NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 Juan subió desde Gázara a contar a su padre Simón lo que estaba haciendo Cendebeo.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 Simón llamó entonces a sus dos hijos mayores, Judas y Juan, y les dijo: «Yo, mis hermanos y la familia de mi padre hemos combatido a los enemigos de Israel desde nuestra juventud hasta el día de hoy, y gracias a nosotros se logró más de una vez la liberación de Israel.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Pero ahora estoy viejo, mientras que ustedes, por la misericordia del Cielo, están en la mejor edad. Ocupen mi puesto y el de mi hermano, salgan a combatir por nuestra nación y que la ayuda del Cielo esté con ustedes».
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 Después seleccionó veinte mil combatientes y jinetes del país, y estos partieron para atacar a Cendebeo. Pasaron la noche en Modín
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 y, al amanecer, se levantaron y avanzaron hacia la llanura. De pronto divisaron un numeroso ejército, compuesto de soldados y jinetes, que venía a su encuentro. Entre ellos se interponía un torrente.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 Juan tomó posiciones con sus tropas frente al enemigo y, advirtiendo que sus hombres tenían miedo de pasar el torrente, lo pasó el primero. Al verlo, todos los demás lo siguieron.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 El había dividido su ejército en dos cuerpos, poniendo la caballería en medio de la infantería, porque la caballería del enemigo era muy numerosa.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 En seguida tocaron las trompetas, y Cendebeo fue derrotado con todo su ejército. Muchos de ellos murieron y los restantes huyeron en dirección a la fortaleza.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 Entonces fue herido Judas, el hermano de Juan. Este los persiguió hasta que Cendebeo entró en Cedrón, la fortaleza que había reconstruido.
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 Algunos huyeron también a las torres de los campos de Azoto. Juan las incendió, y murieron unos dos mil enemigos. Luego Juan regresó a Judea sano y salvo.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 Tolomeo, hijo de Abubos, había sido designado comandante de la llanura de Jericó y poseía mucha plata y oro.
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 por ser yerno del Sumo Sacerdote.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Su corazón se ensoberbeció tanto que aspiró a adueñarse del país, y por eso maquinaba pérfidamente la manera de eliminar a Simón y a sus hijos.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Una vez, mientras Simón inspeccionaba las ciudades del país y se ocupaba de su administración, bajó a Jericó, con sus hijos Matatías y Judas. Era en el undécimo mes, el mes de Sabat, del año ciento setenta y siete.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 El hijo de Abubos los recibió dolorosamente en la pequeña fortaleza llamada Doc, que él había hecho construir. Allí les sirvió un gran banquete, a la vez que les preparaba una emboscada.
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Cuando Simón y sus hijos estuvieron ebrios, Tolomeo y sus hombres se levantaron, empuñaron sus armas, se precipitaron sobre Simón en la sal del banquete y lo mataron, junto con sus dos hijos y algunos de sus servidores.
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 Así cometió una grave traición, devolviendo mal por bien.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 Luego Tolomeo escribió un informe al rey acerca de lo sucedido, pidiéndole que le enviara tropas en su auxilio y que le cediera las ciudades y el país.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 Además, mandó otros emisarios de Gázara con el encargo de matar a Juan y envió cartas a los oficiales del ejército, invitándolos a reunirse con él para obsequiarles oro, plata y otros regalos.
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 Finalmente, envió algunos hombres para que ocuparan Jerusalén y la montaña del Templo.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Pero alguien se adelantó y anunció a Juan en Gázara que su padre y sus hermanos habían muerto, y añadió: «Ha enviado gente para matarte también a ti».
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 Esta noticia lo dejó consternado. Entonces mandó arrestar a los hombres que venían a matarlo y los hizo ejecutar, porque sabía que pretendían asesinarlo.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 El resto de las acciones de Juan, sus guerras y las hazañas que llevó a cabo, las murallas que construyó, sus hechos y sus gestas,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 todo esto está escrito en los Anales de su pontificado, a partir del día en que sucedió a su padre como Sumo Sacerdote.
