NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Asa did what Yahweh his God regards as good and right.	1 Abia si addormentò coi suoi padri, fu sepolto nella città di David, e Asa suo figlio gli successe nel regno. Al suo tempo il pae­se ebbe riposo per dieci anni.
2 He abolished the foreign altars and the high places, broke the pil ars, cut down the sacred poles,	2 Asa fece quel che era buono e gradito davanti al suo Dio; atterrò gli altari del culto straniero e gli alti luoghi;
3 and urged Judah to seek Yahweh, God of their ancestors, and to observe the law and commandment.	3 spezzò le statue, tagliò i boschetti sacri;
4 Because he abolished the high places and incense altars through the towns of Judah, the kingdomunder him was undisturbed.	4 comandò a Giuda di cercare il Signore Dio dei loro padri, e di osservare la legge e tutti quanti i comandamenti.
5 He rebuilt the fortified towns of Judah, since the country was at peace and free of war during thoseyears, because Yahweh had granted him peace.	5 Tolse da tutte le città di Giuda gli altari e i templi, e re­gnò in pace.
6 'Let us rebuild these towns,' he told Judah, 'let us surround them with wal and tower, with gate andbar while the country is still ours, for we have sought Yahweh our God and he has sought us and given us peaceal around.' They built and prospered.	6 Egli edificò pure delle città forti in Giuda, perchè aveva pace, e nessuna guerra era sorta al suo tempo: il Signore donava la pace.
7 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men of Judah armed with shields and spears and twohundred and eighty thousand men of Benjamin armed with shields and bows, al of them outstanding soldiers.	7 Per questo egli disse a Giuda: « Edifichiamo que­ste città, circondiamole di mura, fortifichiamole con torri, porte e sbarre, mentre da ogni parte abbiamo respiro dalle guerre, perchè abbiamo cercato il Signore Dio dei padri nostri, ed egli ci ha dato pace da ogni parte ». Allora le edificarono, e durante la costruzione non vi fu ostacolo alcuno.
8 Zerah the Cushite took the field against them with an army a mil ion strong and three hundredchariots, and penetrated to Mareshah.	8 Asa aveva nel suo esercito trecento mila uomini di Giuda che portavano scudo e lancia e duecent'ottanta mila uomini di Beniamino, armati di scudo e di arco, tutti uomini fortissimi.
9 Asa took the field against him and the battle-lines were drawn up in the Valley of Zephathah, atMareshah.	9 Or Zara, Etiope, uscì contro di essi col suo esercito d'un milione d'uomini e trecento carri, e si avanzò fino a Maresa.
10 Asa then cal ed on Yahweh his God and said, 'Yahweh, numbers and strength make no difference toyou when you give your help. Help us, Yahweh our God, for, relying on you, we are confronting this horde inyour name. Yahweh, you are our God. Human strength cannot prevail against you!'	10 Ma Asa gli andò incontro. Ordinato l'esercito alla battaglia nella valle di Sefata presso Maresa,
11 Yahweh routed the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled,	11 invocò il Signore Dio, dicendo: « Si­gnore, per te non v'è alcuna differenza tra il dar soccorso con piccolo numero e il darlo con un numero grande: aiutaci, o Signore Dio nostro, perchè fiduciosi in te e nel tuo nome siam venuti contro questa moltitudine. Si­gnore, tu sei il nostro Dio: non prevalga un uomo contro di te ».
12 and Asa pursued them with his army as far as Gerar. So many of the Cushites fel that they wereunable to survive. They were cut to pieces by Yahweh and his army. They carried off a great deal of booty,	12 Allora il Signore atterrì gli Etiopi dinanzi ad Asa e a Giuda. Gli Etiopi fuggirono,
13 they destroyed al the towns round Gerar -- for a panic from Yahweh had seized the towns -- andplundered all the towns since they were ful of loot.	13 e Asa colla sua gente li, inseguì fino a Gerara. Gli Etiopi perirono fino allo sterminio, perchè furon fatti a pezzi dal Signore che li percuoteva e dal suo esercito che combatteva. Così, preso gran bottino,
14 They also routed the cattle-owners and carried off great numbers of sheep and camels; then theyreturned to Jerusalem.	14 percosse tutte le città intorno a Gerara, perchè in tutti era piombato il terrore; saccheggiate le città e presane molta preda,
	15 distrutti anche i parchi delle pecore e menato via infinito numero di bestiami e di cammelli, se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme.
