Exodus 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard al about what God had done for Moses andfor Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Jetró, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, se enteró de lo que había hecho Dios en favor de Moisés y de Israel, su pueblo, y cómo Yahveh había sacado a Israel de Egipto.
2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,	2 Entonces Jetró, suegro de Moisés, tomó a Séfora, mujer de Moisés, a la que Moisés había despedido,
3 with her two sons; one of them was cal ed Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreignland,'	3 y a sus hijos; el uno se llamaba Guersom, pues Moisés dijo: «Forastero soy en tierra extraña,»
4 and the other cal ed Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh'ssword.'	4 y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, pues dijo Moisés: «El Dios de mi padre es mi protector y me ha librado de la espada de Faraón.»
5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where hewas encamped, at the mountain of God.	5 Llegó, pues, Jetró, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de Moisés, al desierto, donde estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios.
6 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'	6 Y dijo a Moisés: Yo, Jetró, tu suegro, vengo a ti con tu mujer y sus dos hijos.»
7 So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each hadasked how the other was they went into the tent.	7 Moisés salió al encuentro de su suegro, se postró y le besó. Se saludaron ambos y entraron en la tienda.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law al about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians forIsrael's sake, and about al the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescuedthem.	8 Moisés contó a su suegro todo lo que Yahveh había hecho a Faraón y a los egipcios, en favor de Israel; todos los trabajos sufridos en el camino y cómo Yahveh les había librado de ellos.
9 And Jethro was delighted at al Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutchesof the Egyptians.	9 Jetró se alegró de todo el bien que Yahveh había hecho a Israel, librándole de la mano de los egipcios.
10 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptiansand the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!	10 Y dijo Jetró: «¡Bendito sea Yahveh, que os ha librado de la mano de los egipcios y de la mano de Faraón y ha salvado al pueblo del poder de los egipcios!
11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than al other gods. . .'	11 Ahora reconozco que Yahveh es más grande que todos los dioses...»
12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and al the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.	12 Después Jetró, suegro de Moisés, ofreció un holocausto y sacrificios a Dios; y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a comer con el suegro de Moisés en presencia de Dios.
13 On the fol owing day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people werestanding round him from morning til evening.	13 Al día siguiente, se sentó Moisés para juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo ante Moisés desde la mañana hasta la noche.
14 Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people,why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning til evening?'	14 El suegro de Moisés vio el trabajo que su yerno se imponía por el pueblo, y dijo: «¿Cómo haces eso con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo haciendo que todo el pueblo tenga que permanecer delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la noche?»
15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.	15 Contestó Moisés a su suegro: «Es que el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.
16 When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other andmake God's statutes and laws known to them.'	16 Cuando tienen un pleito, vienen a mí; yo dicto sentencia entre unos y otros, y les doy a conocer los preceptos de Dios y sus leyes.»
17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.	17 Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: «No está bien lo que estás haciendo.
18 You wil only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. Youcannot do it all yourself.	18 Acabarás agotándote, tú y este pueblo que está contigo; porque este trabajo es superior a tus fuerzas; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.
19 Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent thepeople to God, to lay their cases before God,	19 Así que escúchame; te voy a dar un consejo, y Dios estará contigo. Sé tú el representante del pueblo delante de Dios y lleva ante Dios sus asuntos.
20 and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to fol ow and how theyought to behave.	20 Enséñales los preceptos y las leyes, dales a conocer el camino que deben seguir y las obras que han de practicar.
21 At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who aretrustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,	21 Pero elige de entre el pueblo hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, hombres fieles e incorruptibles, y ponlos al frente del pueblo como jefes de mil, jefes de ciento, jefes de cincuenta y jefes de diez.
22 and make them the people's permanent judges. They wil refer al important matters to you, but alminor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.	22 Ellos juzgarán al pueblo en todo momento; te presentarán a ti los asuntos más graves, pero en los asuntos de menor importancia, juzgarán ellos. Así se aliviará tu carga, pues ellos te ayudarán a llevarla.
23 If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all thesepeople wil go home satisfied.'	23 Si haces esto, Dios te comunicará sus órdenes, tú podrás resistir, y todo este pueblo por su parte podrá volver en paz a su lugar.»
24 Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.	24 Escuchó Moisés la voz de su suegro e hizo todo lo que le había dicho.
25 Moses chose capable men from al Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads ofthousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.	25 Eligió, pues, hombres capaces de entre todo Israel, y los puso al frente del pueblo, como jefes de mil, jefes de ciento, jefes de cincuenta, y jefes de diez.
26 These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decidedminor matters themselves.	26 Estos juzgaban al pueblo en todo momento; los asuntos graves se los presentaban a Moisés, mas en todos los asuntos menores juzgaban por sí mismos.
27 Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.	27 Después Moisés despidió a su suegro, que se volvió a su tierra.
