Nehemiah 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 When Sanbal at, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that repairs to the wallsof Jerusalem were going forward -- that the gaps were beginning to fill up -- they became very angry,	1 - Or avvenne che quando Sanaballat seppe che noi rialzavamo le mura, s'adirò grandemente; e nel suo furore schernì i Giudei,
2 and they al plotted to come and attack Jerusalem and upset my plans.	2 e disse in presenza de' suoi fratelli e di gran numero di Samaritani: «Che fanno que' Giudei senza forze? Forse quei delle nazioni li lasceranno fare? O potranno in un sol giorno offrire il sacrifizio e compir l'opera? O potranno rimetter su le pietre ridotte in mucchi di polvere dal fuoco?».
3 We, however, prayed to our God and organised a guard day and night to protect the city from them.	3 Ed anche Tobia Ammanita, che gli stava vicino, diceva: «Fabbrichino pure; se verrà una volpe, trapasserà con un salto quel loro muro di pietra».
4 But in Judah the saying went, 'The strength of the carrier falters, the rubbish heap is so vast that byourselves we cannot rebuild the wal !'	4 Ascolta, Iddio nostro, come siam diventati oggetti di derisione; fai ricadere sul loro capo la nostra vergogna, e falli essere in disprezzo in una terra di schiavitù.
5 And our opponents said, 'They wil never know or see a thing, until we are in there among them, andthen we shall massacre them and put a stop to the work.'	5 Non ricoprire la loro iniquità, e non sia cancellato dal tuo cospetto il loro peccato, perchè hanno deriso quelli che riedificano.
6 Now when the Jews who lived near them had warned us ten times over, 'They are coming up againstus from every place they live in,'	6 Noi dunque riedificammo le mura, e le riparammo tutte, sino a metà altezza; e l'animo del popolo ne prese lena al lavoro.
7 men took up position in the space behind the wal at those points where it was lowest, and I organisedthe people by families with their swords, spears and bows.	7 Ma quando Sanaballat e Tobia e gli Arabi e gli Ammaniti e quei di Azoto seppero che si risaldavano le piaghe del muro di Gerusalemme, e che si cominciavano a richiudere le sue brecce, si sdegnarono grandemente;
8 Aware of their anxiety, I then addressed the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'Do not beafraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord and fight for your kinsmen, your sons, yourdaughters, your wives and your homes.'	8 e tutti insieme fecero lega per venire ad assalire Gerusalemme e prepararci insidie.
9 Once our enemies heard that we were forewarned and that God had thwarted their plan, they withdrewand we al went back to the wal , each one to his work.	9 E noi pregammo il nostro Iddio, e tenemmo sul muro, giorno e notte, delle guardie contro di loro.
10 From then on, half my own retainers went on working, while the other half stood by, armed withspears, shields, bows and armour to protect the whole House of Judah as they rebuilt the wall.	10 Ma quei di Giuda dicevano: «I portatori di pietre sono stanchi; v'è molta terra da portar via; non potremo finir di rifare il muro».
11 The carriers were armed, working with one hand and holding a spear in the other.	11 E i nostri nemici dicevano: «Non sappiano nulla di nulla, sinchè veniamo loro addosso ad ucciderli, e far cessare il lavoro».
12 Each builder had his sword strapped to his side as he built. Beside me stood a trumpeter.	12 Ma, essendo venuti i Giudei che abitavano presso di loro, ed avendoci avvisati per dieci volte da tutti i diversi luoghi donde eran venuti a noi,
13 I then said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'The work is great and widely spreadout, and we are deployed along the wall some way from one another.	13 io collocai dietro alle mura, per tutto il loro giro, il popolo in ordine con le sue spade e lance ed archi.
14 Rally to us wherever you hear the trumpet sounding; our God wil fight for us.'	14 E ne feci la rivista; e poi andai a dire agli ottimati, ai magistrati ed a tutto il rimanente popolo: «Non abbiate paura di loro: ricordatevi del Signore grande e terribile; e combattete pei vostri fratelli, i vostri figli, le vostre figlie, le vostre mogli, e le vostre case».
15 And so we went on with the work from break of day until the stars came out.	15 Or quando i nostri nemici seppero che eravamo stati avvisati, Iddio disperse i loro piani. E noi tutti tornammo alle mura, ciascuno al suo lavoro.
16 At the same time I also told the people, 'Let every man, with his attendant, spend the night insideJerusalem; we shal spend the night on guard and the day at work.'	16 Da quel giorno, metà dei giovani lavorava, e metà stava pronta a battaglia, con lance e scudi ed archi e corazze; e dietro a loro, i capi, di tutta la gente di Giuda.
17 Neither I, nor my brothers, nor my attendants, nor my bodyguards, ever took off our clothes; each onekept his spear in his right hand.	17 E quelli che lavoravano alle mura, o che portavano i pesi o che li scaricavano, con una mano facevano il loro lavoro, e nell'altra tenevano la spada;
	18 ciascuno infatti dei lavoratori portava al fianco la spada; lavoravano, e davano il segnale con la tromba vicino a me.
	19 E dissi agli ottimati, ai magistrati, ed ai rimanenti del popolo: «Il lavoro è grande ed esteso; noi siamo dispersi lungo le mura, distanti uno dall'altro.
	20 Dove sentirete chiamar con la tromba, ivi accorrete presso di noi; il Dio nostro combatterà con noi.
	21 Noi dunque stiamo al lavoro, e metà dei nostri stia in arme, dall'aurora sino al comparir delle stelle».
	22 In quell'occasione ancora dissi al popolo: «Ognuno di voi col suo servo rimanga entro Gerusalemme; e diamoci la muta al lavoro, notte e giorno».
	23 Io poi, e i miei fratelli, e i miei servi, e le guardie che mi seguivano, non ci spogliavamo nemmeno, altro che per qualche purificazione.
