NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Solomon became the son-in-law of Pharaoh king of Egypt; he married Pharaoh's daughter, and took herto the City of David until he could complete the building of his palace, the Temple of Yahweh and the ramparts ofJerusalem.	1 Salomon devint gendre du Pharaon d’Égypte; il épousa la fille du Pharaon et la mena dans la cité de David, car il n’avait pas encore fini de construire sa maison, la maison de Yahvé et le rempart de Jérusalem.
2 The people, however, were stil sacrificing on the high places, because at that time a dwel ing-place forthe name of Yahweh had not yet been built.	2 Le peuple offrait alors des sacrifices sur les Hauts-Lieux car la maison destinée au Nom de Yahvé n’était pas encore bâtie.
3 Solomon loved Yahweh: he fol owed the precepts of his father David, except that he offered sacrificeand incense on the high places.	3 Salomon aimait Yahvé, il marchait selon les préceptes de son père David, mais il offrait des sacrifices sur les Hauts-Lieux et y brûlait des parfums.
4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, since that was the principal high place -- Solomon presenteda thousand burnt offerings on that altar.	4 Le roi se rendit à Gabaon pour y offrir des sacrifices; c’était le Haut-Lieu principal et Salomon offrit mille holocaustes sur cet autel.
5 At Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream during the night. God said, 'Ask what you wouldlike me to give you.'	5 Là, à Gabaon, Yahvé apparut en songe à Salomon pendant la nuit. Il lui dit: “Demande-moi ce que tu veux et je te le donnerai.”
6 Solomon replied, 'You showed most faithful love to your servant David, my father, when he lived his lifebefore you in faithfulness and uprightness and integrity of heart; you have continued this most faithful love to himby al owing a son of his to sit on his throne today.	6 Salomon répondit: “Tu as montré une très grande bonté à ton serviteur David, mon père; il est vrai qu’il marchait en ta présence dans la fidélité, la justice et la sincérité. Tu n’as pas mis fin à cette grande bonté à son égard: tu as voulu que son fils soit assis aujourd’hui sur son trône.
7 Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am avery young man, unskilled in leadership.	7 Tu m’as fait roi, Yahvé, mon Dieu, à la place de mon père David. Mais je ne suis qu’un tout jeune homme et je ne sais encore pas agir.
8 And here is your servant, surrounded with your people whom you have chosen, a people so numerousthat its number cannot be counted or reckoned.	8 Ton serviteur se retrouve avec ton peuple, que tu as choisi toi-même, et c’est un peuple si nombreux qu’on ne peut ni l’évaluer, ni le compter.
9 So give your servant a heart to understand how to govern your people, how to discern between goodand evil, for how could one otherwise govern such a great people as yours?'	9 Accorde donc à ton serviteur l’intelligence pour distinguer entre le bien et le mal lorsqu’il gouverne ton peuple. Qui pourrait en effet bien gouverner un peuple aussi important?”
10 It pleased Yahweh that Solomon should have asked for this.	10 La demande de Salomon plut au Seigneur,
11 'Since you have asked for this,' God said, 'and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the livesof your enemies but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself,	11 et Dieu lui dit: “Je retiens que tu n’as demandé pour toi ni une longue vie, ni la richesse, ni la mort de tes ennemis. Parce que tu m’as fait cette autre demande, parce que tu m’as demandé l’intelligence pour exercer la justice,
12 here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as no one has had before and noone will have after you.	12 je vais faire ce que tu m’as demandé. Je te donne un cœur sage et intelligent, tel qu’il n’y en a pas eu de pareil avant toi et qu’il n’y en aura pas de pareil après toi.
13 What you have not asked I shal give you too: such riches and glory as no other king can match.	13 Et je te donnerai même ce que tu n’as pas demandé: tu auras richesse et gloire plus qu’aucun autre roi de la terre durant ta vie.
14 And I shal give you a long life, if you fol ow my ways, keeping my laws and commandments, as yourfather David followed them.'	14 Si tu marches dans mes voies, si tu observes mes ordonnances et mes commandements comme l’a fait ton père David, je te donnerai longue vie.”
15 Then Solomon woke up; it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the ark ofthe covenant of Yahweh; he presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices and held a banquet for allthose in his service.	15 Alors Salomon s’éveilla: il comprit que c’était un rêve. Une fois rentré à Jérusalem, il alla officier face à l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion; puis il donna un grand repas à tous ses serviteurs.
16 Later two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.	16 Deux prostituées vinrent au tribunal du roi.
17 'If it please you, my lord,' one of the women said, 'this woman and I live in the same house, and whileshe was in the house I gave birth to a child.	17 L’une d’elles lui dit: “Je t’en prie, mon seigneur, cette femme et moi nous habitons la même maison et dans cette maison j’ai donné le jour à un enfant.
18 Now it happened on the third day after my delivery that this woman also gave birth to a child. We werealone together; there was no one else in the house with us; just the two of us in the house.	18 Trois jours après la naissance, elle aussi a mis au monde un enfant. Nous étions ensemble, aucune personne étrangère avec nous, nous étions seules dans la maison.
19 Now one night this woman's son died; she overlaid him.	19 Or, durant la nuit, le fils de cette femme est mort car elle s’était couchée sur lui.
20 And in the middle of the night she got up and took my son from beside me while your servant wasasleep; she took him in her arms and put her own dead son in mine.	20 Alors elle se lève au milieu de la nuit, elle prend mon fils à côté de moi tandis que je dors, elle le couche sur elle et elle place son fils mort à côté de moi.
21 When I got up to suckle my child, there he was, dead. But in the morning I looked at him carefully, andhe was not the child I had borne at al .'	21 Au matin, lorsque je me lève pour allaiter mon fils, je vois qu’il est mort, mais en regardant attentivement, je m’aperçois que ce n’est pas l’enfant que j’ai mis au monde.”
22 Then the other woman spoke. 'That is not true! My son is the live one, yours is the dead one'; and thefirst retorted, 'That is not true! Your son is the dead one, mine is the live one.' And so they wrangled before theking.	22 À ce moment l’autre femme se met à crier: “C’est mon fils qui est vivant et c’est ton fils qui est mort!” Et la première réplique: “Ce n’est pas vrai, c’est ton fils qui est mort, le mien est en vie!” Et elles se disputaient ainsi devant le roi.
23 'This one says,' the king observed, ' "My son is the one who is alive; your son is dead," while the other says, "That is not true! Your son is the dead one, mine is the live one."	23 Le roi prit la parole: “Tu dis, toi: C’est mon fils qui est vivant et c’est ton fils qui est mort. Et toi tu dis: Non! C’est ton fils qui est mort et c’est le mien qui est vivant.”
24 Bring me a sword,' said the king; and a sword was brought into the king's presence.	24 Le roi ordonna: “Apportez-moi une épée.” On apporta l’épée devant le roi.
25 'Cut the living child in two,' the king said, 'and give half to one, half to the other.'	25 Le roi dit alors: “Coupez en deux l’enfant qui vit, et donnez-en la moitié à l’une et l’autre moitié à l’autre.”
26 At this the woman who was the mother of the living child addressed the king, for she felt acutely for herson. 'I beg you, my lord,' she said, 'let them give her the live child; on no account let them kil him!' But the othersaid, 'He shal belong to neither of us. Cut him in half!'	26 Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant dit au roi, car elle était bouleversée dans son cœur de mère: “Non, je t’en prie, mon seigneur, donne-lui plutôt l’enfant qui vit, qu’on ne le tue pas.” Mais l’autre répliquait: “Il ne sera ni à toi, ni à moi, partagez-le.”
27 Then the king gave his decision. 'Give the live child to the first woman,' he said, 'and do not kill him.She is his mother.'	27 Alors le roi décida: “Donnez l’enfant qui vit à la première, ne le tuez pas; c’est elle qui est la mère.”
28 Al Israel came to hear of the judgement which the king had pronounced and held the king in awe,recognising that he possessed divine wisdom for dispensing justice.	28 Tout Israël entendit parler du jugement que le roi avait prononcé; dès lors on eut un grand respect pour le roi car on voyait que la sagesse de Dieu était en lui lorsqu’il rendait la justice.
