1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 - Allora Giovanni uscì di Gazerà, ed annunziò a Simone suo padre quel che faceva Cendebeo nel loro popolo.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 Simone chiamò i due figli maggiori Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: « io ed i miei fratelli, e la stirpe del padre mio, abbiam combattuto i nemici d'Israele, dalla mia giovinezza inaino ad oggi, ed abbiamo avuto qualche volta la ventura di liberar Israele.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Ora però son vecchio; ma siate voi in mio luogo, e miei fratelli; uscite a combatter per la nostra nazione, e l’aiuto del cielo sla con voi ».
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 E scelse dalla regione ventimila uomini di guerra, e cavalieri. Essi mossero incontro a Cendebeo, e pernottarono in Modili.
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 Al mattino, si levarono, e s’avanzaron nella pianura. Ed ecco di contro a loro un esercito copioso di fanti e di cavalieri, ed un torrente li divideva.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 [Giovanni] mosse le file direttamente contro a loro, egli e la sua gente; e vedendo che la turba esitava a valicar il torrente, lo valicò egli per primo; i suoi uomini lo videro, e passaron dietro a lui.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 Allora divise la sua gente, e pose i cavalieri in mezzo ai pedoni, perchè la cavalleria nemica era numerosissima.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 Poi dettero flato alle trombe sacre, e Cendebeo e le sue schiere furon messi in fuga ; molti ne caddero trafitti, ed i rimanenti fuggirono nella fortezza.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 Restò ferito Giuda fratello di Giovanni; Giovanni poi inseguì i fuggiaschi, così che giunse a Gedor che [Cendebeo] aveva ricostruita.
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 Quelli fuggirono sino alle torri del piano d’Azoto, e Giovanni v’appiccò il fuoco; vi morirono duemila uomini, ed egli se ne tornò in Giudea senz’ostacoli.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 Ora, Tolomeo figlio di Abobi era stato messo a capo della regione di Gerico, ed avevan argento ed oro in gran quantità,
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 essendo genero del sommo sacerdote.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Ma s’inorgoglì, ed ambiva d’esser signore della regione, e meditava insidie contro Simone e i suoi figli, per toglierli di mezzo.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Simone dunque, visitando le città del territorio della Giudea per prenderne cura, venne a Gerico, egli, e Matatia e Giuda suoi figli, l’anno centosettantasette, l’undecimo mese, e mese di Sabat.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 Il figlio d’Abobi, per ingannarli, li ricevè in una piccola fortezza da lui edificata, detta Doch. Fece loro un gran convito, e vi mise uomini in agguato.
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Quando Simone e i suoi figli fu reno rallegrati dal vino, Tolomeo si levò co' suoi uomini, presero le armi, irruppero nella sala del convito ed uccisero Simone e i suol due figli, ed alcuni del suo seguito
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 facendo una gran perfidia In Israele, e rendendo male per bene.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 Di poi, Tolomeo scrisse al re queste cose, e mandò a chiedergli che gli mandasse in aiuto un esercito, e gli desse signoria sulla regione e le città e i tributi.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 Altri mandò in Gazara per levar di mezzo Giovanni; ed al tribuni di lui inviò lettere perchè passassero dalla sua parte, che egli darebbe loro argento ed oro e regali.
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 Altri poi mandò ad occupare Gerusalemme ed il monte del tempio.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Ma uno corse avanti, ed annunziò a Giovanni in Gazara che il padre ed i fratelli eran morti, e che: «Ora manda ad uccidere anche te ».
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 Quando ciò seppe, s’intimorì grandemente; e fatti prendere quelli ch’eran venuti a’ suoi danni, li mise a morte. Conobbe infatti che cercavan d'uccider lui.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 Quanto agli altri eventi di Giovanni, ed alle sue guerre, ed alle imprese da lui fortemente condotte, ed alle mura da lui ricostruite, e le altre sue geste,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 ecco che sono scritte nelle cronache del suo sacerdozio, da che fu fatto principe de' sacerdoti dopo il padre suo.
