NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
And Solomon allocated seventy thousand men to be porters and eighty thousand to quarry in the hillsand three thousand six hundred overseers for them.1 Et numeravit septuaginta milia virorum portantium umeris et octoginta milia, qui caederent lapides in montibus, praepositosque eorum tria milia sescentos.
And Solomon sent this message to Huram king of Tyre, 'Do as you did for my father David when yousent him cedars for him to build himself a palace to live in.2 Misit quoque ad Hiram regem Tyri dicens: “ Sicut egisti cum David patre meo et misisti ei ligna cedrina, ut aedificaret sibi domum ad habitandum in ea,
You see, I am building a house for the name of Yahweh my God, to acknowledge his holiness so thatperfumed incense may be burnt before him, the loaves of permanent offering be perpetual y laid out and theburnt offerings be made morning and evening, on the Sabbaths, New Moons and solemn festivals of Yahwehour God, as prescribed to Israel for ever;3 sic fac mecum, ut aedificem domum nomini Domini Dei mei, ut consecrem eam ad adolendum coram illo fumiganda aromata et ad propositionem panum sempiternam et ad holocautomata mane et vespere, sabbatis quoque et neomeniis et sollemnitatibus Domini Dei nostri in sempiternum, quae mandata sunt Israeli.
and the house which I am building must be large, for our God is greater than al gods;4 Domus enim, quam aedificare cupio, magna est; magnus est enim Deus noster super omnes deos.
even so, who would not find it an impossible task to build a house for him, when the heavens and theheavens of the heavens cannot contain him? And who am I to build a house for him except to burn incensebefore him?5 Quis ergo poterit praevalere, ut aedificet ei dignam domum? Si caelum et caeli caelorum capere eum nequeunt, quantus ego sum, ut possim aedificare ei domum? Sed ad hoc tantum, ut adoleatur incensum coram illo.
So now send me a man skil ed at working in gold, silver, bronze, iron, scarlet, crimson and violetmaterials, and who knows the art of engraving too; he is to work with my skil ed men in Judah and Jerusalem, whom my father David has provided.6 Mitte ergo mihi virum eruditum, qui noverit operari in auro et argento, aere et ferro, purpura, coccino et hyacintho, et qui sciat sculpere caelaturas cum his artificibus, quos mecum habeo in Iudaea et Ierusalem, quos praeparavit David pater meus.
Also send me cedar, juniper and algum trunks from the Lebanon, for I know that your servants knowthe art of fel ing timber in the Lebanon. And, my servants will work with your servants7 Sed et ligna cedrina mitte mihi et arceuthina et pinea de Libano; scio enim quod servi tui noverint caedere ligna de Libano, et erunt servi mei cum servis tuis,
in preparing a vast quantity of timber for me, since the house which I intend to build is to be of a size tomarvel at.8 ut parentur mihi ligna plurima; domus enim, quam cupio aedificare, magna erit nimis et inclita.
Furthermore, for the upkeep of the woodcutters whom you employ to cut the timber, I shal providetwenty thousand kor of wheat, twenty thousand kor of barley, twenty thousand bat of wine and twenty thousandbat of oil.'9 Praeterea operariis, qui caesuri sunt ligna, servis tuis dabo in cibaria tritici choros viginti milia et hordei choros totidem et vini viginti milia batos, olei quoque batos viginti milia ”.
In a letter sent to King Solomon, Huram king of Tyre replied, 'Because Yahweh loves his people hehas made you their king!'10 Dixit autem Hiram rex Tyri per litteras, quas miserat Salomoni: “ Quia dilexit Dominus populum suum, idcirco te regnare fecit super eum ”.
Huram went on to say, 'Praised be Yahweh, God of Israel, who made heaven and earth and has givenKing David a wise son, endowed with discretion and discernment, to build a house for Yahweh and a palace inwhich to reign!-11 Et addidit dicens: “ Benedictus Dominus, Deus Israel, qui fecit caelum et terram, qui dedit David regi filium sapientem et eruditum et sensatum atque prudentem, ut aedificaret domum Domino et palatium sibi.
I am now sending you a skil ed and intelligent man, Huram-Abi12 Misi ergo tibi virum prudentem et scientissimum Hiram magistrum meum,
the son of a Danite woman by a Tyrian father. He knows the arts of working in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, wood, scarlet, violet, fine linen and crimson materials, and is competent to carry out any kind ofengraving and to execute any design which may be entrusted to him, in col aboration with your skilled men andthose of my lord David, your father.13 filium mulieris de filiabus Dan, cuius pater fuit Tyrius, qui novit operari in auro et argento, aere et ferro et lapidibus et lignis, in purpura quoque et hyacintho et bysso et coccino, et qui scit caelare omnem sculpturam et adinvenire prudenter, quodcumque in opere necessarium est, cum artificibus tuis et cum artificibus domini mei David patris tui.
'So now let my lord send his servants the wheat, barley, oil and wine as promised14 Triticum ergo et hordeum et oleum et vinum, quae pollicitus es, domine mi, mitte servis tuis.
and we wil fel all the wood you need from Lebanon, and bring it you in rafts by sea to Jaffa; and it wilbe your responsibility to transport it to Jerusalem.'15 Nos autem caedemus ligna de Libano, quot necessaria habueris, et applicabimus ea ratibus per mare in Ioppe; tuum autem erit transferre ea in Ierusalem ”.
Solomon then took a census of al the aliens resident in Israel similar to the census which his fatherDavid had taken; it was found that there were a hundred and fifty-three thousand six hundred.16 Numeravit igitur Salomon omnes viros peregrinos, qui erant in terra Israel post dinumerationem, quam dinumeravit David pater eius; et inventi sunt centum quinquaginta milia et tria milia sescenti.
He impressed seventy thousand of them as porters, eighty thousand as quarrymen in the hil s andthree thousand six hundred as overseers to make sure the people worked.17 Fecitque ex eis septuaginta milia, qui umeris onera portarent, et octoginta milia, qui lapides in montibus caederent; tria autem milia et sescentos praepositos operum populi.
