1 Some time later, the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them the Meunites, advanced to war againstJehoshaphat.	1 Dopo queste cose si raunarono i figliuoli di Moab, e i figliuoli di Ammon, e con essi erano degli Ammoniti per muover guerra contro Josaphat.
2 Jehoshaphat received the following intel igence, 'A vast horde is advancing on you from the other sideof the Sea, from Edom; they are already at Hazazon-Tamar, that is, En-Gedi.'	2 E furono spediti messi a dire a Josaphat: Una gran turba di gente si è mossa contro di te da paesi di là dal mare, e dalla Siria; ed ora sono a campo in Asason-thamar, che è Engaddi.
3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and resolved to have recourse to Yahweh; he proclaimed a fast throughoutal Judah.	3 E Josaphat pieno di spavento si rivolse tutto a pregare il Signore, e intimò il digiuno a tutto il popolo di Giuda.
4 So Judah assembled to seek help from Yahweh; to seek Yahweh they came from every town inJudah.	4 E si adunò il popol di Giuda per invocare il Signore; e tutte le genti vennero dalle loro città a porgergli suppliche.
5 Then, standing in the Temple of Yahweh in front of the new court among the assembled people ofJudah and Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat	5 E alzatosi Josaphat nel mezzo dell'adunanza di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme nella casa del Signore dinanzi al nuovo atrio,
6 said, 'Yahweh, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven, and do you not rule al the kingdomsof the nations? Your power and might are such that no one can resist you.	6 Disse: Signore Dio de' padri nostri, tu se' il Dio del cielo, e sei il padrone di tutti i regni delle nazioni: nelle mani tue è la fortezza, e la possanza, e nissuno può resistere a te.
7 Did not you, our God, dispossess the inhabitants of this country for your people Israel and give it tothe descendants of Abraham, your friend, for ever?	7 Non se' tu quegli, o Signor nostro, che uccidesti tutti gli abitanti di questa terra all'arrivo d'Israele tuo popolo, e la assegnasti alla stirpe d'Abramo amico tuo in perpetuo?
8 They have lived in it and built you a sanctuary there for your name,	8 E la hanno abitata, e ci hanno eretto un Santuario al nome tuo, e han detto:
9 saying, "If disaster, war, flood, pestilence or famine befal us, and we stand in front of this Temple,before you -- for your name is in this Temple -- and cry to you in our distress, then you wil listen and rescue us."	9 Se verranno sciagure sopra di noi, spada vendicatrice, o pestilenza, o carestia, noi ci presenteremo al tuo cospetto dinanzi a questa casa, la quale porta il tuo nome: e nelle nostre tribolazioni alzeremo le grida a te, e tu ci esaudirai, e ci salverai.
10 'Now see, the Ammonites and Moabites and the people of Mount Seir, whom you would not al owIsrael to invade when they came out of Egypt -- on the contrary, Israel avoided them, and did not destroy them-	10 Ecco adunque che adesso i figliuolini di Ammon, e di Moab, e le montagne di Seir, sulle terre de' quali non permettesti, che passasse Israele, quando usciva dall'Egitto, ed egli lasciolli da parte, e non gli uccise;
11 see how they reward us, by coming to drive us out of your possession which you allotted to us!	11 Eglino pel contrario tentano, e fanno ogni sforzo per cacciar noi dal paese, di cui tu desti a noi il possesso.
12 Our God, will you not pass sentence on them, since we are helpless against this vast horde about toattack us? Because we do not know what to do, we look to you.'	12 Dio nostro, dunque tu non farai giudizio di costoro? Imperocché non è noi tal fortezza, che possiam resistere a questa moltitudine, che ci assalisce. Ma non sapendo quel, che abbiamo da fare, questo solo ci rimane di volgere a te gli occhi nostri.
13 Al Judah, including their families, wives and children, were standing before Yahweh,	13 E tutto Giuda era dinanzi al Signore co' piccoli bambini, e colle mogli e co' figliuoli.
14 when, in the middle of the assembly, the spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son ofBenaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah the Levite, a member of the clan of Asaph,	14 Ed eravi Jahaziel figliuolo di Zacharia, figliuolo di Banaia, figliuolo di Jehiel, figliuolo di Mathania, Levita, della famiglia di Asaph, ed entrò lo Spirito del Signore in lui, che stava in mezzo alla folla.
15 who then cried, 'Listen, al Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat!Yahweh says this to you, "Do not be afraid, do not be daunted by this vast horde, for the war is not your affair butGod's.	15 Ed egli disse: Ponete mente tu, o Giuda, e voi, abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, re Josaphat: Queste cose dice a voi il Signore: Non vi spaurite, e non temete quella moltitudine: perocché non è vostra la pugna, ma di Dio.
16 Go down against them tomorrow; they are coming up by the Slope of Ziz and you wil encounterthem at the end of the ravine near the desert of Jeruel.	16 Domane andrete contro di essi: perocchè saliranno al colle chiamato Sis, e li troverete all'estremità del torrente, che corre dirimpetto al deserto di Jeruel.
17 You wil not need to fight in this battle. Take up your position, stand firm, and see what salvationYahweh has in store for you. Judah and Jerusalem, be fearless, be dauntless; march out against them tomorrowand Yahweh will be with you." '	17 A voi non toccherà il combattere, ma solo tenetevi fermi con fidanza, e vedrete il soccorso, che darà il Signore a voi, o Giuda, e o Gerusalemme: non vi spaurite, non temete: domani vi moverete contro di loro, e il Signore sarà con voi.
18 Jehoshaphat bowed his head, his face to the ground, and al Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem feldown before Yahweh to worship Yahweh.	18 Allora Josaphat, e tutto Giuda, e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostraron bocconi per terra dinanzi al Signore, e lo adorarono.
19 Then the Levites -- both the Kohathites and Korahites -- stood up to praise Yahweh, God of Israel, atthe top of their voices.	19 E i Leviti della stirpe di Caath, e della stirpe di Core davan laude al Signore Dio d'Israele con voce, che andava al cielo.
20 Early next morning they prepared to set out for the desert of Tekoa. As they were setting out,Jehoshaphat stood up and said, 'Listen to me, Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh yourGod and you wil be secure; believe in his prophets and you wil be successful.'	20 E la mattina seguente si mossero, e s'incamminarono pel deserto di Thecue: e mentre erano per istrada, Josaphat stando in piedi in mezzo di loro, disse: Udite me, uomini di Giuda, e abitanti di Gerusalemme: credete al Signore Dio vostro, e sarete senza timori: credete ai profeti di lui, e tutto anderà felicemente.
21 Then, having conferred with the people, he appointed singers who were to praise Yahweh and go outahead of the army in sacred vestments, singing Praise Yahweh, for his faithful love endures for ever!	21 E diede i suoi avvertimenti al popolo, e scelse dei cantori del Signore, i quali divisi in ischiere cantassero le sue lodi,e precedessero l'esercito, e tutti a una voce dicessero: Date lode al Signore, perchè la sua misericordia è eterna.
22 The moment they began their shouts of praise, Yahweh sprang an ambush on the Ammonites,Moabites and the people of Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and that was the end of them,	22 E quand'eglino ebber dato principio al canto, il Signore rivolse contro di lor medesimi gli stratagemmi de nemici, viene a dire' de, figliuoli di Ammon, e di Moab, e di quelli del monte Seir, che erano andati per combattere contro Giuda, e rimasero sconfitti.
23 for the Ammonites and Moabites turned on the people of Mount Seir, and put them under the curseof destruction and then, having finished off the people of Seir, set to work slaughtering one another.	23 Imperocché i figliuoli di Ammon, e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte di Seir, e li trucidarono, e li distrussero: e fatto questo, venuti in rotta tra di loro, si uccisero gli uni gli altri.
24 When Judah reached the point overlooking the desert and looked towards the horde, there werenothing but corpses lying on the ground; no one escaped.	24 E Giuda arrivato che fu alla vedetta che guarda il deserto, vide da lungi tutta la regione, quant'era spaziosa, piena di cadaveri, e non essere rimaso alcuno, che avesse fuggita la morte.
25 When Jehoshaphat arrived to take the booty, they found quantities of cattle and innumerablepossessions, clothes and valuables, which they seized for themselves; it was impossible to carry it, and it tookthem three days to collect it.	25 Andò adunque Josaphat, e con lui tutto il popolo a prendere le spoglie dei morti: e trovarono tra i cadaveri varie suppellettili, e vesti, e vasi di grandissimo pregio, e li presero, e duraron fatica a portar via ogni cosa in tre dì, tanta fu la preda.
26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed Yahweh -- hence theplace was given the name Val ey of Beracah, which it stil has today.	26 E il quarto giorno si raunarono nella Valle di Benedizione: imperocché atteso l'aver eglino quivi benedetto il Signore, diedero a quel luogo il nome di valle di Benedizione, che dura anche in oggi.
27 Then al the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem with Jehoshaphat at theirhead as Yahweh had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.	27 E tutta la gente di Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme, preceduti da Josaphat, con gran letizia, perchè il Signore avea dato loro di trionfar de' loro nemici.
28 To the sound of lyre, harp and trumpet they came to Jerusalem, to the Temple of Yahweh,	28 Ed entrarono in Gerusalemme, e nella casa del Signore al suono de' salteri, e delle cetre, e delle trombe.
29 and a panic from Yahweh seized al the neighbouring kings when they heard how Yahweh hadfought against the enemies of Israel.	29 E sopra tutti i regni circonvicini si sparse il timor del Signore, avendo udito in qual modo il Signore avea combattuto contro i nemici d'Israele.
30 And henceforth Jehoshaphat's reign was undisturbed, for his God gave him peace all round.	30 E il regno di Josaphat fu in pace, e il Signore gli diede tranquillità da tutte parti.
31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he came to the throne and hereigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.	31 Josaphat adunque regnò sopra Giuda, e avea trentacinque anni quando principiò a regnare: e regnò anni venticinque in Gerusalemme; e sua madre avea nome Azuba figliuola di Selahi.
32 He fol owed the example of his father Asa undeviatingly, doing what Yahweh regards as right.	32 E imitò il padre suo Asa, né in veruna cosa tralignò da lui, facendo quello, che era accetto nel cospetto del Signore.
33 The high places, however, were not abolished; the people had still not set their hearts on the God oftheir ancestors.	33 Egli però non tolse via i luoghi eccelsi, e il popolo non aveva ancora rivolto il cuor suo al Signore Dio de' padri loro.
34 The rest of the history of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, is written down in the records of Jehu son ofHanani, which are quoted in the Book of the Kings of Israel.	34 Il rimanente poi delle geste di Josaphat, le prime, e le ultime sono scritte nel libro di Jehu figliuolo di Hanani, il quale le espose nei libri dei re d'Israele.
35 Afterwards, Jehoshaphat formed a partnership with Ahaziah king of Israel, which was very wrong ofhim.	35 Dopo di ciò Josaphat re di Giuda fece amicizia con Ochozia re d'Israele, le opere del quale furono empie al sommo.
36 He joined him in building some ships to go to Tarshish; they built them at Ezion-Geber.	36 E si unì con lui a fare delle navi, che facessero il viaggio di Tharsis: e fecero un' armata navale in Asion-gaber.
37 Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah then prophesied against Jehoshaphat as fol ows, 'Becauseyou have become Ahaziah's partner, Yahweh has wrecked your efforts.' The ships were wrecked and werenever fit to sail for Tarshish.	37 Ma Eliezer figliuolo di Dodau di Maresa profetizzò, e disse a Josaphat: Perchè tu hai fatto lega con Ochozia, il Signore ha rovinati i tuoi disegni. E le navi andarono in pezzi, e non poterono fare il viaggio di Tharsis.
