NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham became king of Judah.1 Anno septimo decimo Phacee filii Romeliae regnavit Achaz filius Ioatham regis Iudae.
Ahaz was twenty years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do what Yahweh his God regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.2 Viginti annorum erat Achaz, cum regnare coepisset, et sedecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem; non fecit, quod erat placitum in conspectu Domini Dei sui, sicut David pater eius,
He followed the example of the kings of Israel, even causing his son to pass through the fire ofsacrifice, also copying the disgusting practices of the nations whom Yahweh had dispossessed for the Israelites.3 sed ambulavit in via regum Israel. Insuper et filium suum consecravit transferens per ignem secundum abominationes gentium, quas dissipavit Dominus coram filiis Israel;
He offered sacrifices and incense on the high places, on the hil s and under every luxuriant tree.4 immolabat quoque et adolebat in excelsis et in collibus et sub omni ligno frondoso.
Then it was that Razon king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, launched theircampaign against Jerusalem. They besieged it but could not reduce it.5 Tunc ascendit Rasin rex Syriae et Phacee filius Romeliae rex Israel in Ierusalem ad proeliandum; cumque obsiderent Achaz, non valuerunt superare eum.
(At that time, the king of Edom recovered Elath for Edom; he drove the Judaeans out of Elath, and theEdomites occupied it and have been there ever since.)6 In tempore illo restituit Rasin rex Syriae Ailath ad Edom et eiecit Iudaeos de Ailath; et Idumaei venerunt in Ailath et habitaverunt ibi usque in diem hanc.
Ahaz then sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria to say, 'I am your servant and your son.Come and rescue me from the king of Aram and the king of Israel who are making war on me.'7 Misit autem Achaz nuntios ad Theglathphalasar regem Assyriorum dicens: “ Servus tuus et filius tuus ego sum. Ascende et salvum me fac de manu regis Syriae et de manu regis Israel, qui consurrexerunt adversum me ”.
And Ahaz took what silver and gold was to be found in the Temple of Yahweh and in the palacetreasury, and sent this as a present to the king of Assyria.8 Et cum collegisset argentum et aurum, quod invenire potuit in domo Domini et in thesauris regis, misit regi Assyriorum munera.
The king of Assyria granted his request and, marching on Damascus, captured it; he deported itspopulation to Kir and put Razon to death.9 Qui et acquievit voluntati eius. Ascendit enim rex Assyriorum in Damascum et vastavit eam et transtulit habitatores eius in Cir; Rasin autem interfecit.
When King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, he saw the altar whichwas in Damascus. King Ahaz then sent a picture and model of the altar, with details of its construction, to Uriahthe priest.10 Perrexitque rex Achaz in occursum Theglathphalasar regis Assyriorum in Damascum. Cumque vidisset altare Damasci, misit rex Achaz ad Uriam sacerdotem exemplar eius et descriptionem omnis operis eius.
Uriah the priest constructed the altar; al the instructions sent by King Ahaz from Damascus werecarried out by Uriah the priest before King Ahaz returned from Damascus.11 Exstruxitque Urias sacerdos altare; iuxta omnia, quae miserat rex Achaz de Damasco, ita fecit Urias sacerdos, donec veniret rex Achaz de Damasco.
When the king arrived from Damascus, he inspected the altar, he approached it and ascended it.12 Cumque venisset rex de Damasco, vidit altare et accessit ad illud ascenditque
And on the altar he made his burnt offering and his oblation; he poured out his libation and sprinkledthe blood of his communion sacrifices.13 et adolevit holocausta sua et oblationes et libavit libamina et fudit sanguinem pacificorum suorum super altare.
The altar which used to stand before Yahweh he removed from the front of the Temple, where it hadstood between the new altar and the Temple of Yahweh, and placed it at the north side of the new altar.14 Porro altare aeneum, quod erat coram Domino, transtulit de facie templi et de loco inter altare et templum Domini posuitque illud ex latere altaris ad aquilonem.
King Ahaz gave this order to Uriah the priest, 'In future you wil present the morning burnt offering, theevening oblation, the king's burnt offering and oblation, the burnt offering, the oblation and the libations of al thepeople of the country on the large altar; on it you will pour out al the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. As regards the bronze altar, I shal see to that.'15 Praecepit quoque rex Achaz Uriae sacerdoti dicens: “ Super altare maius offer holocaustum matutinum et oblationem vespertinam et holocaustum regis et oblationem eius et holocaustum universi populi terrae et oblationem eorum et libamina eorum; et omnem sanguinem holocausti et universum sanguinem sacrificii super illud effundes. De altari vero aeneo erit mihi deliberandum ”.
Uriah the priest did everything that King Ahaz had ordered.16 Fecit igitur Urias sacerdos iuxta omnia, quae praeceperat rex Achaz.
King Ahaz broke up the wheeled stands; removed the crosspieces and the basins from them, andtook the bronze Sea off the oxen supporting it, and rested it on the stone pavement.17 Excidit autem rex Achaz limbos basium et removit luterem, qui erat desuper, et mare deposuit de bobus aeneis, qui sustentabant illud, et posuit super pavimentum stratum lapide.
And from the Temple of Yahweh, in deference to the king of Assyria, he removed the dais for thethrone which had been built inside, and the royal entrance on the outside.18 Musach (id est Porticum) quoque sabbati, quod aedificatum erat in templo, et ingressum regis exterius convertit in templo Domini propter regem Assyriorum.
The rest of the history of Ahaz, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah?19 Reliqua autem gestorum Achaz, quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae?
Then Ahaz fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David; his son Hezekiahsucceeded him.20 Dormivitque Achaz cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David; et regnavit Ezechias filius eius pro eo.
