mossero con lui le schiere degli empi, aiuto considerevole a per vendicarsi de' figliuoli d'Israele.
16 He had nearly reached the descent of Beth-Horon when Judas went out to confront him with a handfulof men.	16 E si avanzarono fino a Bethoron, e Giuda andò loro incontro con poca gente.
17 But as soon as these saw the force advancing to meet them, they said to Judas, 'How can we, few aswe are, engage such overwhelming numbers? We are exhausted as it is, not having had anything to eat today.'	17 Ma quando questi ebber veduto l'esercito, che veniva contro di loro, dissero a Giuda: Come potrem noi tanto pochi combattere contro moltitudine cosi grande e valorosa, e noi siamo oggi stanchi pel digiuno?
18 'It is easy', Judas answered, 'for a great number to be defeated by a few; indeed, in the sight ofHeaven, deliverance, whether by many or by few, is al one;	18 Ma Giuda disse: Ell'e' facil cosa, che molti restino preda di pochi, e rispetto al Dio del cielo egli è lo stesso il salvare per mano di molti, o per mano di pochi:
19 for victory in war does not depend on the size of the fighting force: Heaven accords the strength.	19 Perocehè non dal numero delle schiere dipende il vincere in guerra, ma dal cielo tiene il valore.
20 They are coming against us in ful -blown insolence and lawlessness to destroy us, our wives and ourchildren, and to plunder us;	20 Quelli vengono contro di noi con una turba di gente insolente e superba per isterminar noi e le nostre mogli e i nostri figliuoli, e spogliarci:
21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws,	21 Ma noi combatteremo per le nostre vite e per le leggi nostre:
22 and he will crush them before our eyes; do not be afraid of them.'	22 E lo stesso Signore gli abbatterà dinanzi a noi; or voi non abbiatene paura.
23 When he had finished speaking, he made a sudden sal y against Seron and his force andoverwhelmed them.	23 E finito che ebbe di parlare, si scagliò subitamente contro di loro, e Seron col suo esercito rimase sconfitto dinanzi a lui:
24 Judas pursued them down from Beth-Horon as far as the plain. About eight hundred of their men fel ,and the rest took refuge in the country of the Philistines.	24 Ed egli lo insegui per la colàta di Bethoron sino alla pianura, e vi perirono ottocento uomini e il resto si fuggi nel paese dei Filistei.
25 Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and alarm seized the surrounding peoples.	25 E Giuda e i suoi fratelli erano il terrore di tutte le genti circonvicine:
26 His name even reached the king's ears, and among the nations there was talk of Judas and hisbattles.	26 E la fama di lui giunse fino al re; perocchè tutte le genti parlavano delle geste di Giuda.
27 The news of these events infuriated Antiochus, and he ordered mobilisation of al the forces in hiskingdom, a very powerful army.	27 Or quando Antioco udi tali cose si sdegnò forte, e mandò a riunire insieme le milizie di tutto il suo regno, esercito grandemente possente.
28 Opening his treasury, he distributed a year's pay to his troops, telling them to be prepared for anyeventuality.	28 E aperse il suo erario, e diede alle schiere lo stipendio di un anno, e comando loro, che stessero preparati a tutto.
29 He then found that the money in his coffers had run short and that the tribute of the province haddecreased, as a result of the dissension and disaster brought on the country by his own abrogation of laws thathad been in force from antiquity.	29 Ma osservò, che veniva mancando nelle sue casse il denaro, e che i tributi di quel paese erano scarsi a motivo degli scompigli e delle miserie, che egli vi avea cagionato volendo abolire le leggi, che vi erano osservate ab antico.
30 He began to fear that, as had happened more than once, he would not have enough to cover theexpenses and the lavish bounties he had previously been accustomed to make on a larger scale than hispredecessors on the throne.	30 E temè di non avere da potere spendere, e donare, come prima avea fatto a larga mano, e con munificenza superiore a quella di tutti i passati re.
31 In this grave quandary he resolved to invade Persia, there to levy tribute on the provinces and soaccumulate substantial funds.	31 Ed era in gran costernazione, e risolvè di andare in Persia a raccorre i tributi di que'paesi, e mettere insieme molto denaro.
32 He therefore left Lysias, a nobleman and member of the royal family, to manage the royal affairsbetween the River Euphrates and the Egyptian frontier,	32 E lasciò Lisia uomo di gran portata e di stirpe reale per soprintendere agli affari del regno dall'Eufrate sino al fiume d'Egitto:
33 making him responsible for the education of his son Antiochus, until he should come back.	33 E affinché avesse cura dell'educazione del suo figliuolo Antioco sino al suo ritorno.
34 To him Antiochus made over half his forces, with the elephants, giving him instructions about what hewanted done, particularly with regard to the inhabitants of Judaea and Jerusalem,	34 E gli diede la metà dell'esercito con gli elefanti, e gli diede le commissioni di tutto quello che ei voleva che si facesse, e anche riguardo agli abitanti della Giudea e di Gerusalemme,
35 against whom he was to send a force, to crush and destroy the power of Israel and the remnant ofJerusalem, to wipe out their very memory from the place,	35 Affinché egli spedisse contro di essi un esercito per abbattere il valore d'Israele e gli avanzi di Gerusalemme, e per cancellare la memoria di essi da quel paese:

37 The king took the remaining half of his troops with him and set out from Antioch, the capital of hiskingdom, in the year 147; he crossed the River Euphrates and made his way through the Upper Provinces.	37 Or il re col rimanente dell'esercito si parli di Antiochia città del suo regno l'anno cento quarantasette, e passò l'Eufrate, e trascorse le provincie superiori.
38 Lysias chose Ptolemy son of Dorymenes, with Nicanor and Gorgias, influential men from among theFriends of the King,	38 Ma Lisia scelse Tolomeo figliuolo di Dorimene e Nicanore e Gorgia, uomini potenti del numero degli amici del re:
39 and, under their command, despatched forty thousand foot and seven thousand horse to invade theland of Judah and devastate it, as the king had ordered.	39 E mandò con essi quaranta mila uomini e sette mila soldati a cavallo perché andassero nel paese di Giuda, e lo mettessero a ferro e a fuoco secondo il comando del re.
40 The entire force set out and reached the neighbourhood of Emmaus in the lowlands, where theypitched camp.	40 E quelli si mossero con tutte le schiere, e andarono a porre' il campo vicino ad Emmaum nella pianura.
41 The local merchants, hearing the news of this, arrived at the camp, bringing with them a large amountof gold and silver, and fetters as wel , proposing to buy the Israelites as slaves; they were accompanied by acompany from Idumaea and the Philistine country.	41 E i mercatanti di quei paesi, udita la fama del loro arrivo, presero seco dell'argento e dell'oro in quantità, e de' servi, e andarono agli alloggiamenti per comprare i figliuoli d'Israele come schiavi: e con quelli si unirono le schiere della Siria e quelle di altre nazioni.
42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation was going from bad to worse and that armies werecamping in their territory; they were also well aware that the king had ordered the people's total destruction.	42 Ma Giuda e i suoi fratelli veggendo, come crescevano i mali, e gli eserciti si andavano appressando ai loro confini, e avendo risaputo il comando dato dal re di sterminare e annichilare il popolo,
43 So they said to each other, 'Let us restore the ruins of our people and fight for our people and oursanctuary.'	43 Dicevano l'uno all'altro: rimettiamo in piedi il popol nostro abbattuto, e combattiamo in difesa del nostro popolo e delle nostre cose sante.
44 The Assembly was summoned, to prepare for war, to offer prayer and to implore compassion andmercy.	44 E si adunarono in corpo per prepararsi alla battaglia, e per fare orazione e domandare misericordia e pietà.
45 Jerusalem was as empty as a desert, none of her children to go in and out. The sanctuary wastrodden underfoot, men of an alien race held the Citadel, which had become a lodging for gentiles. There was nomore rejoicing for Jacob, the flute and lyre were mute.	45 E Gerusalemme non aveva abitatori, ma era come un deserto; non vi erano i suoi figliuoli, che andassero, e venissero; e il luogo santo era conculcato, e gente straniera stava nella fortezza, in cui aveano stanza le genti, ed era sbandita ogni allegria dalla casa di Giacobbe, né più vi si udiva o flauto, o cetera.
46 After mustering, they made their way to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, since Mizpah was traditional y aplace of prayer for Israel.	46 Or eglino radunatisi andarono a Maspha dirimpetto a Gerusalemme, perché Maspha era luogo di orazione per Israele.
47 That day they fasted and put on sackcloth, covering their heads with ashes and tearing theirgarments.	47 E quel giorno digiunarono, e si vestirono di cilizio, e si gettarono della cenere sulla testa, e stracciarono le loro vesti.
48 For the guidance that the gentiles would have sought from the images of their false gods, they openedthe Book of the Law.	48 E distesero i libri della legge, nè quali le genti cercavano similitudini pe' loro simulacri:
49 They also brought out the priestly vestments, with first-fruits and tithes, and marshal ed the Naziriteswho had completed the period of their vow.	49 E vi portarono gli ornamenti sacerdotali e le primizie e le decime, e fecer venire i Nazarei che avean finito il lor tempo:
50 Then, raising their voices to Heaven, they cried, 'What shal we do with these people, and where arewe to take them?	50 E alzarono fino al cielo le strilla, dicendo: che farem noi di costoro, e dove ti condurremo?
51 Your holy place has been trampled underfoot and defiled, your priests mourn in their humiliation,	51 Or che il tuo santuario e conculcato e profanato, e i tuoi sacerdoti sono in duolo e sono umiliati.
52 and now the gentiles are in al iance to destroy us: you know what they have in mind for us.	52 Ed ecco che le nazioni si son ragunate contro di noi per isperderci: tu sai quello che disegnano di fare a noi.
53 How can we stand up and face them if you do not come to our aid?'	53 Come patrem noi sostenerci in faccia a loro, se tu, o Dio, non ci aiuti?
54 Then they sounded the trumpets and raised a great shout.	54 Indi fecero risanare altamente le loro trombe.
55 Next, Judas appointed leaders for the people, to command a thousand, a hundred, fifty or ten men.	55 E dipoi Giuda nominò i condottieri del popolo, e i tribuni e centurioni e i capi di cinquanta e di dieci uomini.
56 Those who were in the middle of building a house, or were about to be married, or were planting avineyard, or were afraid, he told to go home again, as the Law al owed.	56 E a quelli, che avean di fresco fabbricate case, o che avean preso moglie, od aveano piantate vigne, e ai paurosi disse, che secondo la legge se ne tornassero ciascuno a casa sua.
57 The column then marched off and took up a position south of Emmaus.	57 E mossero il campo, e andarono a postarsi a mezzodì di Emmaum.
58 'Stand to your arms,' Judas told them, 'acquit yourselves bravely, in the morning be ready to fightthese gentiles massed against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.	58 E Giuda disse: Armatevi, e siate uomini di valore, e siate in ordine per di mattina affin di combattere contro queste genti riunite contro di noi per distruggere noi e le cose nostre sante:
59 Better for us to die in battle than to watch the ruin of our nation and our Holy Place.	59 Perocche' meglio è per noi il morire in battaglia, che vedere lo sterminio del nostro popolo e delle cose sante.
60 Whatever be the wil of Heaven, he wil perform it.'	60 E siane quello che nel cielo si vuole.
