NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The same day Tobit remembered the silver that he had left with Gabael at Rhages in Media	1 In quel giorno Tobi si ricordò del denaro che aveva depositato presso Gàbael in Rage di Media
2 and thought, 'I have come to the point of praying for death; I should do wel to cal my son Tobias andtel him about the money before I die.'	2 e pensò tra sé: "Ho invocato la morte. Perché non chiamare mio figlio Tobia e informarlo, prima di morire, di questa somma di denaro?".
3 He summoned his son Tobias and told him, 'When I die, give me an honourable burial. Honour yourmother, and never abandon her al the days of your life. Do al that she wants, and give her no reason for sorrow.	3 Chiamò dunque il figlio Tobia e quando questi si presentò, gli disse: "Quando sarò morto, dammi una onorevole sepoltura; onora tua madre e non abbandonarla finché vive; fa' ciò che è di suo gradimento e non contristare il suo cuore per nessun motivo.
4 Remember, my child, al the risks she ran for your sake when you were in her womb. And when shedies, bury her at my side in the same grave.	4 Ricordati, figlio, dei tanti pericoli che corse per te, quando eri nel suo seno. Quando morirà, dàlle sepoltura vicino a me in una medesima tomba.
5 'My child, be faithful to the Lord all your days. Never entertain the wil to sin or to transgress his laws.Do good works all the days of your life, never fol ow ways that are not upright;	5 Figlio, ricordati del Signore tutti i giorni della tua vita; non voler peccare né trasgredire i suoi precetti. Compi opere buone durante tutta la tua vita e non metterti nel cammino dell'ingiustizia.
6 for if you act in truthfulness, you wil be successful in al your actions, as everyone is who practises whatis upright.	6 Se fai il bene, riusciranno le tue imprese,
7 'Set aside part of your goods for almsgiving. Never turn your face from the poor and God will never turnhis from you.	7 come per tutti quelli che praticano la giustizia. Fa' l'elemosina di ciò che possiedi. Il tuo occhio non sia sprezzante nel fare l'elemosina. Non distogliere lo sguardo dal povero e Dio non distoglierà il suo sguardo da te.
8 Measure your alms by what you have; if you have much, give more; if you have little, do not be afraid togive less in alms.	8 Fa' l'elemosina in proporzione di ciò che possiedi; se hai poco, non temere di dare elemosina secondo quel poco:
9 So doing, you wil lay up for yourself a great treasure for the day of necessity.	9 così ti metti in serbo un buon tesoro per il giorno in cui sarai nella strettezza,
10 For almsgiving delivers from death and saves people from passing down to darkness.	10 poiché l'elemosina libera dalla morte e impedisce di cadere nelle tenebre.
11 Almsgiving is a most effective offering for all those who do it in the presence of the Most High.	11 Per tutti quelli che la compiono, l'elemosina è una bella offerta agli occhi dell'Altissimo.
12 'My child, avoid al loose conduct. Choose a wife of your father's stock. Do not take a foreign wifeoutside your father's tribe, because we are the children of the prophets. Remember Noah, Abraham, Isaac andJacob, our ancestors from the beginning. Al of them took wives from their own kindred, and they were blessed intheir children, and their race wil inherit the earth.	12 Guardati, o figlio, da ogni fornicazione e prima di tutto prendi moglie dalla stirpe dei tuoi antenati; non prendere una moglie straniera che non sia della tribù di tuo padre, perché noi siamo figli di profeti. Ricordati, figlio, che già dai tempi antichi i nostri antenati Noè, Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, tutti presero moglie fra i loro parenti e furono benedetti nei loro figli e la loro discendenza avrà in eredità la terra.
13 You, too, my child, must love your own brothers; never presume to despise your brothers, the sonsand daughters of your people; choose your wife from among them. For pride brings ruin and much worry;idleness causes need and poverty, for the mother of famine is idleness.	13 Ora, figlio, ama i tuoi parenti e non crederti da più di essi, figli e figlie del tuo popolo, disdegnando di prendere moglie tra di essi; perché l'orgoglio è causa di rovina e di grande inquietudine; l'incuria porta all'indigenza ed alla miseria, perché l'ignavia è madre della fame.
14 'Do not keep back until next day the wages of those who work for you; pay them at once. If you serveGod you will be rewarded. Be careful, my child, in al you do, wel -disciplined in al your behaviour.	14 Non ritenere presso di te la mercede di nessun operaio, ma consegnagliela subito; se servi Dio, egli ti ricompenserà. Sta' attento, figlio, a tutto ciò che fai e sii ben educato in ogni tuo comportamento.
15 Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Do not drink wine to the point of drunkenness; donot let excess be your travel ing companion.	15 Non fare a nessuno ciò che non piace a te. Non bere vino fino ad ubriacarti; che l'ubriachezza non ti accompagni nel tuo cammino.
16 'Give your bread to those who are hungry, and your clothes to those who lack clothing. Of whateveryou own in plenty, devote a proportion to almsgiving; and when you give alms, do it ungrudgingly.	16 Da' il tuo pane a chi ha fame e fa' parte dei tuoi vestiti agl'ignudi. Da' in elemosina quanto ti sopravanza; che il tuo sguardo non sia malevolo quando fai l'elemosina.
17 Be generous with bread and wine on the graves of upright people, but not for the sinner.	17 Offri il tuo pane e versa il tuo vino sulla tomba dei giusti e non darlo ai peccatori.
18 'Ask advice of every wise person; never scorn any profitable advice.	18 Prendi consiglio da ogni persona assennata e non disprezzare nessun consiglio utile.
19 Bless the Lord God in everything; beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes totheir end. For wisdom is not the property of every nation; their desire for what is good is conferred by the Lord. Athis will he lifts up or he casts down to the depths of the dwelling of the dead. So now, my child, remember theseprecepts and never let them fade from your heart.	19 In ogni circostanza benedici il Signore Dio e chiedigli di appianare le tue vie e che giungano a buon fine tutti i tuoi passi ed i tuoi progetti, poiché nessun popolo possiede la saggezza, ma è il Signore che concede ogni bene secondo il suo volere o umilia fino al profondo dell'abisso. Dunque, figlio, ricordati di queste norme e non si cancellino dalla tua memoria.
20 'Now, my child, I must tell you I have left ten talents of silver with Gabael son of Gabrias, at Rhages inMedia.	20 Ora, figlio, ti faccio sapere che ho depositato dieci talenti d'argento presso Gàbael, figlio di Gabri, in Rage di Media.
21 Do not be afraid, my child, if we have grown poor. You have great wealth if you fear God, if you shun every kind of sin and if you do what is pleasing to the Lord your God.'	21 Non temere, o figlio, se siamo poveri; avrai grandi ricchezze, se temerai Dio, se fuggirai da ogni peccato e farai ciò che è gradito al Signore tuo Dio".
