1 There was a man descended from Levi who had taken a woman of Levi as his wife.	1 - Dopo queste cose, un uomo della tribù di Levi andò a prender in moglie una della sua tribù.
2 She conceived and gave birth to a son and, seeing what a fine child he was, she kept him hidden forthree months.	2 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio, e vedendolo molto bello lo tenne nascosto per tre mesi.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him; coating it with bitumen and pitch,she put the child inside and laid it among the reeds at the River's edge.	3 Ma poi, non potendolo più a lungo nascondere, prese una cesta di vimini, la spalmò di bitume e di pece, vi mise dentro il fanciullino, e l'espose così fra i giunchi alla riva del fiume,
4 His sister took up position some distance away to see what would happen to him.	4 mentre che la sorella di lui stava in distanza a vedere come la cosa finisse.
5 Now Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe in the river, while her maids walked along the riverside.Among the reeds she noticed the basket, and she sent her maid to fetch it.	5 Or ecco che la figlia del Faraone veniva per bagnarsi nel fiume, e le sue ancelle camminavano lungo la sponda. Vista nel canneto quella cestina, mandò una delle sue serve a prenderla, e, fattasela portare,
6 She opened it and saw the child: the baby was crying. Feeling sorry for it, she said, 'This is one of thelittle Hebrews.'	6 l'aprì. Vedendo in essa un fanciullino che vagiva, n'ebbe compassione, e disse: «Questo è un bambino d'Ebrei».
7 The child's sister then said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shal I go and find you a nurse among the Hebrewwomen to nurse the child for you?'	7 Allora la sorella del fanciullo le domandò: «Vuoi ch'io vada a chiamarti una donna ebrea, la quale possa allattare il bambino?».
8 'Yes,' said Pharaoh's daughter, and the girl went and cal ed the child's own mother.	8 Rispose: «Va' pure». La fanciulla andò, e chiamò la stessa sua madre.
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse it for me. I shal pay you myself fordoing so.' So the woman took the child away and nursed it.	9 Alla quale la figlia del Faraone disse: «Prendi questo bambino, e dagli latte per conto mio; io te ne darò la ricompensa». La donna prese e rilevò il fanciullo, e quando fu cresciuto lo consegnò alla figlia del Faraone.
10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like a son; shenamed him Moses 'because', she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'	10 La quale lo adottò come figlio, e gli mise nome Mosè, dicendo: «L'ho preso di mezzo all'acqua».
11 It happened one day, when Moses was grown up, that he went to see his kinsmen. While he waswatching their forced labour he also saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen.	11 Al tempo poi che fu divenuto grande, Mosè uscì [dalla corte per recarsi] ai suoi fratelli e vide la loro afflizione, ed un egiziano che percoteva uno de' suoi fratelli Ebrei.
12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one in sight, he kil ed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Guardatosi attorno di qua e di là, visto che nessuno v'era presente, uccise quell'egiziano, e lo nascose nella sabbia.
13 On the following day he came back, and there were two Hebrews, fighting. He said to the man whowas in the wrong, 'What do you mean by hitting your kinsman?'	13 Uscito il giorno di poi, vide due Ebrei che litigavano e disse a quello che oltraggiava l'altro: «Perché percuoti il prossimo tuo?».
14 'And who appointed you', the man retorted, 'to be prince over us and judge? Do you intend to kil meas you kil ed the Egyptian?' Moses was frightened. 'Clearly that business has come to light,' he thought.	14 Rispose colui: «Chi ti ha messo come principe e giudice nostro? Vuoi forse uccidermi, come ieri uccidesti quell'egiziano?». Mosè s'intimorì, e disse: «Come s'è venuta a sapere questa cosa?».
15 When Pharaoh heard of the matter, he tried to put Moses to death, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. Hewent into Midianite territory and sat down beside a wel .	15 Il Faraone lo seppe, e cercava d'uccider Mosè, il quale, fuggito dalla sua presenza, prese stanza nella terra di Madian, e si fermò presso un pozzo.
16 Now there was a priest of Midian with seven daughters. They used to come to draw water and fil thetroughs to water their father's flock.	16 Ora, il sacerdote di Madian aveva sette figliuole, che vennero ad attinger acqua, ed empiti gli abbeveratoi volevano rinfrescare i greggi del loro padre.
17 Some shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses sprang to their help and watered their flock.	17 Ma sopravvennero dei pastori, che le discacciarono. Allora Mosè si fece avanti, prese le loro difese, e fece bere le loro pecore.
18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, 'Why are you back so early today?'	18 Tornate che furono a Raguel loro padre, questi disse: «Come mai siete tornate più presto del solito?».
19 'An Egyptian protected us from the shepherds,' they said, 'and he even drew water for us and wateredthe flock.'	19 Risposero: «Un egiziano ci ha dato aiuto contro i pastori, e per di più ha attinto l'acqua con noi, e dato da bere alle pecore».
20 'And where is he?' he asked his daughters. 'Why did you leave the man there? Ask him to eat with us.'	20 Allora disse: «Dov'è? Perchè l'avete lasciato andare? Chiamatelo, che prenda cibo con noi».
21 Moses agreed to stay on there with the man, who gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.	21 Mosè dunque fece patto d'abitare con lui, e prese in moglie Sefora sua figlia.
22 She gave birth to a son, whom he named Gershom 'because', he said, 'I am an alien in a foreign land.'	22 La quale gli partorì un figliuolo, ch'ei chiamò Gersam, dicendo: «Fui pellegrino in terra straniera». Poi ne partorì un altro, e lo chiamò Eliezer, dicendo: «Il Dio di mio padre, mio protettore, mi cavò dalle mani del Faraone».
23 During this long period the king of Egypt died. The Israelites, groaning in their slavery, cried out forhelp and from the depths of their slavery their cry came up to God.	23 Molto tempo appresso, morì il re dell'Egitto, e, gemendo i figli di Israele a causa dei lavori, alzaron le grida; e salirono a Dio queste grida dovute alle loro fatiche.
24 God heard their groaning; God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	24 Udì Dio il loro gemito, e si ricordò del patto che fece con Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe;
25 God saw the Israelites and took note.	25 il Signore riguardò ai figli d'Israele, e li riconobbe per suoi.
