NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 There was a man descended from Levi who had taken a woman of Levi as his wife.	1 Un hombre de la familia de Leví se casó con la hija de un levita.
2 She conceived and gave birth to a son and, seeing what a fine child he was, she kept him hidden forthree months.	2 La mujer concibió y dio a luz un hijo; y viendo que era muy hermoso, lo mantuvo escondido durante tres meses.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him; coating it with bitumen and pitch,she put the child inside and laid it among the reeds at the River's edge.	3 Cuando ya no pudo ocultarlo más tiempo, tomó una cesta de papiro y la impermeabilizó con betún y pez. Después puso en ella al niño y la dejó entre los juncos, a orillas del Nilo.
4 His sister took up position some distance away to see what would happen to him.	4 Pero la hermana del niño se quedó a una cierta distancia, para ver qué le sucedería.
5 Now Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe in the river, while her maids walked along the riverside.Among the reeds she noticed the basket, and she sent her maid to fetch it.	5 La hija del Faraón bajó al Nilo para bañarse, mientras sus doncellas se paseaban por la ribera. Al ver la cesta en medio de los juncos, mandó a su esclava que fuera a recogerla.
6 She opened it and saw the child: the baby was crying. Feeling sorry for it, she said, 'This is one of thelittle Hebrews.'	6 La abrió, y vio al niño que estaba llorando; y llena de compasión, exclamó: «Seguramente es un niño de los hebreos».
7 The child's sister then said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shal I go and find you a nurse among the Hebrewwomen to nurse the child for you?'	7 Entonces la hermana del niño dijo a la hija del Faraón: «Quieres que vaya a buscarte entre las hebreas una nodriza para que te lo críe»?
8 'Yes,' said Pharaoh's daughter, and the girl went and cal ed the child's own mother.	8 «Sí», le respondió la hija del Faraón. La jovencita fue a llamar a la madre del niño,
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse it for me. I shal pay you myself fordoing so.' So the woman took the child away and nursed it.	9 y la hija del Faraón le dijo: «Llévate a este niño y críamelo; yo te lo voy a retribuir». La mujer lo tomó consigo y lo crió;
10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like a son; shenamed him Moses 'because', she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'	10 y cuando el niño creció, lo entregó a la hija del Faraón, que lo trató como a un hijo y le puso el nombre de Moisés, diciendo: «Sí, yo lo saqué de las aguas».
11 It happened one day, when Moses was grown up, that he went to see his kinsmen. While he waswatching their forced labour he also saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen.	11 Siendo ya un hombre, Moisés salió en cierta ocasión a visitar a sus hermanos, y observó los penosos trabajos a que estaban sometidos. También vio que un egipcio maltrataba a un hebreo, a uno de sus hermanos.
12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one in sight, he kil ed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Entonces dirigió una mirada a su alrededor, y como no divisó a nadie, mató al egipcio y lo escondió en la arena.
13 On the following day he came back, and there were two Hebrews, fighting. He said to the man whowas in the wrong, 'What do you mean by hitting your kinsman?'	13 Al día siguiente regresó y encontró a dos hebreos que se estaban pelando. «¿Por qué golpeas a tu compañero?» Preguntó el agresor.
14 'And who appointed you', the man retorted, 'to be prince over us and judge? Do you intend to kil meas you kil ed the Egyptian?' Moses was frightened. 'Clearly that business has come to light,' he thought.	14 Pero este le respondió: «¿Quién te ha constituido jefe o árbitro nuestro? ¿Acaso piensas matarme como mataste al egipcio?». Moisés sintió temor y pensó: «Por lo visto, el asunto ha trascendido».
15 When Pharaoh heard of the matter, he tried to put Moses to death, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. Hewent into Midianite territory and sat down beside a wel .	15 En efecto, el Faraón se enteró de lo sucedido, y buscó a Moisés para matarlo. Pero este huyó del Faraón, y llegó al país de Madián. Allí se sentó junto a un pozo.
16 Now there was a priest of Midian with seven daughters. They used to come to draw water and fil thetroughs to water their father's flock.	16 El sacerdote de Madián tenía siete hijas. Ellas fueron a sacar agua para llenar los bebederos y dar de beber al rebaño de su padre.
17 Some shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses sprang to their help and watered their flock.	17 De pronto llegaron unos pastores y las echaron. Moisés, poniéndose de pie, salió en defensa de ellas y dio de beber a sus ovejas.
18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, 'Why are you back so early today?'	18 Cuando llegaron al lugar donde estaba Reuel, su padre, este les preguntó: ¿Por qué hoy han vuelto tan pronto?».
19 'An Egyptian protected us from the shepherds,' they said, 'and he even drew water for us and wateredthe flock.'	19 «Un hombre, un egipcio, le explicaron ellas, nos libró de los pastores, nos sacó agua, y hasta dio de beber al rebaño».
20 'And where is he?' he asked his daughters. 'Why did you leave the man there? Ask him to eat with us.'	20 «¿Dónde está ese hombre?», preguntó él a sus hijas. «¿Por qué lo dejaron allí? Invítenlo a comer».
21 Moses agreed to stay on there with the man, who gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.	21 Moisés accedió a quedarse en casa de aquel hombre, y este le dio como esposa a su hija Sipora.
22 She gave birth to a son, whom he named Gershom 'because', he said, 'I am an alien in a foreign land.'	22 Ella tuvo un hijo, y Moisés lo llamó Gersón, porque dijo: «Fui un emigrante en tierra extranjera».
23 During this long period the king of Egypt died. The Israelites, groaning in their slavery, cried out forhelp and from the depths of their slavery their cry came up to God.	23 Pasó mucho tiempo y, mientras tanto, murió el rey de Egipto. Los israelitas, que gemían en la esclavitud, hicieron oír su clamor, y ese clamor llegó hasta Dios, desde el fondo de su esclavitud.
24 God heard their groaning; God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	24 Dios escuchó sus gemidos y se acordó de su alianza con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
