1 Kings 18

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 A long time went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, 'Go, present yourself toAhab, and I wil send rain on the country.'	1 Mucho tiempo después, al tercer año, la palabra del Señor llegó a Elías, en estos términos: «Ve a presentarte a Ajab, y yo enviaré lluvia a la superficie del suelo».
2 So Elijah set off to present himself to Ahab. As the famine was particularly severe in Samaria,	2 Entonces Elías partió para presentarse ante Ajab. Como apretaba el hambre en Samaría,
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, the master of the palace -- Obadiah held Yahweh in great reverence:	3 Ajab llamó a Abdías, el mayordomo de palacio. –Abdías era muy temeroso del Señor,
4 when Jezebel was butchering the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred of them and hid them,fifty at a time, in a cave, and kept them provided with food and water-	4 y cuando Jezabel perseguía a muerte a los profetas del Señor, él había recogido a cien de ellos, los había ocultado en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y los había provisto de pan y agua–.
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, 'Come along, we must scour the country, all the springs and all the ravinesin the hope of finding grass to keep horses and mules alive, or we shall have to slaughter some of our stock.'	5 Ajab dijo a Abdías: «Vamos a recorrer todos los manantiales y torrentes del país. Tal vez encontremos pasto para conservar con vida los caballos y las mulas, y así no tendremos que sacrificar ganado».
6 They divided the country for the purpose of their survey; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiahwent another way by himself.	6 Se repartieron el país para recorrerlo: Ajab partió solo por un camino y Abdías, también solo, se fue por otro.
7 While Obadiah was on his way, whom should he meet but Elijah. Recognising him he fel on his faceand said, 'So it is you, my lord Elijah!'	7 Mientras Abdías iba por el camino, le salió al encuentro Elías. Apenas lo reconoció, cayó con el rostro en tierra y dijo: «¿Eres tú, Elías, mi señor?».
8 'Yes,' he replied, 'go and tel your master, "Elijah is here." '	8 «Soy yo, le respondió él. Ve a decirle a tu señor que Elías está aquí».
9 But Obadiah said, 'What sin I have committed, for you to put your servant into Ahab's power and causemy death?	9 Pero él replicó: «¿Qué pecado he cometido para que pongas a tu servidor en manos de Ajab y él me haga morir?
10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent in search ofyou; and when they said, "He is not there," he made the kingdom or nation swear an oath that they did not knowwhere you were.	10 ¡Por la vida del Señor, tu Dios!, no hay nación ni reino adonde mi señor Ajab no te haga mandado buscar. Y cuando decían: No está aquí, él hacía jurar a ese reino y a esa nación que no te habían encontrado.
11 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here."	11 Y ahora tú dices: «Ve a decirle a tu señor que aquí está Elías».
12 But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh wil carry you away and I shal not know where; I shalgo and tel Ahab; he wil not be able to find you, and then he wil kil me. Yet from his youth your servant hasrevered Yahweh.	12 Pero en cuanto yo me aparte de ti, el espíritu del Señor te llevará quién sabe adónde, y cuando vaya a avisarle a Ajab, él no te encontrará y me matará. Sin embargo, tu servidor teme al Señor desde su juventud.
13 Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid ahundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water?	13 ¿Acaso no te han contado lo que hice cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas del Señor, cómo oculté a cien de ellos en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y los proveí de pan y agua?
14 And now you say to me, "Go and tel your master: Elijah is here." Why, he wil kill me!'	14 Y ahora tú me dices: «Ve a decirle a tu señor que aquí está Elías». ¡Seguro que me matará!».
15 Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shal present myself to him today!'	15 Pero Elías replicó: «¡Por la vida del Señor de los ejércitos, a quien yo sirvo! Hoy mismo me presentaré a él».
16 Obadiah went to find Ahab and tel him the news, and Ahab then went to find Elijah.	16 Abdías fue al encuentro de Ajab; le comunicó el mensaje, y Ajab fue a encontrarse con Elías.
17 When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, 'So there you are, you scourge of Israel!'	17 Apenas vio a Elías, Ajab le dijo: «¿Así que eres tú, el que trae la desgracia a Israel?».
18 'Not I,' he replied, 'I am not the scourge of Israel, you and your family are; because you have desertedYahweh and fol owed Baal.	18 Elías respondió: «No soy yo el que traigo la desgracia a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, porque han abandonado al Señor y te has ido detrás de los Baales.
19 Now give orders for all Israel to gather round me on Mount Carmel, and also the four hundredprophets of Baal who eat at Jezebel's table.'	19 Y ahora, manda que todo Israel se reúna junto a mí en el monte Carmelo, con los cuatrocientos profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Aserá que comen a la mesa de Jezabel».
20 Ahab cal ed al Israel together and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	20 Ajab mandó buscar a todos los israelitas y reunió a los profetas sobre el monte Carmelo.
21 Elijah stepped out in front of al the people. 'How long', he said, 'do you mean to hobble first on oneleg then on the other? If Yahweh is God, follow him; if Baal, fol ow him.' But the people had nothing to say.	21 Elías se acercó a todo el pueblo y dijo: «¿Hasta cuándo van a andar rengueando de las dos piernas? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo; si es Baal, síganlo a él. Pero el pueblo no le respondió ni una palabra.
22 Elijah then said to them, 'I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, while the prophets of Baal arefour hundred and fifty.	22 Luego Elías dijo al pueblo: «Como profeta del Señor, he quedado yo solo, mientras que los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta.
23 Let two bulls be given us; let them choose one for themselves, dismember it but not set fire to it. I inmy turn shal prepare the other bul , but not set fire to it.	23 Traigamos dos novillos; que ellos se elijan uno, que lo despedacen y lo pongan sobre la leña, pero sin prender fuego. Yo haré lo mismo con el otro novillo: lo pondré sobre la leña y tampoco prenderé fuego.
24 You must cal on the name of your god, and I shal cal on the name of Yahweh; the god who answerswith fire, is God indeed.' The people al answered, 'Agreed!'	24 Ustedes invocarán el nombre de su dios y yo invocaré el nombre del Señor: el dios que responda enviándome fuego, ese es Dios». Todo el pueblo respondió diciendo: «¡Está bien!».
25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one bul and begin, for there are more of you. Call onthe name of your god but light no fire.'	25 Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Elíjanse un novillo y prepárenlo ustedes primero, ya que son los más numerosos; luego invoquen el nombre de su dios, pero no prendan fuego».
26 They took the bul and prepared it, and from morning to midday they called on the name of Baal. 'OBaal, answer us!' they cried, but there was no voice, no answer, as they performed their hobbling dance roundthe altar which they had made.	26 Ellos tomaron el novillo que se les había dado, lo prepararon e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: «¡Respóndenos, Baal!». Pero no se oyó ninguna voz ni nadie que respondiera. Mientras tanto, danzaban junto al altar que habían hecho.
27 Midday came, and Elijah mocked them. 'Cal louder,' he said, 'for he is a god: he is preoccupied or heis busy, or he has gone on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and needs to be woken up!'	27 Al mediodía, Elías empezó a burlarse de ellos, diciendo: «¡Griten bien fuerte, porque es un dios! Pero estará ocupado, o ausente, o se habrá ido de viaje. A lo mejor está dormido y se despierta».
28 So they shouted louder and gashed themselves, as their custom was, with swords and spears untilthe blood flowed down them.	28 Ellos gritaron a voz en cuello y, según su costumbre, se hacían incisiones con cuchillos y punzones, hasta chorrear sangre.
29 Midday passed, and they ranted on until the time when the offering is presented; but there was novoice, no answer, no sign of attention.	29 Y una vez pasado el mediodía, se entregaron al delirio profético hasta la hora en que se ofrece la oblación. Pero no se oyó ninguna voz, ni hubo nadie que respondiera o prestara atención.
30 Then Elijah said to al the people, 'Come over to me,' and al the people came over to him. Herepaired Yahweh's altar which had been torn down.	30 Entonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: «¡Acérquense a mí!». Todo el pueblo se acercó a él, y él restauró el altar del Señor que había sido demolido:
31 Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom theword of Yahweh had come, 'Israel is to be your name,'	31 tomó doce piedras, conforme al número de los hijos de Jacob, a quien el Señor había dirigido su palabra, diciéndole: «Te llamarás Israel»,
32 and built an altar in the name of Yahweh. Round the altar he dug a trench of a size to hold twomeasures of seed.	32 y con esas piedras erigió un altar al nombre del Señor. Alrededor del altar hizo una zanja, como un surco para dos medidas de semilla.
33 He then arranged the wood, dismembered the bull, and laid it on the wood.	33 Luego dispuso la leña, despedazó el novillo y lo colocó sobre la leña.
34 Then he said, 'Fil four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' They did this.He said, 'Do it a second time;' they did it a second time. He said, 'Do it a third time;' they did it a third time.	34 Después dijo: «Llenen de agua cuatro cántaros y derrámenla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña». Así lo hicieron. El añadió: «Otra vez». Lo hicieron por segunda vez, y él insistió: «Una vez más». Lo hicieron por tercera vez.
35 The water flowed round the altar until even the trench itself was ful of water.	35 El agua corrió alrededor del altar, y hasta la zanja se llenó de agua.
36 At the time when the offering is presented, Elijah the prophet stepped forward. 'Yahweh, God ofAbraham, Isaac and Israel,' he said, 'let them know today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant,that I have done all these things at your command.	36 A la hora en que se ofrece la oblación, el profeta Elías se adelantó y dijo: «¡Señor, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel! Que hoy se sepa que tú eres Dios en Israel, que yo soy tu servidor y que por orden tuya hice todas estas cosas.
37 Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God and arewinning back their hearts.'	37 Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme, para que este pueblo reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que eres tú el que les ha cambiado el corazón».
38 Then Yahweh's fire fel and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and licked up the water in thetrench.	38 Entonces cayó el fuego del Señor: Abrazó el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y la tierra, y secó el agua de la zanja.
39 When al the people saw this they fell on their faces. 'Yahweh is God,' they cried, 'Yahweh is God!'	39 Al ver esto, todo el pueblo cayó con el rostro en tierra y dijo: «¡El Señor es Dios! ¡El Señor es Dios!».
40 Elijah said, 'Seize the prophets of Baal: do not let one of them escape.' They seized them, and Elijahtook them down to the Kishon, and there he slaughtered them.	40 Elías les dijo: «¡Agarren a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!». Ellos los agarraron: Elías los hizo bajar al torrente Quisón y allí los degolló.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go back now, eat and drink; for I hear the approaching sound of rain.'	41 Elías dijo a Ajab: «Sube a comer y a beber, porque ya se percibe el ruido de la lluvia».
42 While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to theground, putting his face between his knees.	42 Ajab subió a comer y a beber, mientras Elías subía a la cumbre del Carmelo. Allí se postró en tierra, con el rostro entre las rodillas.
43 'Now go up', he told his servant, 'and look out to sea.' He went up and looked. 'There is nothing at al ,'he said. Seven times Elijah told him to go back.	43 Y dijo a su servidor: «Sube y mira hacia el mar». El subió, miró y dijo: «No hay nada». Elías añadió: «Vuelve a hacerlo siete veces».
44 The seventh time, the servant said, 'Now there is a cloud, smal as a man's hand, rising from the sea.'Elijah said, 'Go and say to Ahab, "Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you." '	44 La séptima vez, el servidor dijo: «Se eleva del mar una nube, pequeña como la palma de una mano». Elías dijo: «Ve a decir a Ajab: Engancha el carro y baja, para que la lluvia no te lo impida».
45 And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fel in torrents. Ahab mounted hischariot and made for Jezreel.	45 El cielo se oscureció cada vez más por las nubes y el viento, y empezó a llover copiosamente. Ajab subió a su carro y partió para Izreel.
46 But the hand of Yahweh had come on Elijah and, hitching up his clothes, he ran ahead of Ahab al theway to Jezreel.	46 La mano del Señor se posó sobre Elías; él se ató el cinturón y corrió delante de Ajab hasta la entrada de Izreel.
