1 There was a man descended from Levi who had taken a woman of Levi as his wife.	1 Dopo queste cose avvenne che un uomo della tribù di Levi andò a prender per moglie una della sua stirpe,
2 She conceived and gave birth to a son and, seeing what a fine child he was, she kept him hidden forthree months.	2 la quale concepì e partorì un figliolo, e, vedendolo tanto bello, lo tenne nascosto per tre mesi.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him; coating it with bitumen and pitch,she put the child inside and laid it among the reeds at the River's edge.	3 Ma non potendo più celarlo, prese un canestro di giunchi e spalmatolo di pece e bitume, vi mise dentro il bambino, e cosi lo espose nella giuncaia, presso la riva del fiume,
4 His sister took up position some distance away to see what would happen to him.	4 mentre la sorella di lui, da una certa distanza, stava a osservare quello che ne avvenisse.
5 Now Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe in the river, while her maids walked along the riverside.Among the reeds she noticed the basket, and she sent her maid to fetch it.	5 Ed ecco la figlia di Faraone scendere nel fiume a bagnarsi, mentre le sue ancelle passeggiavano lungo la riva del fiume. Avendo essa veduto il canestro tra i giunchi, mandò una delle sue ancelle a prenderlo.
6 She opened it and saw the child: the baby was crying. Feeling sorry for it, she said, 'This is one of thelittle Hebrews.'	6 L'aprì, e, vistovi dentro un bambino che vagiva, ne ebbe compassione e disse: « Questo deve essere un bambino degli Ebrei ».
7 The child's sister then said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shal I go and find you a nurse among the Hebrewwomen to nurse the child for you?'	7 Allora la sorella del fanciullo le disse: « Devo andare a chiamarti una donna ebrea che possa allevare il bambino? ».
8 'Yes,' said Pharaoh's daughter, and the girl went and cal ed the child's own mother.	8 Essa rispose: « Va pure ». La fanciulla andò a chiamar sua madre,
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse it for me. I shal pay you myself fordoing so.' So the woman took the child away and nursed it.	9 alla quale la figlia di Faraone così parlò: « Prendi questo bambino e allevamelo; e io ti darò la tua mercede ». La donna prese ed allevò il bambino, e quando fu adulto lo consegnò alla figlia di Faraone,
10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like a son; shenamed him Moses 'because', she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'	10 che lo adottò come figlio e gli pose nome Mosè, dicendo: «Io l'ho tratto dall'acqua».
11 It happened one day, when Moses was grown up, that he went to see his kinsmen. While he waswatching their forced labour he also saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen.	11 Or in quel tempo, essendo già adulto, Mosè andò a trovare i suoi fratelli e ne vide l'oppressione, e notò un Egiziano che percuoteva uno degli Ebrei suoi fratelli.
12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one in sight, he kil ed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Volse intorno lo sguardo, e visto che non c'era nessuno, uccise l'Egiziano e lo nascose tra la sabbia.
13 On the following day he came back, and there were two Hebrews, fighting. He said to the man whowas in the wrong, 'What do you mean by hitting your kinsman?'	13 Tornato poi il giorno dopo, ecco due Ebrei in litigio; ed egli disse a quello che faceva ingiuria: « Perchè percuoti il tuo prossimo? »
14 'And who appointed you', the man retorted, 'to be prince over us and judge? Do you intend to kil meas you kil ed the Egyptian?' Moses was frightened. 'Clearly that business has come to light,' he thought.	14 E quello rispose: « Chi ti ha creato principe e giudice sopra di noi? Vuoi forse uccider me come ieri uccidesti l'Egiziano? » Allora Mosè fu preso da paura, e disse: « Come mai si è risaputa questa cosa? »
15 When Pharaoh heard of the matter, he tried to put Moses to death, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. Hewent into Midianite territory and sat down beside a wel .	15 Poi Faraone, informato del fatto, cercò di uccider Mosè; ma egli fuggì dal cospetto di Faraone, e, fermatosi nella terra di Madian, si pose a sedere vicino ad un pozzo.
16 Now there was a priest of Midian with seven daughters. They used to come to draw water and fil thetroughs to water their father's flock.	16 Ora il sacerdote di Madian aveva sette figliole, le quali vennero ad attingere acqua. Già riempiti gli abbeveratoi, volevano abbeverare le gregge del loro padre;
17 Some shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses sprang to their help and watered their flock.	17 ma sopraggiunsero dei pastori che le scacciarono. Allora Mosè s'alzò, e prese le difese delle fanciulle, abbeverò le loro pecore.
18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, 'Why are you back so early today?'	18 Or quando esse tornarono da Raguele loro padre, egli disse: « Come mai siete tornate più presto del solito? »
19 'An Egyptian protected us from the shepherds,' they said, 'and he even drew water for us and wateredthe flock.'	19 Risposero: « Un Egiziano ci ha liberate dalle mani dei pastori, e di più ha attinto l'acqua con noi, ed ha abbeverate le pecore ».
20 'And where is he?' he asked his daughters. 'Why did you leave the man there? Ask him to eat with us.'	20 Ed egli disse: « Dovè? Perchè l'avete lasciato partire? Chiamatelo a mangiare del pane ».
21 Moses agreed to stay on there with the man, who gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.	21 Mosè adunque giurò di abitare con lui e prese per moglie Sefora sua figliola.
22 She gave birth to a son, whom he named Gershom 'because', he said, 'I am an alien in a foreign land.'	22 Ed essa gli partorì un figlio che egli chiamò Gersam, dicendo: « Sono stato pellegrino in terra straniera ». Ne partorì poi un altro, e lo chiamò Eliezer, dicendo: « Il Dio del mio padre mi aiutò e mi liberò dalle mani di Faraone ».
23 During this long period the king of Egypt died. The Israelites, groaning in their slavery, cried out forhelp and from the depths of their slavery their cry came up to God.	23 Or dopo molto tempo mori il re d'Egitto, e i figli d'Israele, gemendo sotto le fatiche, alzarono le grida che, strappate loro dai lavori forzati, salirono a Dio,
24 God heard their groaning; God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	24 Il quale, udito il loro gemito, si ricordò dell'alleanza fatta con Abramo, con Isacco e con Giacobbe.
25 God saw the Israelites and took note.	25 Allora il Signore volse gli occhi ai figli d'Israele e li riconobbe.
