NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The same day Tobit remembered the silver that he had left with Gabael at Rhages in Media	1 Aquel día, Tobit se acordó del dinero que había dejado en depósito a Gabael, en Ragués de Media,
2 and thought, 'I have come to the point of praying for death; I should do wel to cal my son Tobias andtel him about the money before I die.'	2 y pensó: «Ya que he pedido la muerte, haría bien en llamar a mi hijo Tobías para hablarle de ese dinero antes de morir».
3 He summoned his son Tobias and told him, 'When I die, give me an honourable burial. Honour yourmother, and never abandon her al the days of your life. Do al that she wants, and give her no reason for sorrow.	3 Entonces llamó a su hijo Tobías y, cuando este se presentó, le dijo: «Entiérrame dignamente. Honra a tu madre, y no la abandones ningún día de su vida. Trata de complacerla y no la entristezcas.
4 Remember, my child, al the risks she ran for your sake when you were in her womb. And when shedies, bury her at my side in the same grave.	4 Acuérdate, hijo mío, de todos los peligros a que estuvo expuesta por tu causa, mientras te llevaba en su seno. Y cuando muera, entiérrala junto a mí en la misma tumba.
5 'My child, be faithful to the Lord all your days. Never entertain the wil to sin or to transgress his laws.Do good works all the days of your life, never fol ow ways that are not upright;	5 Acuérdate del Señor todos los días de tu vida, hijo mío, y no peques deliberadamente ni quebrantes sus mandamientos. Realiza obras de justicia todos los días de tu vida y no sigas los caminos de la injusticia.
6 for if you act in truthfulness, you wil be successful in al your actions, as everyone is who practises whatis upright.	6 Porque si vives conforme a la verdad, te irá bien en todas tus obras
7 'Set aside part of your goods for almsgiving. Never turn your face from the poor and God will never turnhis from you.	7 como a todos los que practican la justicia. Da la limosna de tus bienes y no lo hagas de mala gana. No apartes tu rostro del pobre y el Señor no apartará su rostro de ti.
8 Measure your alms by what you have; if you have much, give more; if you have little, do not be afraid togive less in alms.	8 Da limosna según la medida de tus posibilidades: si tienes poco, no temas dar de lo poco que tienes.
9 So doing, you wil lay up for yourself a great treasure for the day of necessity.	9 Así acumularás un buen tesoro para el día de la necesidad.
10 For almsgiving delivers from death and saves people from passing down to darkness.	10 Porque la limosna libra de la muerte e impide caer en las tinieblas:
11 Almsgiving is a most effective offering for all those who do it in the presence of the Most High.	11 la limosna es, para todos los que la hacen, una ofrenda valiosa a los ojos del Altísimo.
12 'My child, avoid al loose conduct. Choose a wife of your father's stock. Do not take a foreign wifeoutside your father's tribe, because we are the children of the prophets. Remember Noah, Abraham, Isaac andJacob, our ancestors from the beginning. Al of them took wives from their own kindred, and they were blessed intheir children, and their race wil inherit the earth.	12 Cuídate, hijo mío, de toda unión ilegítima y, sobre todo, elige una mujer del linaje de tus padres. No tomes por esposa a una extranjera, que no pertenezca a la tribu de tu padre, porque nosotros somos hijos de profetas. Acuérdate, hijo mío, de Noé, de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob, nuestros antiguos padres: ellos eligieron sus esposas entre las mujeres de sus parientes. Por eso fueron bendecidos en sus hijos y su descendencia poseerá la tierra en herencia.
13 You, too, my child, must love your own brothers; never presume to despise your brothers, the sonsand daughters of your people; choose your wife from among them. For pride brings ruin and much worry;idleness causes need and poverty, for the mother of famine is idleness.	13 Por lo tanto, hijo mío, prefiere a tus hermanos; no te muestres orgulloso con los hijos y las hijas de tu pueblo, rehusando tomar una esposa entre ellos. Porque el orgullo acarrea la ruina y un gran desorden, y la ociosidad lleva a la decadencia y a la miseria; ella es, en efecto, madre de la penuria.
14 'Do not keep back until next day the wages of those who work for you; pay them at once. If you serveGod you will be rewarded. Be careful, my child, in al you do, wel -disciplined in al your behaviour.	14 No retengas hasta el día siguiente el salario de un trabajador; retribúyele inmediatamente y, si sirves a Dios, él te lo retribuirá. Hijo mío, vigila todas tus acciones y muéstrate siempre educado.
15 Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Do not drink wine to the point of drunkenness; donot let excess be your travel ing companion.	15 No hagas a nadie lo que no te agrada a ti. No bebas hasta embriagarte y que la embriaguez no te acompañe en el camino.
16 'Give your bread to those who are hungry, and your clothes to those who lack clothing. Of whateveryou own in plenty, devote a proportion to almsgiving; and when you give alms, do it ungrudgingly.	16 Comparte tu pan con los que tienen hambre y tus vestidos con los que están desnudos. Da limosna de todo lo que te sobra y no lo hagas de mala gana.
17 Be generous with bread and wine on the graves of upright people, but not for the sinner.	17 Ofrece tu pan sobre la tumba de los justos, pero no lo des a los pecadores.
18 'Ask advice of every wise person; never scorn any profitable advice.	18 Pide consejo a las personas sensatas y no desprecies un buen consejo.
19 Bless the Lord God in everything; beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes totheir end. For wisdom is not the property of every nation; their desire for what is good is conferred by the Lord. Athis will he lifts up or he casts down to the depths of the dwelling of the dead. So now, my child, remember theseprecepts and never let them fade from your heart.	19 En cualquier circunstancia bendice al Señor, tu Dios; pídele que dirija tus pasos y que todos tus caminos y todos tus proyectos lleguen a feliz término. Porque ningún pueblo posee la sabiduría, sino que es el Señor el que da todos los bienes: él humilla a quien quiere, hasta lo más profundo del Abismo. Hijo mío, acuérdate de estos preceptos, y que nunca se borren de tu corazón.
20 'Now, my child, I must tell you I have left ten talents of silver with Gabael son of Gabrias, at Rhages inMedia.	20 Y ahora, quiero hacerte saber que yo dejé en depósito a Gabael, hijo de Gabrí, en Ragués de Media, diez talentos de plata.
21 Do not be afraid, my child, if we have grown poor. You have great wealth if you fear God, if you shun every kind of sin and if you do what is pleasing to the Lord your God.'	21 No te preocupes de que nos hayamos empobrecido. Tú tienes una riqueza muy grande si temes a Dios, si evitas cualquier pecado y si haces lo que agrada al Señor, tu Dios».
