1 That night the king could not sleep; he called for the Record Book, or Annals, to be brought and read tohim.	1 Mais cette nuit-là, le roi n’arrivait pas à s’endormir. Il se fit apporter le Livre des mémoires, les Chroniques, et on en fit la lecture devant le roi.
2 They contained an account of how Mordecai had denounced Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king'seunuchs serving as Guards of the Threshold, who had plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus.	2 On tomba sur le passage où l’on racontait comment Mardochée avait dénoncé les deux eunuques du roi, Bigtan et Térech, les gardiens de la Porte qui avaient voulu assassiner le roi Assuérus.
3 'And what honour and dignity', the king asked, 'was conferred on Mordecai for this?' 'Nothing has beendone for him,' the gentlemen-in-waiting replied.	3 Le roi dit alors: "A-t-on fait quelque chose de spécial pour Mardochée? Lui a-t-on donné de l’avancement?” Les serviteurs du roi répondirent: "On n’a rien fait pour lui.”
4 The king then said, 'Who is outside in the antechamber?' Haman had, that very moment, entered theouter antechamber of the private apartments, to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the gal ows which hehad just put up for the purpose.	4 Alors le roi dit: "Qui est dans la cour?” Et justement c’était Aman qui franchissait la cour extérieure du palais royal pour demander au roi de faire pendre Mardochée à la potence qu’il avait dressée pour lui.
5 So the king's gentlemen-in-waiting replied, 'It is Haman out in the antechamber.' 'Bring him in,' the kingsaid,	5 Les serviteurs du roi répondirent: "C’est Aman qui est dans la cour.” Le roi dit: "Faites-le entrer.”
6 and, as soon as Haman came in, went on to ask, 'What is the right way to treat a man whom the kingwishes to honour?' 'Whom', thought Haman, 'would the king wish to honour, if not me?'	6 Aman entra et le roi lui demanda: "Que peut-on faire pour un homme que le roi veut honorer?” Aman se dit en lui-même: "Quel autre que moi le roi pourrait-il bien honorer?”
7 So he replied, 'If the king wishes to honour someone,	7 Il répondit au roi: "Le roi veut-il honorer quelqu’un?
8 royal robes should be brought from the king's wardrobe, and a horse from the king's stable, sporting aroyal diadem on its head.	8 Qu’il fasse apporter un vêtement royal que le roi a porté, un cheval que le roi a monté et sur la tête duquel on a déjà placé une couronne royale.
9 The robes and horse should be entrusted to one of the noblest of the king's officers-of-state, who shouldthen array the man whom the king wishes to honour and lead him on horseback through the city square,proclaiming before him: "This is the way a man shall be treated whom the king wishes to honour." '	9 Qu’on remette le vêtement et le cheval à l’un des principaux ministres du roi, qu’on en habille l’homme que le roi veut honorer, qu’on le fasse monter sur le cheval et qu’on le fasse promener à travers toute la ville. Quelqu’un criera devant lui: Voici ce que l’on fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer.”
10 'Hurry,' the king said to Haman, 'take the robes and the horse, and do everything you have just said toMordecai the Jew, who works at the Chancel ery. On no account leave out anything that you have mentioned.'	10 Le roi dit alors à Aman: "Dépêche-toi, prends ce vêtement et le cheval comme tu l’as dit, et fais tout cela pour Mardochée, le Juif, qui est assis à la porte du roi. N’oublie rien de ce que tu as dit.”
11 So taking the robes and the horse, Haman arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through thecity square, proclaiming before him: 'This is the way a man shal be treated whom the king wishes to honour.'	11 Aman prit donc le vêtement et le cheval, il en fit revêtir Mardochée et le promena à cheval à travers la ville, et il proclamait devant lui: "Voici ce que l’on fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer!”
12 After this Mordecai returned to the Chancel ery, while Haman went hurrying home in dejection andcovering his face.	12 Puis Mardochée retourna à la Porte du roi, tandis qu’Aman rentrait chez lui précipitamment, honteux et la tête voilée.
13 He told his wife Zeresh and al his friends what had just happened. His wife Zeresh and his friendssaid, 'You are beginning to fal , and Mordecai to rise; if he is Jewish, you will never get the better of him. Withhim against you, your fal is certain.'	13 Aman raconta en détail à sa femme Zérech et à tous ses amis ce qui venait de se passer. Ces hommes sages lui dirent, ainsi que sa femme Zérech: "Si Mardochée est de race juive et que tu as commencé de basculer, tu ne pourras rien contre lui. Tu tomberas devant lui.”
14 While they were still talking, the king's officers arrived in a hurry to escort Haman to the banquet thatEsther was giving.	14 Ils parlaient encore lorsque les eunuques arrivèrent et prirent Aman avec eux pour le conduire au festin qu’Esther avait préparé.
