Exodus 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 There was a man descended from Levi who had taken a woman of Levi as his wife.	1 Un homme de la maison de Lévi s'en alla prendre pour femme une fille de Lévi.
2 She conceived and gave birth to a son and, seeing what a fine child he was, she kept him hidden forthree months.	2 Celle-ci conçut et enfanta un fils. Voyant combien il était beau, elle le dissimula pendant trois mois.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him; coating it with bitumen and pitch,she put the child inside and laid it among the reeds at the River's edge.	3 Ne pouvant le dissimuler plus longtemps, elle prit pour lui une corbeille de papyrus qu'elle enduisitde bitume et de poix, y plaça l'enfant et la déposa dans les roseaux sur la rive du Fleuve.
4 His sister took up position some distance away to see what would happen to him.	4 La soeur de l'enfant se posta à distance pour voir ce qui lui adviendrait.
5 Now Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe in the river, while her maids walked along the riverside.Among the reeds she noticed the basket, and she sent her maid to fetch it.	5 Or la fille de Pharaon descendit au Fleuve pour s'y baigner, tandis que ses servantes se promenaientsur la rive du Fleuve. Elle aperçut la corbeille parmi les roseaux et envoya sa servante la prendre.
6 She opened it and saw the child: the baby was crying. Feeling sorry for it, she said, 'This is one of thelittle Hebrews.'	6 Elle l'ouvrit et vit l'enfant: c'était un garçon qui pleurait. Touchée de compassion pour lui, elle dit:"C'est un des petits Hébreux."
7 The child's sister then said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shal I go and find you a nurse among the Hebrewwomen to nurse the child for you?'	7 La soeur de l'enfant dit alors à la fille de Pharaon: "Veux-tu que j'aille te chercher, parmi les femmesdes Hébreux, une nourrice qui te nourrira cet enfant? --
8 'Yes,' said Pharaoh's daughter, and the girl went and cal ed the child's own mother.	8 Va", lui répondit la fille de Pharaon. La jeune fille alla donc chercher la mère de l'enfant.
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse it for me. I shal pay you myself fordoing so.' So the woman took the child away and nursed it.	9 La fille de Pharaon lui dit: "Emmène cet enfant et nourris-le moi, je te donnerai moi-même tonsalaire." Alors la femme emporta l'enfant et le nourrit.
10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like a son; shenamed him Moses 'because', she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'	10 Quand l'enfant eut grandi, elle le ramena à la fille de Pharaon qui le traita comme un fils et lui donnale nom de Moïse, car, disait-elle, "je l'ai tiré des eaux."
11 It happened one day, when Moses was grown up, that he went to see his kinsmen. While he waswatching their forced labour he also saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen.	11 Il advint, en ces jours-là, que Moïse, qui avait grandi, alla voir ses frères. Il vit les corvéesauxquelles ils étaient astreints; il vit aussi un Egyptien qui frappait un Hébreu, un de ses frères.
12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one in sight, he kil ed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Il se tourna de-ci de-là, et voyant qu'il n'y avait personne, il tua l'Egyptien et le cacha dans le sable.
13 On the following day he came back, and there were two Hebrews, fighting. He said to the man whowas in the wrong, 'What do you mean by hitting your kinsman?'	13 Le jour suivant, il revint alors que deux Hébreux se battaient. "Pourquoi frappes-tu toncompagnon?" Dit-il à l'agresseur.
14 'And who appointed you', the man retorted, 'to be prince over us and judge? Do you intend to kil meas you kil ed the Egyptian?' Moses was frightened. 'Clearly that business has come to light,' he thought.	14 Celui-ci répondit: "Qui t'a constitué notre chef et notre juge? Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tuél'Egyptien?" Moïse effrayé se dit: "Certainement l'affaire se sait."
15 When Pharaoh heard of the matter, he tried to put Moses to death, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. Hewent into Midianite territory and sat down beside a wel .	15 Pharaon entendit parler de cette affaire et chercha à tuer Moïse. Moïse s'enfuit loin de Pharaon; il serendit au pays de Madiân et s'assit auprès d'un puits.
16 Now there was a priest of Midian with seven daughters. They used to come to draw water and fil thetroughs to water their father's flock.	16 Or un prêtre de Madiân avait sept filles. Elles vinrent puiser et remplir les auges pour abreuver lepetit bétail de leur père.
17 Some shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses sprang to their help and watered their flock.	17 Des bergers survinrent et les chassèrent. Moïse se leva, vint à leur secours et abreuva le petit bétail.
18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, 'Why are you back so early today?'	18 Elles revinrent auprès de Réuel, leur père, qui leur dit: "Pourquoi revenez-vous si tôt aujourd'hui?"
19 'An Egyptian protected us from the shepherds,' they said, 'and he even drew water for us and wateredthe flock.'	19 Elles lui dirent: "Un Egyptien nous a tirées des mains des bergers; il a même puisé pour nous etabreuvé le petit bétail. --
20 'And where is he?' he asked his daughters. 'Why did you leave the man there? Ask him to eat with us.'	20 Et où est-il? Demanda-t-il à ses filles. Pourquoi donc avez-vous abandonné cet homme? Invitez-le àmanger."
21 Moses agreed to stay on there with the man, who gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.	21 Moïse consentit à s'établir auprès de cet homme qui lui donna sa fille, Cippora.
22 She gave birth to a son, whom he named Gershom 'because', he said, 'I am an alien in a foreign land.'	22 Elle mit au monde un fils qu'il nomma Gershom car, dit-il, "je suis un immigré en terre étrangère."
23 During this long period the king of Egypt died. The Israelites, groaning in their slavery, cried out forhelp and from the depths of their slavery their cry came up to God.	23 Au cours de cette longue période, le roi d'Egypte mourut. Les Israélites, gémissant de leur servitude,crièrent, et leur appel à l'aide monta vers Dieu, du fond de leur servitude.
24 God heard their groaning; God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	24 Dieu entendit leur gémissement; Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
25 God saw the Israelites and took note.	25 Dieu vit les Israélites et Dieu connut...
