1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 Allora Giovanni salì da Ghezer e riferì a Simone suo padre quanto Cendebeo stava compiendo.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 Simone perciò chiamò i suoi due figli più anziani, Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: "Io, i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo combattuto le guerre d'Israele dalla giovinezza fino al giorno d'oggi, e ci riuscì di liberare Israele più volte con le nostre mani.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Ora io sono vecchio, mentre voi, per divina misericordia, avete abbastanza anni. Prendete il mio posto e quello del mio fratello e uscite a combattere per la nostra nazione. L'aiuto del Cielo sia con voi!".
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 Poi scelse nella regione ventimila combattenti e cavalieri e questi si misero in marcia contro Cendebeo. Passarono la notte a Modin
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 e la mattina, levatisi, avanzarono verso la pianura. Ma ecco, dinanzi a loro un grande esercito di fanti e cavalieri. Tra essi e gli altri vi era solo un torrente.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 Giovanni con la sua gente prese posizione davanti a loro; poi, vedendo che la sua gente aveva paura di attraversare il torrente, lo attraversò egli stesso per primo; gli altri, vedendolo, lo attraversarono anch'essi appresso a lui.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 Divise la sua gente e pose i cavalieri in mezzo ai fanti. La cavalleria degli avversari era infatti molto numerosa.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 Allora suonarono le trombe e Cendebeo fu travolto insieme alla sua armata; molti di essi caddero feriti; i superstiti fuggirono verso la fortezza.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 In quell'occasione anche Giuda, fratello di Giovanni, rimase ferito; ma Giovanni li inseguì fino a che raggiunse Cedron, che Cendebeo aveva ricostruito.
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 Altri fuggirono fino alle torri che sono nei campi di Asdòd; ma egli vi appiccò il fuoco e così caddero di quelli circa duemila uomini. Giovanni poi in pace fece ritorno nella Giudea.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 Tolomeo, figlio di Abùbo, era stato costituito stratega della pianura di Gerico. Egli aveva molto argento e oro.
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 Era, infatti, genero del sommo sacerdote.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Il suo cuore però si insuperbì e, volendo diventare padrone della regione, andava facendo subdoli progetti contro Simone e i suoi figli per eliminarli.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Ora Simone, mentre stava visitando le città della regione, interessandosi delle loro necessità, scese a Gerico, lui e i suoi figli Mattatia e Giuda, l'anno 177 nell'undicesimo mese, che è il mese di Sabat.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 Il figlio di Abùbo li ricevette con inganno nella piccola fortezza chiamata Dok, che egli stesso aveva costruito; fece loro un grande banchetto e intanto teneva nascosti alcuni uomini.
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Come Simone con i suoi figli si fu inebriato, Tolomeo si levò con i suoi uomini e, impugnate le armi, si gettarono su Simone nella sala del banchetto e uccisero lui, i suoi due figli e alcuni dei suoi servi.
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 Egli così commise una grande perfidia e rese male per bene.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 Tolomeo poi scrisse un rapporto di queste cose e lo inviò al re, affinché gli inviasse truppe in aiuto e gli affidasse la regione e le città.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 Mandò anche altri a Ghezer per eliminare Giovanni e inviò lettere ai comandanti affinché si recassero da lui poiché voleva dare loro argento, oro e regali.
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 Altri ancora li inviò ad occupare Gerusalemme e il monte del tempio.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Un tale tuttavia corse avanti ad annunziare a Giovanni in Ghezer che suo padre era perito insieme ai suoi fratelli aggiungendo: "Ha inviato a uccidere anche te!".
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 Udendo ciò, Giovanni fu grandemente sconvolto. Prese gli uomini ch'erano venuti per sopprimerlo e li uccise. Sapeva, infatti, che cercavano di farlo perire.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 Quanto alle altre azioni di Giovanni, le sue guerre, gli atti di valore che egli compì, la costruzione delle mura che egli costruì e le gesta di lui,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 ecco tali cose sono scritte nel libro dei giorni del suo sommo sacerdozio, dal momento in cui divenne sommo sacerdote dopo suo padre.
