1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 Allora Giovanni salì da Ghezer e riferì a Simone, suo padre, quanto faceva Cendebeo.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 Simone chiamò i suoi due figli maggiori, Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: «Io e i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo combattuto le battaglie d’Israele dalla gioventù fino ad oggi, e riuscì nelle nostre mani l’impresa di salvare Israele più volte.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Ora io sono vecchio e voi, per misericordia del Cielo, avete l’età adatta; prendete il posto mio e di mio fratello e fatevi avanti a combattere per il vostro popolo. L’aiuto del Cielo sia con voi».
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 Giovanni arruolò nella regione ventimila uomini esperti nelle armi e cavalieri; partirono contro Cendebeo e passarono la notte a Modin.
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 Alzatisi il mattino, proseguirono per la pianura ed ecco venire incontro a loro un esercito ingente, fanti e cavalleria; ma un torrente li separava.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 Giovanni con la sua gente pose il campo di fronte a loro, ma vedendo che la gente esitava ad attraversare il torrente, passò per primo. Lo videro i suoi uomini e passarono dopo di lui.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 Quindi divise la gente e pose i cavalieri in mezzo ai fanti, perché la cavalleria degli avversari era molto numerosa.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 Poi diedero fiato alle trombe: Cendebeo e il suo schieramento furono respinti; molti della loro parte caddero colpiti a morte e i superstiti si rifugiarono nella fortezza.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 Fu ferito allora anche Giuda, fratello di Giovanni. Giovanni invece li inseguì, finché giunse a Cedron, che Cendebeo aveva ricostruito;
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 si rifugiarono nelle torri esistenti nelle campagne di Azoto, ma egli vi appiccò il fuoco. Restarono sul campo circa duemila nemici. Poi Giovanni ritornò in Giudea in pace.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 Tolomeo, figlio di Abubo, era stato costituito stratega della pianura di Gerico. Egli possedeva molto argento e oro,
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 poiché era il genero del sommo sacerdote.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Il suo cuore si inorgoglì e si propose di impadronirsi del paese e covava perfidi disegni contro Simone e i suoi figli per eliminarli.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Simone era in visita alle città della regione e si interessava delle loro necessità. Venne allora a Gerico insieme con Mattatia e Giuda, suoi figli, nell’anno centosettantasette, nell’undicesimo mese, cioè il mese di Sebat.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 Il figlio di Abubo, che covava il tradimento, li ricevette nella cittadella, chiamata Dok, che egli aveva costruito, e servì loro un grande banchetto, nascondendo lì degli uomini armati.
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Quando Simone e i figli furono ubriachi, Tolomeo e i suoi uomini si alzarono, impugnarono le armi, si scagliarono contro Simone nella sala del banchetto e trucidarono lui, i due figli e alcuni suoi servi.
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 Così commise un’enorme perfidia e rese male per bene.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 Tolomeo poi scrisse un rapporto di queste cose e lo inviò al re, perché gli mandasse milizie in aiuto e gli desse in consegna la loro regione e le città.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 Inviò altri uomini a Ghezer per eliminare Giovanni e spedì lettere ai suoi comandanti, che venissero da lui, perché voleva dare loro argento, oro e doni;
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 altri infine inviò a occupare Gerusalemme e il monte del tempio.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Ma qualcuno corse avanti e informò Giovanni, a Ghezer, che suo padre e i suoi fratelli erano morti, aggiungendo: «Ha inviato uomini per uccidere anche te».
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 Udendo ciò, Giovanni rimase profondamente costernato; catturò gli uomini inviati per sopprimerlo, e li mise a morte. Aveva infatti saputo che cercavano di ucciderlo.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 Le altre azioni di Giovanni, le sue battaglie e gli atti di valore da lui compiuti, la ricostruzione delle mura da lui eseguita e le sue imprese,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 ecco tutto questo sta scritto negli annali del suo sommo sacerdozio, da quando divenne sommo sacerdote dopo la morte di suo padre.
