2 Chronicles 25

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for twenty-nine yearsin Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.	1 Amasias devint roi à l’âge de 25 ans et il régna 29 ans à Jérusalem; sa mère s’appelait Yohaddan, elle était de Jérusalem.
2 He did what Yahweh regards as right, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Il fit ce qui est juste au regard de Yahvé, mais non sans quelques faiblesses.
3 Once the kingdom was firmly under his control, he killed those of his retainers who had murdered theking his father.	3 Lorsqu’il eut bien en main le pouvoir, il tua les serviteurs qui avaient mis à mort le roi, son père.
4 But he did not put their sons to death; this was in accordance with what is written in the Law, in thebook of Moses, where Yahweh had commanded, 'Parents may not be put to death for children, nor children forparents, but each must be put to death for his own crime.'	4 Mais il ne mit pas à mort leurs fils, selon le commandement de la Loi de Yahvé où il est écrit: “Les pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour les fils et les fils ne mourront pas pour les pères: chacun mourra pour son propre péché.”
5 Amaziah summoned Judah and organised al Judah and Benjamin by families under commanders ofthousands and commanders of hundreds. He also made a register of those who were twenty years old andupwards, and found there were three hundred thousand picked men, ready for service and capable of wieldingspear and shield.	5 Amasias rassembla les hommes de Juda et les organisa par familles, avec des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent, dans tout le territoire de Juda et de Benjamin. Il recensa tous ceux de plus de 20 ans; il trouva 300 000 hommes de guerre portant la lance et le bouclier et entraînés au combat.
6 Furthermore, he hired a hundred thousand tough fighting men from Israel for a hundred talents ofsilver.	6 Pour 100 talents d’argent il loua en Israël 100 000 soldats entraînés.
7 A man of God then came to him and said, 'My lord king, do not let the Israelite troops march with you,for Yahweh is not with Israel or with any of the Ephraimites.	7 Mais un homme de Dieu vint le trouver et lui dit: “Ô roi! Ne prends pas avec toi une armée d’Israël: Yahvé n’est pas avec Israël, avec tous ces fils d’Éphraïm!
8 For however valiantly you act in war, God will bring you down before the enemy, for God has thepower to uphold or to throw down.'	8 Si tu la prends, Dieu te fera trébucher devant l’ennemi, même si tu es courageux au combat: Dieu seul est la force qui vient en aide ou qui fait trébucher!”
9 Amaziah said to the man of God, 'But what about the hundred talents which I have paid for theIsraelite troops?' 'Yahweh can give you far more than that,' said the man of God.	9 Amasias répondit à l’homme de Dieu: “Que vais-je faire des 100 talents que j’ai donnés pour cette armée d’Israël?” L’homme de Dieu lui dit: “Yahvé a de quoi te donner beaucoup plus que cela.”
10 At this, Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them homeagain. They were furious with Judah and went home in a great rage.	10 Amasias laissa donc de côté l’armée qui était venue d’Éphraïm et la renvoya chez elle, mais ces hommes étaient furieux contre Juda et ils s’en retournèrent chez eux rouges de colère.
11 Amaziah then, coming to a decision, led out his own troops and, having reached the Valley of Salt,struck down ten thousand Seirites.	11 Plein d’ardeur, Amasias emmena son peuple et gagna la vallée du Sel; il écrasa là 10 000 hommes parmi les fils de Séïr.
12 The men of Judah captured ten thousand more alive and, taking them to the summit of the Rock,threw them off the summit of the Rock so that they were al dashed to pieces.	12 Les Judéens ramenèrent 10 000 prisonniers et les conduisirent au sommet de La Roche; du sommet de La Roche, ils les jetèrent en bas où tous se brisèrent.
13 Meanwhile, the troops whom Amaziah had dismissed and not al owed to go into battle with him rasedthe towns of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-Horon, kil ing three thousand of their inhabitants and capturing great quantities of plunder.	13 Pendant ce temps, les mercenaires qu’Amasias avait renvoyés sans leur permettre d’aller avec lui au combat, se jetèrent sur les villes de Juda, depuis Samarie jusqu’à Beth-Horon; ils massacrèrent 3 000 hommes et emportèrent un grand butin.
14 On returning from his slaughter of the Edomites, Amaziah brought the gods of the Seirites with him;he set these up as his gods, bowing down before them and burning incense to them.	14 Au retour de sa campagne contre les Édomites, Amasias rapporta les dieux des gens de Séïr. Il en fit ses propres dieux, il se prosterna devant eux et fit fumer de l’encens.
15 Yahweh's anger was aroused by Amaziah and he sent him a prophet, who said to him, 'Why do youconsult those people's gods when they could not save their own people from your clutches?'	15 Yahvé se mit en colère contre Amasias et lui envoya un prophète pour lui dire: “Pourquoi t’es-tu adressé aux dieux de ce peuple: ils n’ont même pas été capables de le sauver de ta main?”
16 He was stil speaking when Amaziah interrupted him. 'Have we appointed you a royal counsel or?Stop, as you value your life!' So the prophet stopped, and then said, 'I know that God has decided to destroy youfor having done this and for not listening to my advice.'	16 Mais le roi répondit à ces paroles: “Est-ce que nous t’avons choisi comme conseiller du roi? Garde tes réflexions pour toi, ou bien veux-tu que l’on te frappe?” Le prophète se tut, mais non sans ajouter: “Après avoir fait cela, tu n’as pas écouté mon avertissement; je vois donc que Dieu a décidé ta perte.”
17 After consultation, Amaziah king of Judah then sent a message to Joash son of Jehoahaz son ofJehu, king of Israel, saying, 'Come and make a trial of strength!'	17 Après avoir pris conseil, Amasias roi de Juda envoya dire à Joas fils de Yoacaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d’Israël: “Viens te mesurer avec moi!”
18 Joash king of Israel sent back word to Amaziah king of Judah, 'The thistle of Lebanon sent amessage to the cedar of Lebanon, saying, "Give my son your daughter in marriage"; but a wild animal of theLebanon ran over the thistle and squashed it.	18 Joas, roi d’Israël envoya dire à Amasias, roi de Juda: “L’épine du Liban envoya dire au cèdre du Liban: ‘Donne ta fille pour qu’elle soit l’épouse de mon fils.’ Mais une bête sauvage du Liban passa, qui piétina l’épine.
19 "Look at me, the conqueror of Edom," you say, and now aspire to even greater glory. But stay whereyou belong! Why chal enge disaster, to your own and Judah's ruin?'	19 Tu te dis: ‘J’ai écrasé Édom’, et tu en es très fier. Reste donc chez toi, pourquoi attirer le malheur et la ruine sur toi, et sur Juda avec toi?”
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for this was an act of God to deliver them up for having consulted thegods of Edom.	20 Mais Amasias n’écouta pas. Cela venait de Dieu, il voulait les livrer parce qu’ils avaient recherché les dieux d’Édom.
21 So Joash king of Israel marched to the attack. And at Beth-Shemesh, which belongs to Judah, heand Amaziah king of Judah made their trial of strength.	21 Joas roi d’Israël monta donc et ils se mesurèrent, lui et Amasias roi de Juda, à Beth-Chémech, dans le territoire de Juda.
22 Judah was defeated by Israel, and everyone fled to his tent.	22 Juda fut battu par Israël et chacun s’enfuit vers sa tente.
23 The king of Judah, Amaziah son of Joash, son of Ahaziah, was taken prisoner at Beth-Shemesh byJoash king of Israel who led him off to Jerusalem, where he demolished four hundred cubits of the city walbetween the Ephraim Gate and the Corner Gate;	23 Joas roi d’Israël fit prisonnier à Beth-Chémech Amasias roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils d’Okozias. Il l’emmena à Jérusalem et il abattit le rempart de Jérusalem sur une centaine de mètres, depuis la porte d’Éphraïm jusqu’à la porte de l’Angle.
24 he then took back with him to Samaria al the gold and silver, and al the vessels to be found in theTemple of God in the care of Obed-Edom, the treasures in the palace, and hostages besides.	24 Il ramassa tout l’or, tout l’argent et tout le mobilier qui se trouvaient dans la Maison de Dieu, chez Obed-Édom; il prit les trésors du palais royal et des otages, puis il repartit à Samarie.
25 Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived for fifteen years after the death of Joash son ofJehoahaz, king of Israel.	25 Amasias fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut encore 15 ans après la mort de Joas fils de Yoacaz, roi d’Israël.
26 The rest of the history of Amaziah, from first to last, is this not recorded in the Book of the Kings ofJudah and Israel?	26 Le reste des actes d’Amasias depuis les premiers jusqu’aux derniers, cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le Livre des Rois de Juda et d’Israël?
27 Some time after Amaziah had defected from Yahweh, a plot having been hatched against him inJerusalem, he fled to Lachish where he was murdered.	27 Après l’époque où Amasias s’écarta de Yahvé, une conspiration s’organisa contre lui à Jérusalem; il prit la fuite pour Lakish, mais on le poursuivit jusqu’à Lakish, et là il fut mis à mort.
28 He was then transported by horse and buried with his ancestors in the city of David.	28 On le ramena avec des chevaux, et on l’enterra avec ses pères dans la Cité de David.
