1 Although Jehoshaphat enjoyed great wealth and honour, he al ied himself by marriage to Ahab.	1 ויהי ליהושפט עשר וכבוד לרב ויתחתן לאחאב
2 After some years he paid a visit to Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered an immense number of sheepand oxen for him and his retinue, to induce him to attack Ramoth-Gilead.	2 וירד לקץ שנים אל אחאב לשמרון ויזבח לו אחאב צאן ובקר לרב ולעם אשר עמו ויסיתהו לעלות אל רמות גלעד
3 Ahab king of Israel then said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 'Wil you come with me to Ramoth-Gilead?' He replied, 'I wil share in battle with you, my men with yours.'	3 ויאמר אחאב מלך ישראל אל יהושפט מלך יהודה התלך עמי רמת גלעד ויאמר לו כמוני כמוך וכעמך עמי ועמך במלחמה
4 Jehoshaphat, however, said to the king of Israel, 'First, please consult the word of Yahweh.'	4 ויאמר יהושפט אל מלך ישראל דרש נא כיום את דבר יהוה
5 So the king of Israel cal ed the prophets together, four hundred of them. 'Should we go and attackRamoth-Gilead,' he asked, 'or should I hold back?' 'March,' they replied, 'for God wil deliver it into the king'spower.'	5 ויקבץ מלך ישראל את הנבאים ארבע מאות איש ויאמר אלהם הנלך אל רמת גלעד למלחמה אם אחדל ויאמרו עלה ויתן האלהים ביד המלך
6 Jehoshaphat, however, said, 'Is there no other prophet of Yahweh here, for us to consult?'	6 ויאמר יהושפט האין פה נביא ליהוה עוד ונדרשה מאתו
7 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, 'There is one more man through whom we can consultYahweh, but I hate him because he never has a favourable prophecy for me, always unfavourable ones; he isMicaiah son of Imlah.' 'The king should not say such things,' said Jehoshaphat.	7 ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט עוד איש אחד לדרוש את יהוה מאתו ואני שנאתיהו כי איננו מתנבא עלי לטובה כי כל ימיו לרעה הוא מיכיהו בן ימלא ויאמר יהושפט אל יאמר המלך כן
8 The king of Israel then summoned a court official and said, 'Bring Micaiah son of Imlah immediately.'	8 ויקרא מלך ישראל אל סריס אחד ויאמר מהר מיכהו בן ימלא
9 The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, wearing their robes;in an open space just outside the gate of Samaria, with al the prophets prophesying before them,	9 ומלך ישראל ויהושפט מלך יהודה יושבים איש על כסאו מלבשים בגדים וישבים בגרן פתח שער שמרון וכל הנביאים מתנבאים לפניהם
10 Zedekiah son of Chenaanah, who had made himself some iron horns, said, 'Yahweh says, "Withhorns like these, you will gore the Aramaeans til you make an end of them." '	10 ויעש לו צדקיהו בן כנענה קרני ברזל ויאמר כה אמר יהוה באלה תנגח את ארם עד כלותם
11 And al the prophets prophesied in the same vein, saying, 'March on Ramoth-Gilead! Success issure, for Yahweh has already given it to the king!'	11 וכל הנבאים נבאים כן לאמר עלה רמת גלעד והצלח ונתן יהוה ביד המלך
12 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, 'Look! What the prophets are sayingis uniformly favourable to the king. So I hope you wil say the same as they do and speak favourably.'	12 והמלאך אשר הלך לקרא למיכיהו דבר אליו לאמר הנה דברי הנבאים פה אחד טוב אל המלך ויהי נא דברך כאחד מהם ודברת טוב
13 Micaiah said, 'As Yahweh lives, I shal speak exactly as Yahweh tells me!'	13 ויאמר מיכיהו חי יהוה כי את אשר יאמר אלהי אתו אדבר
14 When he came to the king, the king said, 'Micaiah, should we march to attack Ramoth-Gilead, orshould I hold back?' He replied, 'Go and conquer, Yahweh wil deliver them into your power!'	14 ויבא אל המלך ויאמר המלך אליו מיכה הנלך אל רמת גלעד למלחמה אם אחדל ויאמר עלו והצליחו וינתנו בידכם
15 The king went on, 'How often must I put you on oath to tel me nothing but the truth in the name ofYahweh?'	15 ויאמר אליו המלך עד כמה פעמים אני משביעך אשר לא תדבר אלי רק אמת בשם יהוה
16 Then he spoke out. I saw al Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep without a shepherd. AndYahweh said, 'These have no master, let them all go peaceful y home!'	16 ויאמר ראיתי את כל ישראל נפוצים על ההרים כצאן אשר אין להן רעה ויאמר יהוה לא אדנים לאלה ישובו איש לביתו בשלום
17 At this the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'Did I not tell you that he never gives me favourableprophecies, but only unfavourable ones?'	17 ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט הלא אמרתי אליך לא יתנבא עלי טוב כי אם לרע
18 Micaiah went on, 'Now listen to the word of Yahweh. I saw Yahweh seated on his throne with thewhole array of heaven standing on his right and on his left.	18 ויאמר לכן שמעו דבר יהוה ראיתי את יהוה יושב על כסאו וכל צבא השמים עמדים על ימינו ושמאלו
19 Yahweh said, "Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into marching to his death at Ramoth-Gilead?" Atwhich some answered one way, and some another.	19 ויאמר יהוה מי יפתה את אחאב מלך ישראל ויעל ויפל ברמות גלעד ויאמר זה אמר ככה וזה אמר ככה
20 A spirit then came forward and stood before Yahweh and said, "I wil entice him." "How?" Yahweh asked.	20 ויצא הרוח ויעמד לפני יהוה ויאמר אני אפתנו ויאמר יהוה אליו במה
21 He replied, "I shall go and be a deceptive spirit in the mouths of all his prophets." Yahweh said, "You wil succeed in enticing him. Go and do it."	21 ויאמר אצא והייתי לרוח שקר בפי כל נביאיו ויאמר תפתה וגם תוכל צא ועשה כן
22 And now, you see, Yahweh has put a deceptive spirit into the mouths of your prophets here, for infact Yahweh has pronounced disaster on you.'	22 ועתה הנה נתן יהוה רוח שקר בפי נביאיך אלה ויהוה דבר עליך רעה
23 Zedekiah son of Chenaanah then came up, struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, 'Which way didYahweh's spirit leave me, to speak to you?'	23 ויגש צדקיהו בן כנענה ויך את מיכיהו על הלחי ויאמר אי זה הדרך עבר רוח יהוה מאתי לדבר אתך
24 'That is what you wil find out,' Micaiah retorted, 'the day you go from room to room, trying to hide.'	24 ויאמר מיכיהו הנך ראה ביום ההוא אשר תבוא חדר בחדר להחבא
25 The king of Israel said, 'Seize Micaiah and hand him over to Amon governor of the city, and Joashthe king's son,	25 ויאמר מלך ישראל קחו את מיכיהו והשיבהו אל אמון שר העיר ואל יואש בן המלך
26 and say, "These are the king's orders: Put this man in prison and feed him on nothing but bread andwater until I am safely home." '	26 ואמרתם כה אמר המלך שימו זה בית הכלא והאכלהו לחם לחץ ומים לחץ עד שובי בשלום
27 Micaiah said, 'If you ever do get home safely, Yahweh has not spoken through me.'	27 ויאמר מיכיהו אם שוב תשוב בשלום לא דבר יהוה בי ויאמר שמעו עמים כלם
28 The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah marched on Ramoth-Gilead.	28 ויעל מלך ישראל ויהושפט מלך יהודה אל רמת גלעד
29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'I shall disguise myself to go into battle, but you put on yourrobes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.	29 ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט התחפש ובוא במלחמה ואתה לבש בגדיך ויתחפש מלך ישראל ויבאו במלחמה
30 Now, the king of Aram had given his chariot commanders the fol owing order, 'Do not attack anyoneof whatever rank, except the king of Israel.'	30 ומלך ארם צוה את שרי הרכב אשר לו לאמר לא תלחמו את הקטן את הגדול כי אם את מלך ישראל לבדו
31 So, when the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, 'That is the king of Israel,' andsurrounded him to attack. But when Jehoshaphat shouted his war cry, Yahweh came to his help, God drew themaway from him,	31 ויהי כראות שרי הרכב את יהושפט והמה אמרו מלך ישראל הוא ויסבו עליו להלחם ויזעק יהושפט ויהוה עזרו ויסיתם אלהים ממנו
32 for the chariot commanders, realising that he was not the king of Israel, broke off their pursuit.	32 ויהי כראות שרי הרכב כי לא היה מלך ישראל וישבו מאחריו
33 Someone, however, drawing his bow without any special aim, shot the king of Israel between thejoints of his armour. 'Turn about!' he said to his charioteer. 'Get me out of the fighting; I am col apsing.'	33 ואיש משך בקשת לתמו ויך את מלך ישראל בין הדבקים ובין השרין ויאמר לרכב הפך ידיך והוצאתני מן המחנה כי החליתי
34 But the battle grew fiercer as the day went on, and the king of Israel had to be held upright in hischariot facing the Aramaeans until the evening, and at sunset he died.	34 ותעל המלחמה ביום ההוא ומלך ישראל היה מעמיד במרכבה נכח ארם עד הערב וימת לעת בוא השמש
