1 Maccabees 16

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 Jean monta de Gazara et avertit Simon son père de ce que Kendébée était en traind'accomplir.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 Simon appela alors ses deux fils les plus âgés, Judas et Jean, et leur dit: "Mes frères et moi,et la maison de mon père, nous avons combattu les ennemis d'Israël depuis notre jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour, et nosmains ont réussi à sauver Israël maintes fois.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Maintenant je suis vieux, tandis que vous, par la miséricorde du ciel, vous êtes d'un âgesuffisant: prenez ma place et celle de mon frère et partez combattre pour notre nation, et que le secours du Cielsoit avec vous."
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 Puis il choisit dans le pays 20.000 combattants et des cavaliers qui marchèrent sur Kendébéeet passèrent la nuit à Modîn.
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 S'étant levés le matin, ils s'avancèrent vers la plaine. Et voici qu'une armée nombreusevenait à leur rencontre, fantassins et cavaliers, mais il y avait un torrent entre eux.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 Jean prit position en face des ennemis, lui et sa troupe, et, voyant que la troupe craignait detraverser le torrent, il passa le premier. A cette vue, ses hommes à leur tour passèrent après lui.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 Il divisa la troupe (en deux corps) avec les cavaliers au milieu des fantassins, car la cavaleriedes adversaires était fort nombreuse.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 Les trompettes retentirent et Kendébée fut mis en fuite avec son armée; beaucoup tombèrentfrappés à mort; ceux qui échappèrent s'enfuirent vers la forteresse.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 C'est alors que fut blessé Judas, le frère de Jean. Quant à Jean, il les poursuivit jusqu'à ceque Kendébée arrivât à Kédrôn qu'il avait rebâtie.
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 Ils s'enfuirent jusqu'aux tours qui sont dans les champs d'Azôtos, que Jean incendia. 2.000d'entre eux succombèrent et il retourna en paix dans la Judée.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 Ptolémée fils d'Aboubos avait été établi stratège de la plaine de Jéricho, il possédaitbeaucoup d'or et d'argent,
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 car il était le gendre du grand prêtre.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Son coeur s'enorgueillit; il aspira à se rendre maître du pays et formait des desseinsperfides contre Simon et ses fils pour les supprimer.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Or Simon faisait une tournée d'inspection dans les villes du pays, soucieux de ce quiregardait leur administration. Il descendit à Jéricho, lui et ses fils Mattathias et Judas, l'année 177, au onzièmemois qui est le mois de Shebat.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 Le fils d'Aboubos les reçut par ruse dans une petite forteresse, nommée Dôk, qu'il avaitbâtie. Il leur servit un grand banquet et cacha des hommes (dans le fortin).
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Lorsque Simon fut ivre ainsi que ses fils, Ptolémée se leva avec ses hommes et, prenantleurs armes, ils se précipitèrent sur Simon dans la salle du festin et le tuèrent avec ses deux fils et quelques-unsde ses serviteurs.
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 Il commit ainsi une grande perfidie et rendit le mal pour le bien.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 Ptolémée en écrivit un rapport qu'il adressa au roi, afin de se faire envoyer des troupes desecours et de lui livrer les villes et la province.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 Il envoya d'autres émissaires à Gazara pour supprimer Jean, et manda par lettre auxchiliarques de venir auprès de lui pour qu'il leur donnât de l'argent, de l'or et des présents.
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 Il en dépêcha d'autres pour prendre possession de Jérusalem et de la montagne dusanctuaire.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Mais quelqu'un, ayant pris les devants, avait annoncé à Jean, à Gazara, que son père et sesfrères avaient péri, et il dit: "Il a envoyé quelqu'un pour te tuer toi aussi."
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 A cette nouvelle, Jean fut tout bouleversé; il arrêta les hommes venus pour le tuer et les mità mort, car il savait qu'ils cherchaient à le perdre.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 Quant au reste des actions de Jean, ses combats et les exploits qu'il accomplit, les rempartsqu'il construisit et ses autres entreprises,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 cela est écrit dans le livre des Annales de son pontificat depuis le jour où il devint grandprêtre après son père.
