Exodus 18

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard al about what God had done for Moses andfor Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 Jetró, sacerdote de Madián y suegro de Moisés, se enteró de todo lo que Dios había hecho en favor de Moisés y de su pueblo Israel, cuando el Señor hizo salir a Israel de Egipto.
2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,	2 Entonces partió llevando consigo a Sipora, la esposa de Moisés –que este había hecho regresar a su casa–
3 with her two sons; one of them was cal ed Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreignland,'	3 y a sus dos nietos. uno de ellos se llamaba Gersón, porque Moisés había dicho: «Fui un emigrante en tierra extranjera»;
4 and the other cal ed Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh'ssword.'	4 y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque Moisés había dicho: «El Dios de mi padre es mi ayuda y me libró de la espada del Faraón».
5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where hewas encamped, at the mountain of God.	5 Cuando Jetró, que venía con la esposa y los hijos de su yerno, llegó al desierto donde había acampado Moisés, junto a la montaña de Dios,
6 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'	6 se hizo anunciar con estas palabras: «Aquí está Jetró, tu suegro, que viene a verte acompañado de tu esposa y de tus hijos».
7 So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each hadasked how the other was they went into the tent.	7 Moisés salió enseguida al encuentro de su suegro, le hizo una profunda reverencia y lo besó. Después de saludarse mutuamente, entraron en la carpa.
8 Moses then told his father-in-law al about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians forIsrael's sake, and about al the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescuedthem.	8 Moisés relató a su suegro todo lo que el Señor había hecho al Faraón y a los egipcios a causa de Israel, las dificultades con que habían tropezado en el camino, y cómo el Señor los había librado.
9 And Jethro was delighted at al Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutchesof the Egyptians.	9 Jetró manifestó su alegría por todo el bien que el Señor había dispensado a Israel, librándolo del poder de Egipto.
10 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptiansand the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!	10 y exclamó: «Bendito sea el Señor que los libró de las manos de los egipcios y de las manos del Faraón.
11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than al other gods. . .'	11 Ahora sé que el Señor es más grande que todos los dioses, porque él salvó a su pueblo del poder de los egipcios, a causa de la arrogancia con que estos lo trataron».
12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and al the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.	12 Luego Jetró ofreció un holocausto y sacrificios a Dios, y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a participar de la comida con el suegro de Moisés, en la presencia de Dios.
13 On the fol owing day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people werestanding round him from morning til evening.	13 Al día siguiente, Moisés se sentó para juzgar los asuntos que le presentaba el pueblo, mientras la gente permanecía de pie junto a él, de la mañana a la noche.
14 Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people,why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning til evening?'	14 Su suegro, al ver todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, le preguntó: «¿Qué significa eso que haces con el pueblo? ¿Por qué lo haces tú solo, mientras la gente se queda de pie junto a ti, de la mañana a la noche?
15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.	15 Moisés respondió a su suegro: Esa gente acude a mí para consultar a Dios.
16 When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other andmake God's statutes and laws known to them.'	16 Cuando tienen un pleito, acuden a mí. Entonces yo decido quién tiene razón, y les doy a conocer las disposiciones y las instrucciones de Dios».
17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.	17 El Suegro de Moisés le dijo: «Lo que haces no está bien.
18 You wil only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. Youcannot do it all yourself.	18 Así quedarán completamente agotados, tú y toda esa gente que está contigo. Esa tarea es demasiado pesada para ti, y tú solo no puedes realizarla.
19 Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent thepeople to God, to lay their cases before God,	19 Ahora escúchame. Yo te daré un consejo, y que Dios esté contigo. Tú debes representar al pueblo delante de Dios y exponerle los asuntos de la gente.
20 and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to fol ow and how theyought to behave.	20 Al mismo tiempo, tienes que inculcarles los preceptos y las instrucciones de Dios, y enseñarles el camino que deben seguir y la manera cómo deben comportarse.
21 At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who aretrustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,	21 Pero además tienes que elegir, entre todo el pueblo, a algunos hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, dignos de confianza e insobornables, para constituirlos jefes del pueblo: jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez personas.
22 and make them the people's permanent judges. They wil refer al important matters to you, but alminor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.	22 Ellos administrarán justicia al pueblo permanentemente. Si hay algún caso difícil, que te lo traigan a ti, pero que juzguen por sí mismos los casos de menor importancia. De esa manera, se aliviará tu carga, y ellos la compartirán contigo.
23 If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all thesepeople wil go home satisfied.'	23 Si obras así, y Dios te da sus órdenes, tú podrás resistir y toda esa gente regresará en paz a sus hogares».
24 Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.	24 Moisés siguió el consejo de su suegro y puso en práctica todo lo que él le había indicado.
25 Moses chose capable men from al Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads ofthousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.	25 Entre todos los israelitas, eligió a algunas personas capaces, y las puso como jefes del pueblo: jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez personas,
26 These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decidedminor matters themselves.	26 que administraban justicia al pueblo permanentemente. Ellos presentaban a Moisés los asuntos más difíciles, y juzgaban por sí mismos las cuestiones de menor importancia.
27 Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.	27 Luego Moisés despidió a su suegro, y este regresó a su país.
