NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for twenty-nine yearsin Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.	1 Amasias tinha vinte e cinco anos quando começou a reinar. Reinou durante vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. Sua mãe chamava-se Joadá, e era de Jerusalém.
2 He did what Yahweh regards as right, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Fez o bem aos olhos do Senhor, mas não com um coração inteiramente devotado.
3 Once the kingdom was firmly under his control, he killed those of his retainers who had murdered theking his father.	3 Desde que se sentiu seguro de seu poder real, mandou matar aqueles servos que tinham assassinado o rei, seu pai.
4 But he did not put their sons to death; this was in accordance with what is written in the Law, in thebook of Moses, where Yahweh had commanded, 'Parents may not be put to death for children, nor children forparents, but each must be put to death for his own crime.'	4 Mas não mandou matar os filhos deles, conforme o que está escrito no livro da lei de Moisés, onde o Senhor ordena: Os país não serão mortos por seus filhos, nem os filhos por seus pais: cada um morrerá por seu próprio pecado.
5 Amaziah summoned Judah and organised al Judah and Benjamin by families under commanders ofthousands and commanders of hundreds. He also made a register of those who were twenty years old andupwards, and found there were three hundred thousand picked men, ready for service and capable of wieldingspear and shield.	5 Amasias reuniu os homens de Judá e os dividiu por famílias com os chefes de milhares e os chefes de centenas, para todo o Judá e todo o Benjamim. 7 A man of God then came to him and said, 'My lord king, do not let the Israelite troops march with you,for Yahweh is not with Israel or with any of the Ephraimites.	7 Mas um homem de Deus veio-lhe ao encontro. "Ó rei, disse ele, não é preciso que o exército de Israel te acompanhe, porque o Senhor não está com Israel, com esses filhos de Efraim.
8 For however valiantly you act in war, God will bring you down before the enemy, for God has thepower to uphold or to throw down.'	8 Vai sozinho; age e sê valente no combate; de outra forma Deus te deixará cair diante do inimigo, pois ele tem o poder de socorrer ou de abater."
9 Amaziah said to the man of God, 'But what about the hundred talents which I have paid for theIsraelite troops?' 'Yahweh can give you far more than that,' said the man of God.	9 Disse Amasias ao homem de Deus: "Mas que farei então com respeito aos cem talentos que dei às tropas israelitas?" - O Senhor respondeu o homem de Deus, tem para dar-te mais do que isso."
10 At this, Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them homeagain. They were furious with Judah and went home in a great rage.	10 Amasias licenciou, pois, e enviou de volta para a sua terra a tropa de efraimitas que tinha vindo a ele. Mas apoderou-se deles uma viva irritação contra Judá e eles retomaram furiosos para as suas casas.
11 Amaziah then, coming to a decision, led out his own troops and, having reached the Valley of Salt,struck down ten thousand Seirites.	11 Amasias, cheio de confiança, foi com seu exército para o vale do Sal, onde ?matou dez mil seiritas.
12 The men of Judah captured ten thousand more alive and, taking them to the summit of the Rock,threw them off the summit of the Rock so that they were al dashed to pieces.	12 Os filhos de Judá tinham capturado dez mil homens vivos; conduziram-nos ao alto de um rochedo, de onde os precipitaram, e todos ficaram despedaçados.
13 Meanwhile, the troops whom Amaziah had dismissed and not al owed to go into battle with him rasedthe towns of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-Horon, kil ing three thousand of their inhabitants and capturing great quantities of plunder.	13 Entretanto, os homens da tropa que Amasias tinha licenciado, não os deixando ir para a guerra com ele, saquearam as cidades de Judá desde Samaria até Betoron. Mataram três mil homens e levaram um considerável despojo.
14 On returning from his slaughter of the Edomites, Amaziah brought the gods of the Seirites with him;he set these up as his gods, bowing down before them and burning incense to them.	14 Tendo voltado para casal depois da derrota dos edomitas, Amasias, que tinha trazido os deuses dos seiritas, fez deles seus próprios deuses; prostrou-se diante deles, queimando-lhes incenso.
15 Yahweh's anger was aroused by Amaziah and he sent him a prophet, who said to him, 'Why do youconsult those people's gods when they could not save their own people from your clutches?'	15 Inflamou-se por isso a ira do Senhor contra ele; enviou-lhe um profeta, que lhe disse: "Por que foste procurar esses deuses estranhos, que não foram capazes de salvar seu povo de tua mão?"
16 He was stil speaking when Amaziah interrupted him. 'Have we appointed you a royal counsel or?Stop, as you value your life!' So the prophet stopped, and then said, 'I know that God has decided to destroy youfor having done this and for not listening to my advice.'	16 Enquanto lhe falava o profeta, Amasias lhe disse: "Foste tu nomeado conselheiro cio rei? Vai-te embora, se não queres que eu te mate!" O profeta retirou-se, dizendo: "Sei que Deus decretou tua perda, porque te portaste mal e não queres ouvir minha advertência."
17 After consultation, Amaziah king of Judah then sent a message to Joash son of Jehoahaz son ofJehu, king of Israel, saying, 'Come and make a trial of strength!'	17 Houve um conselho, depois do qual Amasias mandou dizer a Joás, filho de Joacaz, filho de Jeú, rei de Israel: "Vem, para que nos vejamos face a face." Joás, rei de Israel, mandou responder a Amasias, rei de Judá:
18 Joash king of Israel sent back word to Amaziah king of Judah, 'The thistle of Lebanon sent amessage to the cedar of Lebanon, saying, "Give my son your daughter in marriage"; but a wild animal of theLebanon ran over the thistle and squashed it.	18 "O espinho do Líbano mandou dizer ao cedro do Líbano: Dá tua filha por esposa a meu filho. Mas os animais selvagens do Líbano passaram e pisaram o espinho.
19 "Look at me, the conqueror of Edom," you say, and now aspire to even greater glory. But stay whereyou belong! Why chal enge disaster, to your own and Judah's ruin?'	19 Dizes que derrotaste os edomitas, e teu coração se enche de orgulho. Vamos! Fica em casa. Por que correres tu à frente do perigo, arriscando-te a uma empresa que te perderá a ti e Judá contigo?"
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for this was an act of God to deliver them up for having consulted thegods of Edom.	20 Mas Amasias nada quis ouvir. Era o efeito de uma disposição divina, a fim de que fossem entregues a seus inimigos, eles que tinham adorado os deuses de Edoin.
21 So Joash king of Israel marched to the attack. And at Beth-Shemesh, which belongs to Judah, heand Amaziah king of Judah made their trial of strength.	21 Joás, rei de Israel, pôs-se a caminho; encontraram-se ele e Amasias, rei de Judá, em Betsames, que está em Judá.
22 Judah was defeated by Israel, and everyone fled to his tent.	22 Judá foi vencido por Israel, e cada um fugiu para sua tenda.
23 The king of Judah, Amaziah son of Joash, son of Ahaziah, was taken prisoner at Beth-Shemesh byJoash king of Israel who led him off to Jerusalem, where he demolished four hundred cubits of the city walbetween the Ephraim Gate and the Corner Gate;	23 Joás, rei de Israel, aprisionou, em Betsames, Amasias, rei de Judá, filho de Joás, filho de Ocozias. Mandou-o para Jerusalém e abriu na muralha uma brecha de quatrocentos côvados, desde a porta de Efraim até a porta do ângulo.
24 he then took back with him to Samaria al the gold and silver, and al the vessels to be found in theTemple of God in the care of Obed-Edom, the treasures in the palace, and hostages besides.	24 Apoderou-se de todo o ouro e prata, assim como dos utensílios que se encontravam no templo, em casa de Obededom e nos tesouros do palácio real; e retornou a Samaria, levando reféns.
25 Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived for fifteen years after the death of Joash son ofJehoahaz, king of Israel.	25 Amasias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, viveu ainda quinze anos depois da morte de Joás, filho de Joacaz, rei de Israel.
26 The rest of the history of Amaziah, from first to last, is this not recorded in the Book of the Kings ofJudah and Israel?	26 O resto dos atos de Amasias, dos primeiros aos últimos, está relatado no livro dos reis de Judá e de Israel.
27 Some time after Amaziah had defected from Yahweh, a plot having been hatched against him inJerusalem, he fled to Lachish where he was murdered.	27 Depois que Amasias se desviou do Senhor, tramou-se contra ele em Jerusalém uma conspiração, e ele fugiu para Laquis. Perseguiram-no, porém, até lá e o mataram.
28 He was then transported by horse and buried with his ancestors in the city of David.	28 Transportaram-lhe o corpo em cima de cavalos, e sepultaram-no com seus pais na cidade de Judá.
