NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 It was the twelfth year of Nebuchadnezzar who reigned over the Assyrians in the great city of Nineveh.Arphaxad was then reigning over the Medes in Ecbatana.	1 C'était en la douzième année de Nabuchodonosor, qui régna sur les Assyriens à Ninive la grande ville.Arphaxad régnait alors sur les Mèdes à Ecbatane.
2 He surrounded this city with walls of dressed stones three cubits thick and six cubits long, making therampart seventy cubits high and fifty cubits wide.	2 Il entoura cette ville d'un mur d'enceinte en pierres de taille larges de trois coudées et longues de six,donnant au rempart une hauteur de 70 coudées et une largeur de 50.
3 At the gates he placed towers one hundred cubits high and, at the foundations, sixty cubits wide,	3 Aux portes il dressa des tours de cent coudées de haut sur 60 de large à leurs fondations,
4 the gates themselves being seventy cubits high and forty wide to al ow his forces to march out in a bodyand his infantry to parade freely.	4 les portes elles-mêmes s'élevant à 70 coudées avec une largeur de 40, ce qui permettait la sortie dugros de ses forces et le défilé de ses fantassins.
5 About this time King Nebuchadnezzar gave battle to King Arphaxad in the great plain lying in the territoryof Ragae.	5 Or, vers cette époque, le roi Nabuchodonosor livra bataille au roi Arphaxad dans la grande plainesituée sur le territoire de Ragau.
6 Supporting him were al the peoples from the highlands, all from the Euphrates and Tigris andHydaspes, and those from the plains who were subject to Arioch, king of the Elymaeans. Thus many nations hadmustered to take part in the battle of the Cheleoudites.	6 A ses côtés s'étaient rangés tous les peuples des montagnes, tous ceux de l'Euphrate, du Tigre, del'Hydaspe, et ceux des plaines soumises au roi des Elyméens Arioch. Ainsi de nombreux peuples serassemblèrent pour prendre part à la bataille des fils de Chéléoud.
7 Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians sent a message to al the inhabitants of Persia, to all theinhabitants of the western countries, Cilicia, Damascus, Lebanon, Anti-Lebanon, to al those along the coast,	7 Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, envoya un message à tous les habitants de la Perse, à tous ceuxde la région occidentale, de la Cilicie, de Damas, du Liban, de l'Anti-Liban, à tous ceux de la côte,
8 to the peoples of Carmel, Gilead, Upper Galilee, the great plain of Esdraelon,	8 aux peuplades du Carmel, de Galaad, de la Haute-Galilée, de la grande plaine d'Esdrelon,
9 to the people of Samaria and its outlying towns, to those beyond Jordan, as far away as Jerusalem,Bethany, Chelous, Kadesh, the river of Egypt, Tahpanhes, Rameses and the whole territory of Goshen,	9 aux gens de Samarie et des villes de sa dépendance, à ceux d'au-delà du Jourdain, jusqu'à Jérusalem,Batanée, Chélous, Cadès, le fleuve d'Egypte, Taphnès, Ramsès, tout le territoire de Goshèn,
10 beyond Tanis too and Memphis, and to al the inhabitants of Egypt as far as the frontiers of Ethiopia.	10 au-delà de Tanis et de Memphis, et à tous les habitants de l'Egypte jusqu'aux confins de l'Ethiopie.
11 But the inhabitants of these countries ignored the summons of Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyriansand did not ral y to him to make war. They were not afraid of him, since in their view he appeared isolated.Hence they sent his ambassadors back with nothing achieved and in disgrace.	11 Mais les habitants de ces contrées ne firent pas cas de l'appel de Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens,et ne se joignirent pas à lui pour faire campagne. Ils ne le craignaient pas car, à leurs yeux, il paraissait un isolé.Ils renvoyèrent donc ses messagers les mains vides et déshonorés.
12 Nebuchadnezzar was furious with al these countries. He swore by his throne and kingdom to takerevenge on al the territories of Cilicia, Damascus and Syria, of the Moabites and of the Ammonites, of Judaeaand Egypt as far as the limits of the two seas, and to ravage them with the sword.	12 Nabuchodonosor en éprouva une violente colère contre tous ces pays. Il jura par son trône et sonroyaume de se venger et de dévaster par l'épée tous les territoires de Cilicie, de Damascène, de Syrie, ainsi queceux de Moab, ceux des Ammonites, de Judée et d'Egypte, jusqu'aux frontières des deux mers.
13 In the seventeenth year, he gave battle with his whole army to King Arphaxad and in this battledefeated him. He routed Arphaxad's entire army and al his cavalry and chariots;	13 Avec ses propres forces, il livra bataille au roi Arphaxad en la dix-septième année et, dans cecombat, le vainquit. Il culbuta toute son armée, sa cavalerie, ses chars,
14 he occupied his towns and advanced on Ecbatana; he seized its towers and plundered its marketplaces, reducing its former magnificence to a mockery.	14 se soumit ses villes et parvint jusqu'à Ecbatane. 15 He later captured Arphaxad in the mountains of Ragae and, thrusting him through with his spears,destroyed him once and for al .	15 Puis il prit Arphaxad dans les montagnes de Ragau, le perça de ses javelots et l'exterminadéfinitivement.
16 He then retired with his troops and al who had joined forces with him: a vast horde of armed men.Then he and his army gave themselves up to carefree feasting for a hundred and twenty days.	16 Il s'en retourna ensuite avec ses troupes et l'immense foule qui s'était jointe à eux, incommensurablecohue d'hommes armés.
