NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Solomon son of David then made himself secure over his kingdom. Yahweh his God was with him, making him more and more powerful.1 Confortatus est ergo Salomon filius David in regno suo, et Dominus Deus ejus erat cum eo, et magnificavit eum in excelsum.
Solomon then spoke to al Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges andto every leader in all Israel, the heads of families.2 Præcepitque Salomon universo Israëli, tribunis, et centurionibus, et ducibus, et judicibus omnis Israël, et principibus familiarum :
Solomon, and the whole assembly with him, then went to the high place at Gibeon, where God's Tentof Meeting was, which Moses, servant of God, had made in the desert.3 et abiit cum universa multitudine in excelsum Gabaon, ubi erat tabernaculum fœderis Dei, quod fecit Moyses famulus Dei in solitudine.
The ark of the covenant, however, David had brought from Kiriath-Jearim to the place which he hadprepared for it, having pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.4 Arcam autem Dei adduxerat David de Cariathiarim in locum quem præparaverat ei, et ubi fixerat illi tabernaculum, hoc est, in Jerusalem.
The bronze altar which Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, had made was there, in front of Yahweh'sDwelling, where Solomon and the assembly consulted him.5 Altare quoque æneum quod fabricatus fuerat Beseleel filius Uri filii Hur, ibi erat coram tabernaculo Domini : quod et requisivit Salomon, et omnis ecclesia.
There Solomon presented a burnt offering before Yahweh on the bronze altar of the Tent of Meeting, making on it one thousand burnt offerings.6 Ascenditque Salomon ad altare æneum, coram tabernaculo fœderis Domini, et obtulit in eo mille hostias.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said, 'Ask what you would like me to give you.'7 Ecce autem in ipsa nocte apparuit ei Deus, dicens : Postula quod vis, ut dem tibi.
Solomon replied to God, 'You showed most faithful love to David my father, and you have made meking in succession to him.8 Dixitque Salomon Deo : Tu fecisti cum David patre meo misericordiam magnam, et constituisti me regem pro eo.
Yahweh God, the promise you made to David my father has now been fulfil ed, since you have mademe king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.9 Nunc ergo Domine Deus, impleatur sermo tuus quem pollicitus es David patri meo : tu enim me fecisti regem super populum tuum multum, qui tam innumerabilis est quam pulvis terræ.
Therefore give me wisdom and knowledge to act as leader of this people, for how otherwise couldsuch a great people as yours be governed?'10 Da mihi sapientiam et intelligentiam, ut ingrediar et egrediar coram populo tuo : quis enim potest hunc populum tuum digne, qui tam grandis est, judicare ?
'Since that is what you want,' God said to Solomon, 'since you have asked, not for riches, treasure, honour, the lives of your enemies, or even for a long life, but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people ofwhom I have made you king,11 Dixit autem Deus ad Salomonem : Quia hoc magis placuit cordi tuo, et non postulasti divitias, et substantiam, et gloriam, neque animas eorum qui te oderant, sed nec dies vitæ plurimos : petisti autem sapientiam et scientiam, ut judicare possis populum meum super quem constitui te regem :
therefore wisdom and knowledge are granted you. I give you riches too, and treasure, and honoursuch as no king had before you and none will have after you.'12 sapientia et scientia data sunt tibi : divitias autem et substantiam et gloriam dabo tibi, ita ut nullus in regibus nec ante te nec post te fuerit similis tui.
So Solomon came away from the high place at Gibeon, from the Tent of Meeting, to Jerusalem andreigned over Israel.13 Venit ergo Salomon ab excelso Gabaon in Jerusalem coram tabernaculo fœderis, et regnavit super Israël.
Solomon then built up a force of chariots and cavalry; he had one thousand four hundred chariots andtwelve thousand horses; these he kept in the chariot towns and near the king at Jerusalem.14 Congregavitque sibi currus et equites, et facti sunt ei mille quadringenti currus, et duodecim millia equitum : et fecit eos esse in urbibus quadrigarum, et cum rege in Jerusalem.
In Jerusalem the king made silver and gold as common as stones, and cedar wood as plentiful assycamore in the lowlands.15 Præbuitque rex argentum et aurum in Jerusalem quasi lapides, et cedros quasi sycomoros quæ nascuntur in campestribus multitudine magna.
Solomon's horses were imported from Muzur and Cilicia. The king's dealers acquired them in Cilicia atthe prevailing price.16 Adducebantur autem ei equi de Ægypto et de Coa a negotiatoribus regis, qui ibant et emebant pretio,
A chariot was imported from Egypt for six hundred silver shekels and a horse from Cilicia for ahundred and fifty. They also supplied the Hittite and Aramaean kings, who al used them as middlemen.17 quadrigam equorum sexcentis argenteis, et equum centum quinquaginta : similiter de universis regnis Hethæorum, et a regibus Syriæ emptio celebrabatur.
Solomon then gave the order to build a house for the name of Yahweh and a palace in which to reign.
