NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Once this was done, the officials approached me to say, 'The people of Israel, the priests and theLevites, have not renounced the disgusting practices of the people of the country -- the Canaanites, the Hittites,the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Moabites, the Egyptians and the Amorites-	1 Terminate queste cose, i capi s'accostarono a me dicendo: "Il popolo d'Israele, i sacerdoti e i leviti non si sono separati dalle abominazioni delle popolazioni locali: Cananei, Hittiti, Perizziti, Gebusei, Ammoniti, Egiziani e Amorrei.
2 since they and their sons have married some of their women, as a result of which the holy race hasbeen contaminated by the people of the country. The officials and leaders have been the worst offenders in thisact of infidelity.'	2 Hanno infatti preso le figlie di costoro per sé e per i propri figli e la stirpe santa si è contaminata con le popolazioni locali! E a metter mano a tale profanazione i capi e i magistrati sono stati i primi".
3 On hearing this, I tore my clothes and my cloak; I pul ed hair from my head and beard and sat down inhorror.	3 Quando udii questa cosa mi stracciai la veste e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli del capo e i peli della barba e mi sedetti costernato.
4 Al who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered round me, when faced with the infidelity ofthe exiles, while I went on sitting there in horror until the evening sacrifice.	4 Allora tutti coloro che tremavano alle parole del Dio d'Israele si radunarono presso di me, a motivo della profanazione compiuta dagli esuli. Io rimasi là, costernato, fino al sacrificio della sera.
5 At the evening sacrifice I came out of my stupor and, falling on my knees in my torn clothes and cloak,stretched out my hands to Yahweh my God,	5 Al sacrificio della sera mi alzai dalla mia umiliazione, con veste e mantello a brandelli, e caddi in ginocchio. Stesi le mani verso il Signore, Dio mio,
6 and said: 'My God, I am ashamed, I blush to lift my face to you, my God. For our iniquities haveincreased, until they are higher than our heads, and our guilt has risen as high as heaven.	6 e dissi: "Mio Dio! Io sono confuso e mi vergogno di alzare verso di te la mia faccia, o mio Dio! I nostri delitti infatti si sono moltiplicati fin sopra la nostra testa e la nostra colpa è grande fino al cielo.
7 From the days of our ancestors until now we have been deeply guilty and, because of our iniquities, we,our kings and our priests, have been handed over to the kings of other countries, to the sword, to captivity, topil age, to shame, as is the case today.	7 Dai giorni dei nostri padri sino ad oggi noi siamo profondamente colpevoli. Per le nostre iniquità noi, i nostri re, i nostri sacerdoti, siamo stati dati nelle mani dei re delle nazioni, alla spada, alla deportazione, alla rapina, all'obbrobrio; come è tuttora.
8 And now, for a brief moment, the favour of Yahweh our God has allowed a remnant of us to escape andgiven us a stable home in his holy place, so that our God can raise our spirits and revive us a little in our slavery.	8 Ma adesso il Signore nostro Dio ci ha fatto grazia per breve istante, lasciandoci un resto e accordandoci un asilo nel suo santo luogo. Così il nostro Dio ha illuminato i nostri occhi e ci ha dato qualche conforto nella nostra schiavitù;
9 For we are slaves; but God has not forgotten us in our slavery; he has extended his faithful love to useven under the kings of Persia and revived us to rebuild the Temple of our God, restore its ruins and provide uswith a refuge in Judah and in Jerusalem.	9 giacché schiavi noi siamo. Ma nella nostra schiavitù il nostro Dio non ci ha abbandonati! Ci ha conciliato il favore dei re di Persia, dandoci animo, affinché potessimo edificare la casa del nostro Dio, restaurandone le rovine, e darci una muraglia in Giuda e in Gerusalemme.
10 But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have abandoned your commandments,	10 Ma ora, che cosa potremo dire dopo tutto ciò, o nostro Dio? Abbiamo infatti abbandonato i tuoi comandamenti,
11 which you gave through your servants the prophets in these terms, "The country which you are aboutto possess is a polluted country, pol uted by the people of the country and their disgusting practices, which havefilled it with their filth from end to end.	11 che tu avevi ordinato per mezzo dei tuoi servi, i profeti, dicendo: "Il paese, in cui entrate per prenderne possesso, è un paese contaminato per le immondezze delle popolazioni locali, per le impurità di cui l'hanno riempito da un capo all'altro con le loro nefandezze.
12 Hence you are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, or let their daughters marry yoursons, or ever concern yourselves about peace or good relations with them, if you want to grow stronger, to liveoff the fat of the land and bequeath it to your sons for ever."	12 Dunque, non date le vostre figlie ai loro figli, né prendete le loro figlie per i vostri figli! Non cercate mai la loro prosperità né il loro benessere, affinché diventiate voi forti, potendo mangiare i frutti migliori del paese e lasciarli in eredità ai vostri figli per sempre".
13 'After al that has befal en us because of our evil deeds and our deep guilt -- though you, our God, havepunished us less than our iniquities deserved and have al owed us to escape like this-	13 Ma dopo quanto ci è avvenuto a causa delle nostre azioni malvagie e per la nostra grande colpa, benché, o nostro Dio, tu abbia computato in meno le nostre iniquità e abbia lasciato in vita un resto,
14 are we to break your commandments again and intermarry with people with these disgustingpractices? Would you not be enraged with us to the point of destroying us, leaving neither remnant nor survivor?	14 torneremo noi forse a violare i tuoi comandamenti, imparentandoci con questi popoli abominevoli? Non ti adireresti contro di noi fino a distruggerci, sicché non vi sia più né un resto né un superstite?
15 Yahweh, God of Israel, you are upright. We survive only as the remnant we are today. We come beforeyou in our guilt; because of it we cannot stand in your presence.'	15 O Signore, Dio d'Israele, tu sei giusto, perciò noi, un resto, sopravviviamo, così come oggi accade. Eccoci davanti a te con le nostre colpe, benché davanti a te noi non potremmo reggere, a causa di esse!".
