1 Some time later, the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them the Meunites, advanced to war againstJehoshaphat.	1 - Dopo queste cose i figli di Moab e i figli di Ammon e con essi degli Ammoniti si raccolsero per muover guerra a Josafat.
2 Jehoshaphat received the following intel igence, 'A vast horde is advancing on you from the other sideof the Sea, from Edom; they are already at Hazazon-Tamar, that is, En-Gedi.'	2 Vennero dei messaggeri ad informare Josafat, dicendo: «Una gran moltitudine di gente s'avanza contro di te dal di là del mare e dalla Siria, e si è accampata in Asasontamar, cioè in Engaddi».
3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and resolved to have recourse to Yahweh; he proclaimed a fast throughoutal Judah.	3 Josafat ne restò atterrito e si rivolse tutto a pregare il Signore e ordinò in tutto Giuda un digiuno.
4 So Judah assembled to seek help from Yahweh; to seek Yahweh they came from every town inJudah.	4 Adunatosi Giuda a pregare il Signore, e venuti tutti dalle città a supplicarlo,
5 Then, standing in the Temple of Yahweh in front of the new court among the assembled people ofJudah and Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat	5 Josafat si pose in mezzo all'assemblea di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa del Signore, dinanzi al nuovo atrio,
6 said, 'Yahweh, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven, and do you not rule al the kingdomsof the nations? Your power and might are such that no one can resist you.	6 e disse: «Signore, Dio dei padri nostri, tu sei Dio nel cielo e sei il padrone di tutti i regni delle genti; in mano tua è la fortezza e la potenza, nè alcuno può resistere contro di te.
7 Did not you, our God, dispossess the inhabitants of this country for your people Israel and give it tothe descendants of Abraham, your friend, for ever?	7 Non sei tu, o Signore Dio nostro, che sterminasti dinanzi al popolo tuo Israele tutti gli abitatori di questa terra, e non l'hai tu data per sempre alla discendenza di Abramo tuo amico?
8 They have lived in it and built you a sanctuary there for your name,	8 Essi l'hanno abitata e hanno costruito in essa un santuario al tuo nome, dicendo:
9 saying, "If disaster, war, flood, pestilence or famine befal us, and we stand in front of this Temple,before you -- for your name is in this Temple -- and cry to you in our distress, then you wil listen and rescue us."	9 - Se ci incoglieranno sventure, spada vendicatrice, pestilenza o carestia, noi staremo nel cospetto tuo dinanzi a questa casa nella quale è invocato il tuo nome, e alzeremo la voce a te in mezzo alle nostre tribolazioni, e tu ci esaudirai e ci salverai. -
10 'Now see, the Ammonites and Moabites and the people of Mount Seir, whom you would not al owIsrael to invade when they came out of Egypt -- on the contrary, Israel avoided them, and did not destroy them-	10 Ora adunque ecco i figli di Ammon, di Moab, e del monte di Seir, in mezzo ai quali non hai concesso ad Israele di passare quando uscivano dall'Egitto, ed essi furon lasciati in disparte e non vennero sterminati;
11 see how they reward us, by coming to drive us out of your possession which you allotted to us!	11 ora invece essi fanno il contrario e si sforzano di cacciare noi dal possesso, che tu ci hai dato.
12 Our God, will you not pass sentence on them, since we are helpless against this vast horde about toattack us? Because we do not know what to do, we look to you.'	12 O Dio nostro, non farai tu giustizia di costoro? Quanto a noi non abbiamo forza sufficiente per resistere a tal moltitudine che irrompe sopra di noi. Ma siccome non sappiamo quel che dobbiamo fare, non ci resta altro che di poter dirigere i nostri occhi a te».
13 Al Judah, including their families, wives and children, were standing before Yahweh,	13 Tutto Giuda compresi i bambini e le donne e i loro fanciulli se ne stavano dinanzi al Signore.
14 when, in the middle of the assembly, the spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son ofBenaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah the Levite, a member of the clan of Asaph,	14 Eravi colà Jaaziel, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Banaia, figlio di Jeiel, figlio di Matania, un levita dei figli di Asaf, sovra del quale venne lo spirito del Signore in mezzo alla folla,
15 who then cried, 'Listen, al Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat!Yahweh says this to you, "Do not be afraid, do not be daunted by this vast horde, for the war is not your affair butGod's.	15 e disse: «State attenti, voi tutti di Giuda, voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu re Josafat: Questo vi dice il Signore: - Non abbiate paura, non temete tanta moltitudine, poichè questa non è battaglia vostra, ma di Dio.
16 Go down against them tomorrow; they are coming up by the Slope of Ziz and you wil encounterthem at the end of the ravine near the desert of Jeruel.	16 Domani moverete contro di essi, poichè stanno per salire sul colle che ha nome Sis e li troverete all'estremità del torrente, che è contro il deserto di Jeruel.
17 You wil not need to fight in this battle. Take up your position, stand firm, and see what salvationYahweh has in store for you. Judah and Jerusalem, be fearless, be dauntless; march out against them tomorrowand Yahweh will be with you." '	17 Non sarete voi a combattere, ma soltanto statevene ad attendere con fiducia e vedrete il soccorso del Signore sopra di voi, o Giuda e Gerusalemme. Non abbiate paura e non temete, domani voi moverete contro di loro e il Signore sarà con voi -».
18 Jehoshaphat bowed his head, his face to the ground, and al Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem feldown before Yahweh to worship Yahweh.	18 Allora Josafat, Giuda e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme caddero a terra dinanzi al Signore e lo adorarono.
19 Then the Levites -- both the Kohathites and Korahites -- stood up to praise Yahweh, God of Israel, atthe top of their voices.	19 Frattanto i leviti della stirpe di Caat e della stirpe di Core, lodavano il Signore Dio d'Israele a voce altissima.
20 Early next morning they prepared to set out for the desert of Tekoa. As they were setting out,Jehoshaphat stood up and said, 'Listen to me, Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh yourGod and you wil be secure; believe in his prophets and you wil be successful.'	20 Quando al mattino si levarono, presero la via del deserto di Tecua e mentre si allontanavano, Josafat stette in mezzo a loro e disse: «Ascoltatemi, uomini di Giuda, e voi tutti abitanti di Gerusalemme. Abbiate fiducia nel Signore Dio vostro e sarete sicuri; confidate nei profeti suoi e tutto riuscirà bene».
21 Then, having conferred with the people, he appointed singers who were to praise Yahweh and go outahead of the army in sacred vestments, singing Praise Yahweh, for his faithful love endures for ever!	21 Diede inoltre al popolo alcuni consigli e costituì dei cantori del Signore, perchè lo lodassero in mezzo alla schiera e precedessero l'esercito e ad una voce gridassero: «Lodate il Signore, poichè eterna è la sua misericordia.»
22 The moment they began their shouts of praise, Yahweh sprang an ambush on the Ammonites,Moabites and the people of Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and that was the end of them,	22 Com'ebbero cominciato a cantare le lodi, il Signore rivolse contro di loro medesimi le imboscate dei figli di Ammon, di Moab e della montagna di Seir, che erano venuti per combattere contro Giuda; essi furono sconfitti,
23 for the Ammonites and Moabites turned on the people of Mount Seir, and put them under the curseof destruction and then, having finished off the people of Seir, set to work slaughtering one another.	23 perchè i figli di Ammon e di Moab insorsero contro gli abitanti del monte Seir, per ucciderli e sterminarli; e dopo aver fatto ciò, eran venuti in rotta tra di loro e si ferirono gli uni gli altri,
24 When Judah reached the point overlooking the desert and looked towards the horde, there werenothing but corpses lying on the ground; no one escaped.	24 cosicchè quando Giuda pervenne alla vetta, che guarda verso il deserto, vide da lungi la spaziosa regione piena di cadaveri, senza che alcuno avesse potuto sfuggire alla morte.
25 When Jehoshaphat arrived to take the booty, they found quantities of cattle and innumerablepossessions, clothes and valuables, which they seized for themselves; it was impossible to carry it, and it tookthem three days to collect it.	25 Venne perciò Josafat e tutto il popolo che era con lui a spogliare i morti, e trovarono fra i cadaveri molti oggetti, vesti e vasi preziosissimi, e fecero tanto bottino che non potevano portarlo tutto, e per tre giorni non riuscirono a portare via il bottino tanto era copioso.
26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed Yahweh -- hence theplace was given the name Val ey of Beracah, which it stil has today.	26 Nel quarto giorno poi si riunirono nella Valle della Benedizione; ivi benedirono il Signore, e perciò chiamarono quel luogo fino ai nostri giorni "Valle della Benedizione".
27 Then al the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem with Jehoshaphat at theirhead as Yahweh had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.	27 Tornarono così tutti gli uomini di Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, con gran gioia, per averli il Signore consolati col trionfo sui loro nemici.
28 To the sound of lyre, harp and trumpet they came to Jerusalem, to the Temple of Yahweh,	28 Entrarono essi in Gerusalemme nella casa del Signore con salteri e cetre e trombe;
29 and a panic from Yahweh seized al the neighbouring kings when they heard how Yahweh hadfought against the enemies of Israel.	29 e il timor del Signore invase tutti i regni della terra, quando udirono che il Signore aveva combattuto contro i nemici di Israele.
30 And henceforth Jehoshaphat's reign was undisturbed, for his God gave him peace all round.	30 Così il regno di Josafat fu in pace e il Signore gli diede quiete da tutte le parti.
31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he came to the throne and hereigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.	31 Josafat adunque regnò sopra Giuda. Aveva trentacinque anni quando cominciò a regnare e ne regnò venticinque in Gerusalemme. Il nome della madre di lui fu Azuba, figlia di Selai.
32 He fol owed the example of his father Asa undeviatingly, doing what Yahweh regards as right.	32 Egli camminò nella via del padre suo Asa, nè mai si allontanò da essa, facendo quanto era accetto al Signore.
33 The high places, however, were not abolished; the people had still not set their hearts on the God oftheir ancestors.	33 Non tolse però i luoghi eccelsi e ancora il popolo non aveva rivolto il suo cuore al Signore de' padri suoi.
34 The rest of the history of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, is written down in the records of Jehu son ofHanani, which are quoted in the Book of the Kings of Israel.	34 Il resto delle azioni di Josafat, tanto le prime che le ultime, sono state scritte nelle memorie di Jeu, figlio di Anani, che le espose nei libri dei re d'Israele.
35 Afterwards, Jehoshaphat formed a partnership with Ahaziah king of Israel, which was very wrong ofhim.	35 Dopo ciò Josafat, re di Giuda, strinse amicizia con Ocozia, re di Israele, le cui opere furono perverse.
36 He joined him in building some ships to go to Tarshish; they built them at Ezion-Geber.	36 Si associò a lui nel fabbricare navi per andare in Tarsis e fecero una flotta in Asiongaber.
37 Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah then prophesied against Jehoshaphat as fol ows, 'Becauseyou have become Ahaziah's partner, Yahweh has wrecked your efforts.' The ships were wrecked and werenever fit to sail for Tarshish.	37 Ma Eliezer figlio di Dodau, di Maresa, profetò a Josafat dicendo: «Poichè contraesti alleanza con Ocozia, il Signore abbatterà le tue opere». E le navi si infransero e non poterono andare in Tarsis.
