Nehemiah 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 When Sanbal at, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that repairs to the wallsof Jerusalem were going forward -- that the gaps were beginning to fill up -- they became very angry,	1 Or quando Sanaballat sentì che noi edificavamo le mura, si adirò fuor di modo, e montato su tutte le furie, si fece beffe dei Giudei,
2 and they al plotted to come and attack Jerusalem and upset my plans.	2 e disse in presenza dei suoi fratelli e di gran folla di Samaritani: « Che fanno questi Giudei imbecilli? Li lasceran fare queste nazioni? Potran sacrificare e finire un giorno? Potran fabbricare, cavando dai mucchi di polvere le pietre bruciate? »
3 We, however, prayed to our God and organised a guard day and night to protect the city from them.	3 Tobia l'Ammonita, che gli stava accanto, aggiunse: « Fabbrichino pure: se vi sale una volpe, salterà il loro muro di pietra ».
4 But in Judah the saying went, 'The strength of the carrier falters, the rubbish heap is so vast that byourselves we cannot rebuild the wal !'	4 Ascolta, o Dio nostro, come noi siamo disprezzati: rivolgi l'obbrobrio sul loro capo, e abbandonali al disprezzo in una terra di schiavitù.
5 And our opponents said, 'They wil never know or see a thing, until we are in there among them, andthen we shall massacre them and put a stop to the work.'	5 Non coprire la loro iniquità, non sia cancellato dinanzi al tuo cospetto il loro peccato, perchè han deriso quelli che fabbricavano.
6 Now when the Jews who lived near them had warned us ten times over, 'They are coming up againstus from every place they live in,'	6 Noi dunque riedificammo le mura, e le riparammo in tutto sino alla metà, essendo il cuore del popolo eccitato al lavoro.
7 men took up position in the space behind the wal at those points where it was lowest, and I organisedthe people by families with their swords, spears and bows.	7 Or quando Sanaballat, Tobia, gli Arabi, gli Ammaniti e quelli d'Azoto sentirono che si eran saldate le brecce delle mura di Gerusalemme e che le rotture cominciavan a chiudersi, n'ebbero grandissimo sdegno,
8 Aware of their anxiety, I then addressed the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'Do not beafraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord and fight for your kinsmen, your sons, yourdaughters, your wives and your homes.'	8 e si radunarono tutt'insieme per venire a combattere contro Gerusalemme e tenderci insidie;
9 Once our enemies heard that we were forewarned and that God had thwarted their plan, they withdrewand we al went back to the wal , each one to his work.	9 ma noi ci raccomandammo a Dio e mettemmo delle sentinelle sopra le mura giorno e notte, contro di loro.
10 From then on, half my own retainers went on working, while the other half stood by, armed withspears, shields, bows and armour to protect the whole House of Judah as they rebuilt the wall.	10 Giuda diceva: « Le forze dei portatori vengono meno; vi è troppa terra, e noi non potremo riedificare le mura ».
11 The carriers were armed, working with one hand and holding a spear in the other.	11 E i nostri nemici dicevano: « Non lo devon sapere, lo devono ignorare, finché non piombiamo in mezzo a loro ad ucciderli e a far cessare il lavoro ».
12 Each builder had his sword strapped to his side as he built. Beside me stood a trumpeter.	12 Or siccome i Giudei che abitavano presso di loro, venati da noi ce lo dissero per dieci volte da tutti i luogi donde a noi eran venuti,
13 I then said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'The work is great and widely spreadout, and we are deployed along the wall some way from one another.	13 io posi in luogo adatto, dietro alla cinta delle mura, il popolo, in ordine, colle sue spade, le lance e gli archi.
14 Rally to us wherever you hear the trumpet sounding; our God wil fight for us.'	14 Dopo aver fatta l'ispezione, mi alzai e dissi ai magnati, ai magistrati e a tutto il resto del popolo: « Non abbiate paura davanti a loro. Memori del Signore grande e terribile combattete pei vostri, fratelli, pei vostri figli e le vostre figlie, per le vostre mogli e per le case vostre ».
15 And so we went on with the work from break of day until the stars came out.	15 Or avvenne che appena i nostri nemici ebbero inteso che noi eravamo stati avvertiti, Dio dissipò il loro disegno, e noi tornammo alle mura, ciascuno al suo lavoro.
16 At the same time I also told the people, 'Let every man, with his attendant, spend the night insideJerusalem; we shal spend the night on guard and the day at work.'	16 Da quel giorno in poi la metà dei giovani lavorava, e l'altra metà stava pronta a combattere con lance, scudi, archi e corazze; e i principi di tutta la casa di Giuda stavano dietro a loro.
17 Neither I, nor my brothers, nor my attendants, nor my bodyguards, ever took off our clothes; each onekept his spear in his right hand.	17 Tanto quelli che lavoravano sulle mura come quelli che portavano i pesi e li caricavano, con una mano lavoravano, e coll'altra tenevan la spada.
	18 Ciascuno dei lavoratori aveva cinta ai fianchi la spada. Così edificavano, e la tromba la sonavano accanto a me.
	19 E io dissi ai magnati, ai magistrati e al bresto del popolo: « Il lavoro è grande e molto esteso, e noi stiamo separati lungo le mura, lontani l'uno dall'altro:
	20 dovunque sentirete sonar la tromba, là radunatevi presso di noi, e il nostro Dio combatterà per noi.
	21 Noi adunque facciamo il lavoro, e la metà di noi impugni la lancia dallo spuntar dell'aurora fino a che non escano le stelle ».
	22 In quel tempo dissi pure al popolo: « Ognuno dimori col suo servo dentro Gerusalemme, per darsi il cambio la notte e il giorno nel lavoro ».
	23 In quanto a me, ai miei fratelli, alla mia gente e alle guardie che mi seguivano non ci spogliavamo nemmeno: ognuno si toglieva le vesti soltanto per lavarsi.
