1 A long time went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, 'Go, present yourself toAhab, and I wil send rain on the country.'	1 Dopo molti giorni, nel terzo anno, la parola del Signore fu indirizzata ad Elia in questi termini: « Va e mostrati ad Acab, affinchè io faccia cadere la pioggia sopra la terra ».
2 So Elijah set off to present himself to Ahab. As the famine was particularly severe in Samaria,	2 Ed Elia partì per mostrarsi ad Acab. La carestia era terribile in Samaria,
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, the master of the palace -- Obadiah held Yahweh in great reverence:	3 e Acab chiamò Abdia, maggiordomo di casa sua, il quale temeva molto il Signore:
4 when Jezebel was butchering the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred of them and hid them,fifty at a time, in a cave, and kept them provided with food and water-	4 infatti quando Gezabele uccideva i profeti del Signore, egli prese cento profeti e ne nascose cinquanta in una caverna e cinquanta in un'altra, e somministrò loro il pane e l'acqua.
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, 'Come along, we must scour the country, all the springs and all the ravinesin the hope of finding grass to keep horses and mules alive, or we shall have to slaughter some of our stock.'	5 Disse adunque Acab ad Abdia: « Va per tutto il paese, a tutte le fontane, in tutte le valli, per vedere se si trova dell'erba per salvare i cavalli e i muli, chè non sia distrutto il bestiame ».
6 They divided the country for the purpose of their survey; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiahwent another way by himself.	6 Spartitesi le regioni per farne il giro, Acab andava da una parte Abdia dall'altra, separatamente.
7 While Obadiah was on his way, whom should he meet but Elijah. Recognising him he fel on his faceand said, 'So it is you, my lord Elijah!'	7 Mentre Abdia se ne andava per la strada, Elia gli andò incontro, e Abdia, riconosciutolo, gli si prostrò dinanzi e disse: « Sei tu Elia, mio signore? »
8 'Yes,' he replied, 'go and tel your master, "Elijah is here." '	8 Egli rispose: « Sì, son io. Va a dire al tuo signore: Elia è qui ».
9 But Obadiah said, 'What sin I have committed, for you to put your servant into Ahab's power and causemy death?	9 Ma Abdia a lui: « Che peccato ho fatto, disse, chè tu dài me tuo servo nelle mani di Acab, perchè egli mi faccia morire?
10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent in search ofyou; and when they said, "He is not there," he made the kingdom or nation swear an oath that they did not knowwhere you were.	10 Viva il Signore Dio tuo! Non v'è nazione nè regno dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti, e siccome tutti gli rispondevano: Qui non c'è, egli fe' giurare ogni regno ed ogni nazione di non averti trovato.
11 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here."	11 Ed ora tu mi dici: Va a dire al tuo signore: Elia è qui.
12 But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh wil carry you away and I shal not know where; I shalgo and tel Ahab; he wil not be able to find you, and then he wil kil me. Yet from his youth your servant hasrevered Yahweh.	12 Poi, quando io sarò partito da te, lo Spirito del Signore ti trasporterà in luogo da me sconosciuto, e quando io sarò entrato ad avvertire Acab, egli, non trovandoti, mi farà ammazzare. Or il tuo servo teme il Signore sin dall'infanzia.
13 Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid ahundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water?	13 Non ti fu ridetto, signor mio, quel che io feci quando Gezabele uccideva i profeti del Signore? Com'io nascosi cento profeti del Signore, cinquanta in una caverna e cinquanta in un'altra, e loro somministrai il pane e l'acqua?
14 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here." Why, he wil kill me!'	14 Ed ora mi dici: Va a dire al tuo signore: Elia è qui: perchè egli mi faccia ammazzare ».
15 Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shal present myself to him today!'	15 Allora Elia disse: « Viva il Signore degli eserciti, davanti al cui cospetto io sto! Oggi io comparirò davanti ad Acab ».
16 Obadiah went to find Ahab and tel him the news, and Ahab then went to find Elijah.	16 Abdia andò a trovare Acab e l'avvertì; e Acab andò incontro ad Eiia.
17 When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, 'So there you are, you scourge of Israel!'	17 Appena lo vide, disse: « Sei tu colui che conturbi Israele?»
18 'Not I,' he replied, 'I am not the scourge of Israel, you and your family are; because you have desertedYahweh and fol owed Baal.	18 Elia rispose: «Non io ho turbato Israele; ma tu e la casa di tuo padre, che, abbandonati i comandamenti del Signore, siete andati dietro ai Baal.
19 Now give orders for all Israel to gather round me on Mount Carmel, and also the four hundredprophets of Baal who eat at Jezebel's table.'	19 Or dunque raduna davanti a me, sul monte Carmelo, tutto Israele, i quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal, i quattrocento profeti dei boschetti sacri, che mangiano alla tavola di Gezabele ».
20 Ahab cal ed al Israel together and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	20 Acab mandò a tutti i figli d'Israele, e radunò i profeti sul monte del Carmelo.
21 Elijah stepped out in front of al the people. 'How long', he said, 'do you mean to hobble first on oneleg then on the other? If Yahweh is God, follow him; if Baal, fol ow him.' But the people had nothing to say.	21 Avvicinatosi Elia a tutto il popolo, disse: « Fino a quando zoppicherete da due parti? Se il Signore è Dio, seguitelo; se lo è Baal, seguite lui ». Il popolo non fiatò.
22 Elijah then said to them, 'I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, while the prophets of Baal arefour hundred and fifty.	22 Allora Elia seguitò a dire al popolo: « Dei profeti del Signore son rimasto io solo; mentre i profeti di Baal sono quattrocentocinquanta uomini.
23 Let two bulls be given us; let them choose one for themselves, dismember it but not set fire to it. I inmy turn shal prepare the other bul , but not set fire to it.	23 Ma ci sian dati due buoi; essi scelgano un bue per loro, lo facciano in pezzi, e lo pongano sopra le legna, senza però mettervi il fuoco. Io poi preparerò l'altro bue, io porrò sopra le legna, senza mettervi il fuoco.
24 You must cal on the name of your god, and I shal cal on the name of Yahweh; the god who answerswith fire, is God indeed.' The people al answered, 'Agreed!'	24 Voi invocate il nome dei vostri dèi, io invocherò il nome del mio Signore, e quel dio che esaudirà per mezzo del fuoco, quello sia Dio ». Tutto il popolo rispose e disse: « Ottima proposta ».
25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one bul and begin, for there are more of you. Call onthe name of your god but light no fire.'	25 Allora Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: « Sceglietevi il bue, e fate voi i primi, perchè voi siete in maggior numero; invocate i nomi dei vostri dèi, ma non vi mettete il fuoco ».
26 They took the bul and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. 'OBaal, answer us!' they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance roundthe altar which they had made.	26 Essi, preso il bue che egli aveva loro con segnato, lo immolarono, e poi si misero a invocare il nome di Baal, dalla mattina al mezzogiorno, dicendo: « Baal, esaudiscici ». Ma non c'era voce che rispondesse; ed essi saltavano davanti all'altare che avevan fatto.
27 Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. 'Cal louder,' he said, 'for he is a god: he is preoccupied or heis busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and needs to be woken up!'	27 A mezzogiorno Elia si mise a beffeggiarli, dicendo: « Gridate più forte; è un Dio, e forse sta a parlare, o è all'osteria, o in viaggio, può essere che dorma, e bisogna svegliarlo ».
28 So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears untilthe blood flowed down them.	28 Ed essi allora a gridare ad alta voce, a farsi delle incisioni, secondo il loro costume, con coltelli e lancette sino a bagnarsi tutti di sangue.
29 Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time when the offering is presented; but there was novoice, no answer, no sign of attention.	29 Anche dopo il mezzogiorno essi stettero a profetare fino al tempo in cui suole offrirsi il sacrifizio, ma non si sentiva voce o qualcheduno che rispondesse e desse retta a quelli che pregavano.
30 Then Elijah said to al the people, 'Come over to me,' and al the people came over to him. Herepaired Yahweh's altar which had been torn down.	30 Allora Elia disse a tutto il popolo: « Accostatevi a me ». Quand'ebbe d'intorno il popolo Elia restaurò l'altare del Signore che era stato distrutto;
31 Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom theword of Yahweh had come, 'Israel is to be your name,'	31 e, prese dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figli di Giacobbe, a cui il Signore aveva parlato, dicendo: « Israele sarà il tuo nome »,
32 and built an altar in the name of Yahweh. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold twomeasures of seed.	32 con quelle pietre eresse un altare al nome del Signore, e vi fece una fossa come due piccoli solchi, intorno all'altare.
33 He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood.	33 Poi aggiustò le legna, tagliò il bue in pezzi, e lo pose sopra le legna,
34 Then he said, 'Fil four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' They did this.He said, 'Do it a second time;' they did it a second time. He said, 'Do it a third time;' they did it a third time.	34 e disse: « Empite quattro idrie d'acqua e gettatela sopra l'olocausto e sopra le legna ». Disse ancora: « Fatelo anche un'altra volta ». Avendolo essi fatto per due volte, disse: « Fate lo stesso anche per la terza volta ». Lo fecero per la terza volta,
35 The water flowed round the altar until even the trench itself was ful of water.	35 e l'acqua correva attorno all'altare e ne restò piena la fossa.
36 At the time when the offering is presented, Elijah the prophet stepped forward. 'Yahweh, God ofAbraham, Isaac and Israel,' he said, 'let them know today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant,that I have done all these things at your command.	36 Giunto il tempo di offrir l'olocausto, il profeta Elia si avvicinò e disse: « Signore Dio d'Abramo, d'Isacco e d'Israele, mostra oggi d'essere il Dio d'Israele e che io sono tuo servo, e che ho fatte tutte queste cose per tuo ordine.
37 Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God and arewinning back their hearts.'	37 Esaudiscimi, Signore, esaudiscimi, affinchè questo popolo riconosca che tu sei il Signore Dio, e che hai di nuovo convertiti i loro cuori».
38 Then Yahweh's fire fel and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and licked up the water in thetrench.	38 Allora il fuoco del Signore cadde, e divorò l'olocausto, le legna, le pietre, anche la polvere, e consumò l'acqua che era nella fossa.
39 When al the people saw this they fell on their faces. 'Yahweh is God,' they cried, 'Yahweh is God!'	39 A quella vista, tutto il popolo si prostrò bocconi e disse: « E' il Signore che è Dio! E' il Signore che è Dio! »
40 Elijah said, 'Seize the prophets of Baal: do not let one of them escape.' They seized them, and Elijahtook them down to the Kishon, and there he slaughtered them.	40 Elia disse loro: « Prendete i profeti di Baal: non ne scampi nemmeno uno ». Avendoli essi presi, Elia li fe' scendere al torrente Cison, ove li uccise.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go back now, eat and drink; for I hear the approaching sound of rain.'	41 Elia disse ad Acab: « Sali, mangia e bevi, perchè sento il rumore di grand'acqua ».
42 While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to theground, putting his face between his knees.	42 Essendo Acab salito a mangiare e bere, Elia salì sulla cima del Carmelo, e, chinatosi a terra, pose la sua faccia tra le sue ginocchia,
43 'Now go up', he told his servant, 'and look out to sea.' He went up and looked. 'There is nothing at al ,'he said. Seven times Elijah told him to go back.	43 e disse al suo servo: « Sali e guarda dalla parte del mare ». Quello andò e, dopo aver guardato, disse: « Non c'è nulla ». Elia gli disse: « Tornaci fino a sette volte ».
44 The seventh time, the servant said, 'Now there is a cloud, smal as a man's hand, rising from the sea.'Elijah said, 'Go and say to Ahab, "Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you." '	44 La settima volta (disse): « Ecco ima piccola nuvoletta, come il piede di un uomo, viene dal mare ». « Allora, disse Elia, va a dire ad Acab: Attacca i cavalli al tuo carro e scendi chè non ti sorprenda la pioggia».
45 And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fel in torrents. Ahab mounted hischariot and made for Jezreel.	45 Or mentre egli si volgeva da un lato e dall'altro, ecco i cieli oscurarsi di nubi e di vento e venir giù gran pioggia. Acab, montato sul carro, se ne andò a Iezrael;
46 But the hand of Yahweh had come on Elijah and, hitching up his clothes, he ran ahead of Ahab al theway to Jezreel.	46 e la mano del Signore fu sopra Elia, che, cintosi i fianchi, si mise a correre davanti ad Acab, fino a che arrivò a Iezrael.
