Exodus 18

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard al about what God had done for Moses andfor Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Ietro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, intese tutto quello che Dio aveva fatto a Mosè e ad Israele, suo popolo: come il Signore aveva fatto uscire Israele dall'Egitto.
2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,	2 Allora Ietro prese Zippora, moglie di Mosè, che prima egli aveva rinviata,
3 with her two sons; one of them was cal ed Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreignland,'	3 con i suoi due figli; il nome di uno era Gherson, poiché aveva detto: "Sono stato ospite in terra straniera",
4 and the other cal ed Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh'ssword.'	4 e il nome dell'altro Eliezer, perché: "Il Dio di mio padre è venuto in mio aiuto, e mi ha liberato dalla spada del faraone".
5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where hewas encamped, at the mountain of God.	5 Ietro, suocero di Mosè, venne da Mosè, con la moglie e i figli di lui, nel deserto dove era accampato, al monte di Dio.
6 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'	6 E fece dire a Mosè: "Sono io, Ietro, tuo suocero, che vengo a te con tua moglie, e i tuoi due figli".
7 So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each hadasked how the other was they went into the tent.	7 Mosè uscì incontro a suo suocero, si prosternò e lo baciò. Si interrogarono vicendevolmente sulla salute ed entrarono nella tenda.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law al about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians forIsrael's sake, and about al the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescuedthem.	8 Mosè raccontò a suo suocero tutto quello che il Signore aveva fatto al faraone e all'Egitto per causa d'Israele, tutte le tribolazioni che avevano trovato nel cammino; dalle quali il Signore li aveva salvati.
9 And Jethro was delighted at al Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutchesof the Egyptians.	9 Ietro si rallegrò per tutto il bene che il Signore aveva fatto a Israele, per averlo salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto.
10 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptiansand the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!	10 Ietro disse: "Benedetto sia il Signore, che vi ha salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto e dalla mano del faraone: egli ha salvato il popolo dalla mano dell'Egitto.
11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than al other gods. . .'	11 Ora so che il Signore è il più grande di tutti gli dèi, per quanto ha fatto agli Egiziani che si comportarono con arroganza contro gli Ebrei".
12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and al the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.	12 Poi Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì un olocausto e un sacrificio di comunione in onore di Dio, e venne Aronne con tutti gli anziani d'Israele a mangiare il cibo con il suocero di Mosè davanti a Dio.
13 On the fol owing day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people werestanding round him from morning til evening.	13 Il giorno dopo Mosè si sedette per giudicare il popolo, e il popolo stette con Mosè dal mattino alla sera.
14 Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people,why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning til evening?'	14 Il suocero di Mosè vide tutto quello che egli faceva al popolo e disse: "Che cosa è quello che fai al popolo? Perché siedi tu solo, e tutto il popolo sta con te dal mattino alla sera?".
15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.	15 Mosè disse al suo suocero: "Il popolo viene da me per consultare Dio.
16 When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other andmake God's statutes and laws known to them.'	16 Quando c'è qualcosa tra di loro vengono da me, e io giudico tra l'uno e l'altro: faccio conoscere i decreti di Dio e le sue leggi".
17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.	17 Il suocero di Mosè gli disse: "Non è bene quello che fai.
18 You wil only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. Youcannot do it all yourself.	18 Ti esaurirai, sia tu che questo popolo che è con te, perché è troppo pesante per te: non puoi farlo da solo.
19 Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent thepeople to God, to lay their cases before God,	19 Ora ascoltami: ti consiglio e Dio sia con te! Tu starai al posto del popolo davanti a Dio e porta tu a Dio le loro questioni.
20 and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to fol ow and how theyought to behave.	20 Informali dei decreti e delle leggi e fa' loro conoscere il cammino da percorrere e quello che dovranno fare.
21 At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who aretrustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,	21 Invece prenderai tra tutto il popolo uomini di virtù che temono Dio, uomini veritieri che odiano il guadagno, e li porrai su di loro come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
22 and make them the people's permanent judges. They wil refer al important matters to you, but alminor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.	22 Giudicheranno il popolo per tutto il tempo: ogni questione importante la porteranno a te, ma giudicheranno essi ogni questione piccola. Così alleggerisci te ed essi ti sollevano.
23 If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all thesepeople wil go home satisfied.'	23 Se farai questo, e che Dio te lo ordini, potrai durarla, e anche tutto questo popolo rientrerà presso di sé in pace".
24 Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.	24 Mosè ascoltò la voce del suo suocero e fece quello che aveva detto:
25 Moses chose capable men from al Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads ofthousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.	25 Mosè scelse uomini di virtù da tutto Israele e li costituì come capi sul popolo, capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
26 These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decidedminor matters themselves.	26 Essi giudicavano il popolo per tutto il tempo: le questioni importanti le portavano a Mosè, mentre essi stessi giudicavano tutte le questioni piccole.
27 Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.	27 Poi Mosè congedò suo suocero, che se ne andò nella sua terra.
