Exodus 4

1 Moses replied as fol ows, 'But suppose they wil not believe me or listen to my words, and say to me,"Yahweh has not appeared to you"?'	1 Mosè replicò dicendo: «Ecco, non mi crederanno, non daranno ascolto alla mia voce, ma diranno: “Non ti è apparso il Signore!”».
2 Yahweh then said, 'What is that in your hand?' 'A staff,' he said.	2 Il Signore gli disse: «Che cosa hai in mano?». Rispose: «Un bastone».
3 'Throw it on the ground,' said Yahweh. Moses threw it on the ground; the staff turned into a snake andMoses recoiled from it.	3 Riprese: «Gettalo a terra!». Lo gettò a terra e il bastone diventò un serpente, davanti al quale Mosè si mise a fuggire.
4 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Reach out your hand and catch it by the tail.' He reached out his hand,caught it, and in his hand it turned back into a staff.	4 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Stendi la mano e prendilo per la coda!». Stese la mano, lo prese e diventò di nuovo un bastone nella sua mano.
5 'Thus they may believe that Yahweh, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaacand the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.'	5 «Questo perché credano che ti è apparso il Signore, Dio dei loro padri, Dio di Abramo, Dio di Isacco, Dio di Giacobbe».
6 Next, Yahweh said to him, 'Put your hand inside your tunic.' He put his hand inside his tunic, then drewit out again: and his hand was diseased, white as snow.	6 Il Signore gli disse ancora: «Introduci la mano nel seno!». Egli si mise in seno la mano e poi la ritirò: ecco, la sua mano era diventata lebbrosa, bianca come la neve.
7 Yahweh then said, 'Put your hand back inside your tunic.' He put his hand back inside his tunic andwhen he drew it out, there it was restored, just like the rest of his flesh.	7 Egli disse: «Rimetti la mano nel seno!». Rimise in seno la mano e la tirò fuori: ecco, era tornata come il resto della sua carne.
8 'Even so: should they not believe you nor be convinced by the first sign, the second sign wil convincethem;	8 «Dunque se non ti credono e non danno retta alla voce del primo segno, crederanno alla voce del secondo!
9 but should they not be convinced by either of these two signs and refuse to listen to what you say, youare to take some water from the River and pour it on the ground, and the water you have taken from the Riverwil turn to blood on the dry land.'	9 Se non crederanno neppure a questi due segni e non daranno ascolto alla tua voce, prenderai acqua del Nilo e la verserai sulla terra asciutta: l’acqua che avrai preso dal Nilo diventerà sangue sulla terra asciutta».
10 Moses said to Yahweh, 'Please, my Lord, I have never been eloquent, even since you have spoken toyour servant, for I am slow and hesitant of speech.'	10 Mosè disse al Signore: «Perdona, Signore, io non sono un buon parlatore; non lo sono stato né ieri né ieri l’altro e neppure da quando tu hai cominciato a parlare al tuo servo, ma sono impacciato di bocca e di lingua».
11 'Who gave a person a mouth?' Yahweh said to him. 'Who makes a person dumb or deaf, gives sight ormakes blind? Is it not I, Yahweh?	11 Il Signore replicò: «Chi ha dato una bocca all’uomo o chi lo rende muto o sordo, veggente o cieco? Non sono forse io, il Signore?
12 Now go, I shall help you speak and instruct you what to say.'	12 Ora va’! Io sarò con la tua bocca e ti insegnerò quello che dovrai dire».
13 'Please, my Lord,' Moses replied, 'send anyone you decide to send!'	13 Mosè disse: «Perdona, Signore, manda chi vuoi mandare!».
14 At this, Yahweh's anger kindled against Moses, and he said to him, 'There is your brother Aaron theLevite, is there not? I know that he is a good speaker. Here he comes to meet you. When he sees you, his heartwil be full of joy.	14 Allora la collera del Signore si accese contro Mosè e gli disse: «Non vi è forse tuo fratello Aronne, il levita? Io so che lui sa parlare bene. Anzi, sta venendoti incontro. Ti vedrà e gioirà in cuor suo.
15 You will speak to him and tel him what message to give. I shal help you speak, and him too, andinstruct you what to do.	15 Tu gli parlerai e porrai le parole sulla sua bocca e io sarò con la tua e la sua bocca e vi insegnerò quello che dovrete fare.
16 He will speak to the people in your place; he wil be your mouthpiece, and you wil be as the godinspiring him.	16 Parlerà lui al popolo per te: egli sarà la tua bocca e tu farai per lui le veci di Dio.
17 And take this staff in your hand; with this you will perform the signs.'	17 Terrai in mano questo bastone: con esso tu compirai i segni».
18 Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, 'Give me leave to return to my kinsmen inEgypt and see if they are stil alive.' And Jethro said to Moses, 'Go in peace.'	18 Mosè partì, tornò da Ietro suo suocero e gli disse: «Lasciami andare, ti prego: voglio tornare dai miei fratelli che sono in Egitto, per vedere se sono ancora vivi!». Ietro rispose a Mosè: «Va’ in pace!».
19 Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, 'Go, return to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kil you are dead.'	19 Il Signore disse a Mosè in Madian: «Va’, torna in Egitto, perché sono morti quanti insidiavano la tua vita!».
20 So Moses took his wife and his son and, putting them on a donkey, started back for Egypt; and Mosestook the staff of God in his hand.	20 Mosè prese la moglie e i figli, li fece salire sull’asino e tornò nella terra d’Egitto. E Mosè prese in mano il bastone di Dio.
21 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Think of the wonders I have given you power to perform, once you are back inEgypt! You are to perform them before Pharaoh, but I myself shal make him obstinate, and he wil not let thepeople go.	21 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Mentre parti per tornare in Egitto, bada a tutti i prodigi che ti ho messi in mano: tu li compirai davanti al faraone, ma io indurirò il suo cuore ed egli non lascerà partire il popolo.
22 You will then say to Pharaoh, "This is what Yahweh says: Israel is my first-born son.	22 Allora tu dirai al faraone: “Così dice il Signore: Israele è il mio figlio primogenito.
23 I told you: Let my son go and worship me; but since you refuse to let him go, well then! I shall put yourfirst-born son to death." '	23 Io ti avevo detto: lascia partire il mio figlio perché mi serva! Ma tu hai rifiutato di lasciarlo partire: ecco, io farò morire il tuo figlio primogenito!”».
24 On the journey, when he had halted for the night, Yahweh encountered him and tried to kil him.	24 Mentre era in viaggio, nel luogo dove pernottava, il Signore lo affrontò e cercò di farlo morire.
25 Then Zipporah, taking up a flint, cut off her son's foreskin and with it touched his feet and said, 'Youare my blood-bridegroom!'	25 Allora Sipporà prese una selce tagliente, recise il prepuzio al figlio e con quello gli toccò i piedi e disse: «Tu sei per me uno sposo di sangue».
26 So he let him go. She said, 'Blood-bridegroom' then, with reference to the circumcision.	26 Allora il Signore si ritirò da lui. Ella aveva detto «sposo di sangue» a motivo della circoncisione.
27 Yahweh said to Aaron, 'Go into the desert to meet Moses.' So he went, and met him at the mountainof God and kissed him.	27 Il Signore disse ad Aronne: «Va’ incontro a Mosè nel deserto!». Egli andò e lo incontrò al monte di Dio e lo baciò.
28 Moses then told Aaron al that Yahweh had said when sending him and al the signs he had orderedhim to perform.	28 Mosè riferì ad Aronne tutte le parole con le quali il Signore lo aveva inviato e tutti i segni con i quali l’aveva accreditato.
29 Moses and Aaron then went and gathered al the elders of the Israelites together,	29 Mosè e Aronne andarono e radunarono tutti gli anziani degli Israeliti.
30 and Aaron repeated everything that Yahweh had said to Moses, and in the sight of the peopleperformed the signs.	30 Aronne parlò al popolo, riferendo tutte le parole che il Signore aveva detto a Mosè, e compì i segni davanti agli occhi del popolo.
31 The people were convinced, and they rejoiced that Yahweh had visited the Israelites and seen theirmisery, and they bowed to the ground in worship.	31 Allora il popolo credette. Quando udirono che il Signore aveva visitato gli Israeliti e che aveva visto la loro afflizione, essi si inginocchiarono e si prostrarono.
